Blizzard’s documented weekly route awards up to three boxes for up to 27 games, with wins counting double; other routes depend on the current season or campaign.
How to earn loot boxes in Overwatch 2
Loot boxes returned in Season 15 in February 2025. The old launch-era explanation that they were going away described the 2022 transition, not the current system. Blizzard’s February 2025 patch notes document the standard weekly reward and the other mechanics below.

Play games for the weekly reward
Blizzard’s documented weekly track awards up to three loot boxes for playing up to 27 games. Wins count double toward progress, so winning advances the track faster than playing a loss or draw. This is a weekly ceiling, not a promise that a few matches will earn three boxes. Check the in-game progress tracker for your current total and any changes made in later seasons.
Progress through the Battle Pass
Battle Pass loot-box rewards vary by season and track. In Season 15, Blizzard listed one Legendary Loot Box on the free track and two additional Legendary Loot Boxes on the Premium track. Those are Season 15 rewards, not a guarantee of the allocation in later passes; check the current pass in-game for its rewards.

Complete limited-time event challenges
Events can offer boxes for match wins, challenge milestones, or community progress. The requirements and reward types change with each event, so use the active in-game event hub rather than relying on past event instructions.

- Excavation Initiative, June–August 2026: A weekly dig required a win on each of three separate days in a week and awarded a loot box; a second weekly dig could earn another. Additional milestones included Epic and Legendary boxes. The event ran June 16 through August 10. See the June 30, 2026 patch notes.
- Junkrat’s Loot Hunt, July–August 2026: This was a challenge-based hunt, and progress did not reset during the event. Its listed run was July 31 through August 3, so it is not an ongoing route. See the July 2026 patch notes.
Watch eligible streams or esports broadcasts
Some time-limited Twitch Drops and esports campaigns include loot boxes. Eligibility can depend on the campaign dates, viewing hours, platform, and claiming the reward within the specified window. Check the Overwatch Esports rewards page and the campaign announcement for the exact terms; an expired announcement does not earn a current reward. Blizzard’s August 11, 2026 Season 4 Twitch Drops announcement is one example of a dated campaign, not a standing offer.

What loot boxes contain and what the odds mean
Blizzard says an ordinary loot box contains four randomly selected items and prioritizes items you do not already own. If it cannot avoid duplicates, the box grants progress toward a bonus box. A Legendary Loot Box guarantees at least one Legendary item.

Blizzard’s February 2025 patch notes give these average per-box chances for ordinary loot boxes:

These are separate chances for items of each rarity, not slices of a single 100% chance. One box has four items, which can have different rarities. Blizzard also guarantees at least one Rare-or-better item in every box, an Epic item within five consecutive openings, and a Legendary item within 20 consecutive openings. For Legendary Loot Boxes, Blizzard lists average chances of 21.93% for an Epic item, 96.26% for a Rare item, and 97.97% for a Common item.

What happens to unopened boxes at season change?
Blizzard says unopened boxes from the previous season are automatically opened at the start of the next season, and their contents are added to your collection. You do not need to open them manually before the season ends.

Seasonal and campaign rewards expire, and the May, June, and July 2026 events described above have ended. The official information available for October 4, 2026 does not establish a specific active loot-box event. Check the live event hub in Overwatch 2 and the official esports rewards page for current opportunities and dates.
