In an interview published August 1, 2012, Salvatore said: “I just think it’s going to raise the bar on the RPG genre in computer gaming.” The interview presents the game as still forthcoming, making the quote a forecast rather than a claim about how it ultimately performed (Lightspeed Magazine interview).

In the interview, Salvatore described joining 38 Studios early and creating the world of Amalur with input from his gaming group, his wife, and a friend. He said the project began as a setting for an intended massively multiplayer online game, then shifted toward a single-player RPG after 38 Studios acquired Big Huge Games and used its RPG engine.
