Which Final Fantasy Games Are Connected to Each Other?

Most numbered Final Fantasy entries are separate stories, but some branches are connected. Here’s how to tell a prequel, remake project, shared mythos, and crossover apart.

Most numbered Final Fantasy games tell separate stories in separate settings. The main connections are contained within particular branches: some games continue or precede another story, some share a mythos, and some are grouped into a remake project or crossover. You generally do not need to play the numbered series in order.

Are the numbered Final Fantasy games one continuous story?

No. Final Fantasy is best understood as an anthology-style series: a shared franchise name does not mean that every numbered entry follows the same characters or timeline. Treat each numbered game as its own story unless Square Enix identifies a specific connection.

Connections can still exist within a branch of the franchise. The useful question is what kind of link a game has—not simply whether it uses the Final Fantasy name, familiar creatures, or recurring themes.

What does “connected” mean?

Connection type What it means Supported example What the connection tells you about play order
Sequel or prequel A story continues, or takes place before, a named game’s events. Square Enix describes Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion as a prequel focused on Zack Fair. These games have a specific story relationship, but “prequel” alone does not establish the best order in which to play them.
Shared mythos Separate stories draw on a common cosmology or conceptual framework without necessarily sharing a plot. Fabula Nova Crystallis: Square Enix described its titles as having different characters, worlds, and stories while sharing a mythos. A shared framework does not, by itself, make one game’s plot a continuation of another’s.
Remake project Related versions of an existing game’s story are presented as part of a distinct project. Square Enix groups Remake, Rebirth, and Revelation under “The Remake Project” on its Final Fantasy VII portal. The project links these titles, but the first Remake is described as a standalone game rather than a complete, scene-for-scene replacement for the original.
Shared world Different stories take place in the same named setting. Not stated in the Square Enix pages consulted here for a particular pair of games. A shared setting would be a meaningful link, but it would not necessarily mean the games are direct plot sequels.
Crossover A game brings characters from multiple entries together. Square Enix’s series history lists Dissidia, but the page does not explain its canon relationship to the original games. A crossover appearance is not proof that the characters’ home-game stories share one timeline.

Which Final Fantasy VII games are connected?

Final Fantasy VII has a clearly identified cluster of related games. Square Enix’s current Final Fantasy VII portal places Remake, Rebirth, and Revelation under “The Remake Project.” It also labels Remake Intergrade as part of that project. Because the portal’s catalog can change, its current grouping is the most precise way to describe which titles it includes.

The first FINAL FANTASY to join the HD‑2D lineup, FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE delivers a visually striking experience that feels both nostalgic and new, enhanced by dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models that make every moment more dramatic and immersive.
  • A return to the familiar - A classic RPG adventure unfolds in a world filled with beloved FINAL FANTASY elements—airships, crystals, espers and moogles woven into the fabric of the story, and so much more.
  • Strategic turn-based battles - Exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them—breaking their defenses to seize extra turns and gain the upper hand with powerful Resonance attacks in cinematic battles shaped by smart choices.
  • FINAL FANTASY legends - Bolster your team with Visions, echoes of beloved FINAL FANTASY characters, who fight alongside you with unique skills and abilities for deep party customization.
  • Hours of side content to discover - The world is full of secrets, including the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum with deadly monsters and rewards to match, the Chamber of Arms with formidable foes sealed within legendary weapons, and a showdown with Ultima Weapon.

The portal separates Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis under “More from the Universe.” It identifies Crisis Core Reunion as a prequel focused on Zack Fair. That makes it a distinct kind of connection from membership in the Remake Project.

What the first Remake does—and does not claim

Square Enix calls Final Fantasy VII Remake a “standalone game” within the project. Its story runs through the party’s escape from Midgar, and the game explores events in Midgar more deeply than the original. So it is not accurately described as a simple scene-for-scene replacement of the original game.

For players, the practical distinction is that the portal groups multiple titles as Final Fantasy VII-related material, while the first Remake has a defined story scope of its own. The official description does not make every item in the broader universe a direct sequel to every other item.

What is Fabula Nova Crystallis?

Fabula Nova Crystallis is an example of a shared mythos, not evidence that every title in the group continues Final Fantasy XIII‘s plot. In a May 8, 2006 announcement, Square Enix described the group as titles based on variations of the Final Fantasy XIII universe. It said the works would have different characters, worlds, and stories while sharing and expanding a common mythos, summarized by the line “One myth, countless stories.”

The announcement initially named Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. Those are the titles named in that historical announcement; it should not be read as a current slate or as proof that their plots directly follow one another.

Do crossover appearances prove two games share a timeline?

No. A crossover can unite characters from different games without establishing that the original stories take place in one shared continuity. Square Enix’s series history lists Dissidia, but the official page consulted here does not explain the crossover’s canon relationship to the source games. The existence of a crossover is therefore not enough to treat all its characters’ home-game stories as one timeline.

Do you need to play Final Fantasy games in order?

Not across the franchise as a whole: the numbered entries are usually separate stories, so a shared series label does not create a required play order. Within a connected branch, check the specific relationship. A named prequel, sequel, remake project, or shared mythos each signals something different; it does not automatically prescribe chronology as the best order to play.

Which connections are not established here?

Square Enix’s official pages consulted for this guide list Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, but those pages do not establish a shared-world or Ivalice relationship between them. Likewise, the exact canon status of Dissidia, the full boundaries of the Final Fantasy VII compilation, and the relationships among every sequel or prequel pair are not explained by the cited pages. Where an official source does not specify a connection, it is better not to turn a familiar fan interpretation into a categorical claim.
