Java and Bedrock can differ, and the December 2025 Mounts of Mayhem update makes that distinction concrete: Java players can breed a nautilus, while Bedrock players cannot. The lists below separate the older advancement rosters from mechanics confirmed in the latest release notes cited here.
What “tameable” and “breedable” mean in Minecraft
Taming and breeding are different mechanics. A passive animal is not automatically tameable; a rideable mob is not necessarily tamed; and a mob that can be tamed is not necessarily breedable. A mob may also qualify for both mechanics, or its behavior may differ between Java and Bedrock.
The Minecraft Wiki’s advancement reference lists mobs associated with “Tame an animal” and “Breed an animal.” Those are lists for advancement criteria, not a verified, exhaustive inventory of every current tameable or breedable mob in both editions. Use them as a starting roster rather than a timeless count.
Animals listed for the “Tame an animal” advancement
The older Minecraft Wiki advancement page names these eight mobs. Its count describes entries on that page; it does not include a confirmed update to the roster for the December 2025 Mounts of Mayhem releases.

- For an advancement reference, the older page names eight mobs for taming and 26 for breeding.
- For current gameplay, check the release notes for your edition and version, especially when dealing with newly added mobs or variants.
- Do not treat a mob’s appearance on a breeding list as proof it is tameable, or a taming listing as proof it can be bred.
