Which Deltarune chapter should you play first?
Begin with Chapter 1. Then continue with Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5. Steam describes DELTARUNE as a “linear, chapter-based system.” Although its page also says you can pick up the game from anywhere, that is not a reason for a first-time player to skip ahead: the straightforward recommendation is to follow the numbered sequence.

Do you have to play the Deltarune chapters in order?
You do not have to play at a particular pace, but the chapters are presented as a linear series. Playing in order is the clearest way to follow the game’s progression and story. Toby Fox has also said he personally recommends taking a break between chapters; that is optional advice, not a requirement.

How many Deltarune chapters are available?
As of October 8, 2026, Steam lists Chapters 1–5 as available, with more chapters planned as free updates and Chapter 6 aimed for 2027. Availability and release targets can change, so check the current Steam listing for the latest status. Chapters 1 and 2 are available to try for free on Steam; the listing shows $24.99 for the game, but storefront prices and regional terms may differ.

Is there a best Deltarune chapter?
There is no supported objective ranking of the chapters in the official information cited here. “Best” depends on what you value: a strong entry point, a memorable central mechanic, story payoff, pacing, or challenge and accessibility. Those are useful ways to compare chapters, but any ranking based on them is a matter of editorial judgment—not an official verdict or a measured consensus.
What should you know before choosing a platform?
Platform details can vary. In Toby Fox’s 2025 release description, the Switch 2 version included a small special room using mouse controls on two controllers; he said the non-Switch-2 versions had the same content as one another. Nintendo said Switch purchasers could download the Switch 2 version at no additional cost. These statements describe the 2025 release context; check the relevant live platform store for current compatibility, edition, save-transfer and regional details. The 2025 launch announcement covered Chapters 1–4, so it does not describe the current chapter count.

Fox advised readers concerned about spoilers to avoid social media and video sites until they are sufficiently far through the game. If you want to experience the story unspoiled, play the chapters before watching or browsing content about later events.
