Activision requires an account for online play in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and Call of Duty: Warzone, and for crossplay in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Playing Call of Duty through Xbox Cloud Gaming has additional account-linking and subscription requirements. That guidance does not establish that every Call of Duty game—or every offline mode—requires an Activision account.
Which Call of Duty games have a stated Activision-account requirement?

Does every Call of Duty game require an account?
No franchise-wide rule is established by the official guidance cited here. The requirements above are specific to named games, modes, or services. They do not prove that every Call of Duty release needs an Activision account, nor do they establish a universal rule for campaign or other offline play. For an older title, a particular platform, or a different mode, check current Activision support guidance for that exact game and setup.
Why does Activision require an account?
For the listed online and crossplay cases, Activision ties the account to cross-platform play and, where supported, cross-progression. Progress in supported games is associated with the Activision account, so linking the platform account to the account you actually use matters. Activision says progress and content are not lost if a platform account is relinked to its original Activision account; using a different Activision account can interrupt access to that progress until the original link is restored. Set up and protect the right account
- Create or sign in to an Activision account. Activision describes account creation as free. Use an email address you expect to retain access to; losing access to it can make sign-in and account changes difficult. Activision account management
- Link the platform account you play on. For cloud play through Xbox Cloud Gaming, link an Xbox account as well. Follow the requirements for the specific game and service. Xbox Cloud Gaming guidance
- Verify your email when prompted. Activision requires email verification to link accounts or change personal information and credentials. It may also ask for verification when you sign in online or in a game. Activision verification guidance
- Check before unlinking. Activision says an individual platform account may be unlinked once every 12 months. Avoid switching links casually, particularly if your game progress is tied to the account you are removing. Activision account management
What to check if the game asks you to sign in
- Confirm whether you are trying to play online, use crossplay, or launch through a cloud-gaming service; the documented requirement can depend on the mode or service.
- Make sure the platform account is linked to the Activision account that holds your progress.
- If a verification prompt appears, check the email associated with the account.
- If you cannot access the account or your progress appears missing after a link change, consult Activision account support before unlinking or creating another account.
