Pick the class whose combat rhythm sounds most enjoyable: Paladin for defense and healing, Ranger for bow-based ranged attacks, Warrior for durable melee, or Wizard for flexible magic. None of the official descriptions establishes a universally strongest class, so treat these as playstyle matches rather than a tier list.
Which starting class fits your playstyle?
New players choose from four starting classes. The matches below are based on the game’s class descriptions, not comparative performance testing.
| Class | Combat style | Choose it if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Paladin | Defense-oriented melee, with healing and high burst damage | To stay durable, recover health, and hit hard at close range |
| Ranger | Ranged specialist with quick, powerful bow attacks | To attack from a distance |
| Warrior | Durable melee fighter who chains kills and bolsters defense with shouts | To remain in the thick of combat |
| Wizard | Magic-user with balanced offensive and defensive skills | To mix arcane offense with protection |
These descriptions come from the class summaries and details on the Heroes of Hammerwatch II Wiki. They suggest a practical first choice, but do not establish which class deals the most damage or performs best overall.
What about the other classes?
Rogue, Warlock, and Sorcerer unlock through gameplay rather than being among the four starting choices. Priest is associated with the Celestial Ruins expansion; access to that class depends on having the expansion.

How much does your first choice lock you in?
Each class has three specializations that add abilities and passives, giving you ways to refine its style beyond the initial class choice. The game’s Steam page describes class specializations, gear, trinkets, and town upgrades as parts of progression.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The class wiki also describes class leveling buffs that benefit other characters. That gives you a reason to try additional classes over time: progression with one character can contribute to your wider roster, rather than making your first selection the only one that matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does solo or co-op change the recommendation?
The game supports solo play and online co-op, but the cited official materials do not provide mode-specific class rankings, benchmark comparisons, or win-rate data. Choose based on whether you prefer close combat, ranged attacks, or magic—and whether durability and healing matter more to you than an offensive focus. There is no source-supported basis here for naming a single best class for solo or cooperative play.
