No publicly announced Xbox game was identified as cancelled in the July 6 restructuring announcement. Former employees later said an unnamed World’s Edge project was cancelled during the September reorganization, but it has not been identified publicly. The material available as of October 7, 2026, does not verify new layoffs or a game-cancellation announcement that day.
What the layoff announcements say about cancelled games
On July 6, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said: “None of our first party publicly announced games or projects are being cancelled as part of these reductions.” That statement applies to publicly announced first-party projects and the reductions announced on July 6. It does not establish what happened to every unannounced project or rule out later decisions.

Xbox’s September 22 restructuring announcement described job cuts, team changes and studio transitions, but did not provide a list of cancelled games. It did not name a cancelled title.

On September 27, PC Gamer reported that former World’s Edge employees said the studio’s next project had been cancelled as part of the September restructuring. The report did not identify the project. It should therefore be described as an unnamed project reported cancelled by former employees—not as an officially announced cancellation or a confirmed Age of Empires game.

| Date and source | Reported roles | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 — Xbox CEO Asha Sharma | Approximately 3,200 | Xbox role eliminations planned throughout FY27, including approximately 1,600 immediately. |
| July 6, 2026 — Microsoft EVP and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman | Around 4,800 | Microsoft-wide; about 2.1% of the global workforce. Coleman said most changes fell within Commercial and Xbox. |
| September 22, 2026 — Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty | 268 | Additional role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. |
The September update also said Activision’s remit would expand to include World’s Edge and Rare. The later report about an unnamed World’s Edge project is employee-sourced, not a title-by-title cancellation announcement from Xbox.
