A Steam Coming Soon page means a game is listed for a future release, not that it is available to buy or play. Any date shown is the developer’s current plan, which can change. To get a launch alert, add the game to your wishlist; Steam may send an email and/or mobile push notification when it releases, though delivery is not necessarily immediate.
What “Coming Soon” means on Steam
A Coming Soon store page and community hub let players see an upcoming game, follow its progress, and add it to their wishlist. The game is not yet purchasable or playable through that listing. Steam requires a new product’s Coming Soon page to be live for at least two weeks before release, according to Steamworks’ Coming Soon documentation.

Coming Soon describes the store-page state; it does not, by itself, tell you when the game will arrive. The page may show a more or less specific date, depending on how the developer chooses to communicate its plan.
How to interpret an approximate Steam release date
A less-specific or approximate date is best understood as a broader target, not a fixed promise or a guaranteed time window. Valve says developers control how specifically the date appears and asks them to keep store information honest and accurate. Its Coming Soon guidance points to separate release-date documentation for the available display choices; the guidance does not establish a universal duration for labels such as “Coming Soon.”

Steam’s Release Dates guidance is the relevant reference for date-display details. Whatever the listing shows, a date communicates the developer’s plan at that time; delays and changes can happen.
Can a developer change a Steam release date?
Yes. Valve says plans can change and developers control their release timing, while emphasizing that the store should show honest, accurate information. Steam asks developers to set a release date as close as possible to the actual release. If the date is fewer than 14 days away, the developer cannot change it without contacting Steam. For a player, a changed date means the public listing has been updated to reflect the current plan; it does not imply that the game has launched. Check the store page again for the latest date rather than treating an earlier date as a guarantee.
How to get a notification when a Steam game launches
- Open the game’s Steam store page.
- Select Add to your wishlist.
- Keep the game on your wishlist through its release. Steam says wishlisters at that moment may receive an email and/or mobile push notification when the game releases in Early Access or as a full release. The trigger and channels are described in Steamworks’ Wishlists documentation.
An Early Access release counts as a release for this notification. If the game later moves from Early Access to full release, Steam says that transition can generate another email for users who have it wishlisted then.

Why an alert might not arrive immediately
- Email timing: Steam says launch emails can take multiple hours to arrive, so the message may not appear at the moment the game becomes available.
- Email eligibility: A verified email address is needed for email delivery, and account communication preferences may exclude some message types.
- Cooldowns: Steam documents a two-week email cooldown per app ID. It can extend the cooldown during periods of high traffic. These delivery qualifications are covered in Steamworks’ Wishlists documentation.
- Push versus email: Steam describes email and/or mobile push as possible channels; a wishlist alert should not be treated as a guarantee that every player will receive or notice a message through a particular channel.
Wishlist alerts are different from other Steam notifications
Wishlist launch alerts are tied to a game becoming available in Early Access or full release. Steam also documents other, separate wishlist-related alerts:
- Discounts: Steam may notify wishlisters when the lowest-priced package is discounted by at least 20% and the discount lasts more than eight hours.
- Free demos: Developers may send a one-time notification when an associated free demo becomes public, within two weeks after the demo’s release, using the control on the demo’s app landing page.

Does wishlisting guarantee the game will appear on Steam?
No. Wishlist data can inform visibility, and Steam’s upcoming lists may be filtered by release date, popularity, tags, or other categories. Store placement is personalized, and Steam does not set a minimum wishlist count that a game must reach before it can begin appearing. A wishlist is useful for tracking a game and potentially receiving a launch alert, but it does not guarantee a particular discovery placement or predict sales.
