For a flexible first character, choose the Thief for Agility, Luck, and Speed, or the Lady for Willpower and Endurance. Choose Mage for a simple Magicka boost, Atronach for a much larger pool if you can manage its lack of natural regeneration, or Shadow for a once-daily invisibility power. No sign is universally best: match its benefits and costs to how you want to play. Before leaving the sewers, save your game; that is the last ordinary opportunity to change your birthsign.
How to choose a birthsign
Birthsigns trade different kinds of value. Some raise attributes continuously; others expand Magicka, add defensive benefits, or grant a power with limited uses. The original Oblivion manual describes the general distinction between always-active abilities and powers, many of which can be used once per day. The specific effects below are those reported for Oblivion Remastered in GameSpot’s guides, not a claim that every detail matches the original game.
- For a broad, low-management choice: consider the Thief or Lady, depending on which attributes suit your character.
- For spell capacity without Atronach’s regeneration drawback: consider the Mage.
- For a large Magicka pool and spell absorption: consider the Atronach only if you are comfortable managing recovery.
- For a situational stealth or escape option: consider the Shadow.
- For a melee start or passive defense: consider the Warrior or Lord.
These are practical recommendations, not official balance rankings. The guides do not establish that any birthsign is required for a build or makes one unplayable.

| Birthsign | Listed effect | What it may suit |

| Mage | Magicka +50 | A simple increase to spell capacity without the Atronach’s stated no-regeneration drawback. |
| Thief | Agility +10, Luck +10, and Speed +10 | A versatile set of attribute bonuses for players who want broad benefits. |
| Steed | Movement speed +20 | A movement-focused bonus. |
| Apprentice | Magicka +100; 100% weakness to magic | More Magicka at the cost of a substantial defensive vulnerability. |

| Ritual | Blessed Word makes undead flee for 30 seconds and can be repeated for 40 Magicka; Mara’s Gift restores 200 health once per day | A healing power plus a situational undead-control effect. |
| Atronach | Magicka +150; 50% spell absorption; no Magicka regeneration | A large magical pool and defensive benefit paired with ongoing resource-management demands. |
| Tower | Opens an average lock once per day; reflects 5% of incoming damage for 120 seconds once per day | Limited-use utility; the lock-opening effect may be less useful as stronger locks appear. |
| Lord | Armor Rating +15 and magic resistance +15% | Passive defensive bonuses. |
| Lady | Willpower +10 and Endurance +10 | A broad attribute option, particularly if those attributes fit your build. |
| Lover | Lover’s Kiss paralyzes for 10 seconds and reduces the caster’s fatigue by 120; once per day | A single-use control effect with a substantial fatigue cost. |
| Serpent | Once per day: poison damage for 20 seconds, cures poison, dispels 90 points, and damages the caster’s fatigue by 100 | A mixed one-use effect with a significant fatigue drawback. |
Which birthsign fits your play style?
If you are unsure
The Thief is a reasonable general-purpose pick if you value its combination of Agility, Luck, and Speed. The Lady is another broad option, with Willpower and Endurance instead. Neither is a universal best; choose the attribute mix that sounds more useful for the character you intend to play.
If you are starting as a spellcaster
Mage adds 50 Magicka, making it the straightforward capacity choice in the listed effects. Apprentice adds 100 Magicka, but its 100% weakness to magic is a major defensive cost. Atronach offers the largest listed increase, plus spell absorption, but stops natural Magicka regeneration. That makes it a more demanding choice: plan around potions, absorbed spells, or other recovery sources rather than expecting ordinary regeneration.

If you favor melee or defense
Warrior’s Strength and Endurance bonuses are a direct fit for a combat-focused start. Lord instead provides listed armor and magic-resistance bonuses, making it a passive-defense option. The Lady is worth considering if its Willpower and Endurance bonuses fit your priorities.
If you favor stealth and exploration
Shadow’s Moonshadow makes you invisible for 60 seconds once per day. Treat it as a tool for a particular opportunity—such as avoiding an encounter or getting past an obstacle—not as a permanent stealth effect.

When can you change your birthsign?
Bethesda Support says the only time you can change your birthsign is before you exit the sewers. If you want a safety net, make a save immediately before leaving; Bethesda says you can return to it if you decide to change your choice. In practice, use that moment to settle on the sign you want before continuing.
There is no single required way to play
Bethesda’s beginner guide emphasizes that players can take different paths and choose different birthsigns. Design Director Al Nanes advises players to explore and follow what interests them; Senior Environment Artist Megan Sawyer similarly notes that different players have different experiences. That is fitting advice for this choice: weigh the actual effect and its tradeoff against your preferred play style, rather than looking for a sign that every character must take.
