Does ancient debris spawn more in one Nether biome?
No reliable biome-by-biome comparison establishes a winner. The available generation guidance does not show that Nether Wastes, crimson forests, warped forests, soul sand valleys, or basalt deltas produce more ancient debris than one another. In particular, there is no supported basis for saying Nether Wastes has better odds.

Choose where to dig based on the route: how easily you can make a tunnel, how much lava you encounter, and whether the area is safe enough to work in. A biome may feel more or less comfortable because of its terrain or mobs, but that is a practical route consideration, not evidence of higher debris density.
What Y-level should you mine at?
For a straightforward target, start around Y=15–16. The Minecraft Wiki describes Y=16 as the average level where ancient debris is most common, while also noting that generation varies by edition. Its Java Edition Nether Update guide gives a broader common range of levels 8–22. Those figures describe tendencies, not a promise that a particular tunnel will find debris.

Mojang’s 2022 guide suggests bed-mining tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15. That is method-specific advice; it does not establish that one of those levels is universally best across editions and versions. No current Java-versus-Bedrock rate table is established here, so treat the target as a practical starting point rather than a precise guarantee.
Why tunnel mining works better than searching for exposed blocks
Ancient debris does not naturally generate exposed to air, so scanning open cavern walls is not the main approach. Digging tunnels reveals buried blocks that would otherwise remain hidden. The block is rare, so finding none in a particular stretch does not mean you chose the wrong biome or height.

Bring a diamond-or-better pickaxe if you want to collect ancient debris; the Minecraft Wiki’s Java Update guide and Mojang’s block article state that requirement. Once collected, debris can be processed into netherite scrap, but the relevant preparation for mining is having the right pickaxe and a route you can work safely.
Bed mining: useful, but manage the explosion risk
Mojang recommends using beds as an excavation method, and its guide suggests tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15. Beds explode when used in the Nether. As guide author Kate Gray puts it, “Trying to use a bed in the Nether will explode the bed, so why not use that to your advantage?” (Minecraft.net, December 29, 2022.)

The explosion is the method, but it can also hurt you. Mojang advises sheltering behind a block and entering with full health and supplies. Make sure you have food and suitable armor, and position cover between yourself and the blast before triggering a bed. If you would rather avoid that risk, ordinary tunnel mining is an alternative; neither method guarantees a specific yield.

Mojang identifies bastion-remnant chests as another source of ancient debris. This is an exploration alternative, not evidence that a particular biome has better ore generation. Bastions contain hostile mobs, so weigh the danger of exploring one against the effort and risk of mining a tunnel.
