Match the element to the health bar you are depleting. Use Incendiary against flesh, Shock against shields, and Corrosive against armor. These are the specialist pairings named in the official Borderlands Quick Tips material, and the Epic Games Store beginner guide to Borderlands 4 gives the same general picture. The specialist choice matters most on harder difficulties, where the gap between a matched and a mismatched element becomes large.
Element ratings by enemy health bar
The two guides use qualitative ratings (weak, decent, strong, very strong, very weak) rather than damage percentages. The table below combines them. Where a cell says “not stated,” the sources available do not give a rating for that combination, and it should not be read as neutral.

Two things follow from the table. Shock and Corrosive are the strongest specialists for their bars, and each is close to useless on the opposite bar. Cryo and Radiation do not win any single bar outright, but neither has a rating below “decent” on flesh and armor, or below “strong” on shields, except Cryo’s and Radiation’s own weaker cells, so they are the safer carry when you cannot switch.
How to choose during a fight
- Read the health bar that is currently taking damage. Shield, armor, and flesh bars are separate, so the target bar changes as an enemy loses each layer.
- If the bar is flesh, use Incendiary. If it is shields, use Shock. If it is armor, use Corrosive.
- If switching elements is slow or awkward mid-fight, keep Cryo or Radiation in the loadout. Both are rated at least decent against flesh and armor, and strong against shields.
- Avoid staying on an element rated weak or very weak against the bar in front of you. Shock on armor or flesh and Corrosive on shields are the mismatches the guides warn about most clearly.
Why difficulty changes the answer
Official Quick Tips material says elemental choice is relatively unimportant on Easy but becomes very important on Hard, which it describes as the standard difficulty for endgame Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. It states that enemies on that tier have stronger elemental resistance and are more vulnerable to their weaknesses. No numeric multiplier is given, so the effect should be treated as a qualitative increase in the penalty for mismatched elements rather than a measured figure.

What the sources establish and what they do not
- The Epic Games Store beginner guide, titled “Borderlands 4 guide: 12 tips to help you survive on the planet of Kairos,” provides the element ratings in the table above. The copy available to us is a Dutch-language page with English search-result text, and no publication date was established.
- The difficulty guidance comes from the official Borderlands Quick Tips material, reached through a SteamDB mirror rather than the primary host. Its exact publication or version date was not established.
- Both sources state general matchups. Neither promises that every individual enemy follows the pattern without exception, so use the ratings as a starting point and adjust when an enemy shrugs off the element you chose.
- The ratings are not damage percentages, so they show direction and rough magnitude only. They do not tell you how much faster one element kills a given enemy.
Once you know which bar you are working through, the choice is usually obvious: the specialist for that bar, with Cryo or Radiation as a fallback when you cannot switch.
