Which graphics settings to change first when a game runs poorly after an engine update

First, find out whether you are seeing temporary shader compilation or a sustained frame-rate drop. If the game is only hitching during the first encounters after an engine or driver change, let that work finish before sacrificing image quality. If performance remains consistently low in a repeatable scene, lower render resolution or resolution scale first, then test expensive features such as ray tracing, advanced lighting, shadows and reflections—one setting at a time.

There is no universal “worst” setting across engines and games. The useful order is a controlled diagnostic: settle the game, establish a repeatable baseline, change one option, and measure the same scene again.

Identify the problem before changing quality

An engine update can produce two very different symptoms. A short freeze when a new effect, area or material appears is a hitch. A game that continually renders below your previous frame rate, even after you revisit the same route, has a sustained performance problem. Treating both symptoms as if they were the same will lead you to lower image quality without fixing the cause.

Temporary hitches after the update

  • The game pauses or stutters when you first enter an area, see an effect, or trigger a new material.
  • The same route becomes smoother when you repeat it later in the session.
  • Loading is unusually long only on the first launch after an engine or graphics-driver change.

These signs fit shader or pipeline-state work. Epic Games explains that changing graphics settings can select different rendering features and therefore different shaders or pipeline states. A state that has not been used before may compile at the moment it is needed. The graphics driver also stores compiled pipeline states on disk; Epic’s Unreal Engine engineers write, “The cache is cleared when a new driver is installed, so it’s normal to see longer loading screens the first time a game runs after a driver update.” Read the explanation in Epic’s Unreal Engine article on shader stuttering.

Sustained low frame rate

If the frame rate stays low after the game has had time to compile and stream its content, a rendering-workload test is appropriate. The game may now be doing more work per frame because the update changed lighting, shadows, reflections, geometry, post-processing or another feature. That does not prove the update is defective, and it does not prove your hardware needs replacing; it tells you to isolate the workload that changed.

Allow first-use compilation to finish

Do not use the first post-update run as your only benchmark. A newly installed driver can empty its shader cache, and an engine may compile states as you encounter them. Epic gives a title-specific example: Fortnite Battle Royale compiles about 30,000 pipeline state objects for a match and uses about 10,000 of them. The same article reports that Fortnite can take around 20–30 seconds longer to load into a Battle Royale match when the driver cache is empty. Those figures describe that game, not a general loading-time expectation.

AMD gives a separate, vendor-specific instruction for affected games that use its background shader-compilation feature: “AMD recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay for background shader compilation to complete prior to capturing performance measurements.” AMD also says to exclude the first benchmark run of each new session. See the scope and affected-title information in the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 background shader compilation support article.

Use the 15-minute period as AMD’s guidance for those affected titles, not as a universal timer. For another engine, wait until the obvious first-use pauses have stopped, then repeat the same route. If every repeat remains slow, proceed to a graphics-setting test.

Make a controlled baseline

A meaningful comparison requires the same conditions before and after each change. Write down your display resolution, refresh-rate or frame-rate cap, upscaling mode, graphics preset and any ray-tracing toggle. Then use the following procedure:

  1. Start from a settled session rather than the first launch after the update.
  2. Choose a repeatable route: the same level section, camera direction, combat encounter or benchmark sequence.
  3. Keep the display resolution, window mode, frame-rate cap and measurement overlay unchanged.
  4. Run the route long enough to include the slow section, not just an easy hallway or menu.
  5. Record the frame rate or frame-time behavior using the same tool each time. A hitch and a low average frame rate are different results.
  6. Change exactly one graphics option, repeat the route, and record what changed.

If the scene, route or measurement method changes between tests, you cannot tell whether the setting made the difference. Capture a separate result for the initial post-update run and for settled performance.

Which settings to test first for sustained slow rendering

Use this sequence as a diagnostic starting point, not a guaranteed ranking. A title can make shadows more expensive than reflections, or ray tracing may be unavailable entirely. Keep the setting that gives you the best frame-time improvement for the least visible damage.

Setting to test What changes on screen What the test tells you Pipeline-state consideration
Render resolution or resolution scale Lower internal pixel count; the image can look softer or less detailed. Whether the GPU is overwhelmed by the number of pixels being shaded. Changing scale can select a different rendering path in some games, so retest after the game settles.
Ray tracing Reflections, shadows or global illumination lose ray-traced detail when disabled or reduced. Whether ray-traced effects are responsible for a large share of frame work in this title. Turning the feature on or off can request different shaders or pipeline states.
High-end lighting Lighting quality, bounce detail or illumination complexity is reduced. Whether advanced lighting calculations are the bottleneck. A lighting feature toggle may trigger first-use compilation in engines that compile states on demand.
Shadows Shadow resolution, distance or softness is reduced. Whether shadow-map generation and filtering are consuming the budget. Different shadow options can require different rendering states and should be judged after any one-time hitch.
Reflections Reflection quality, resolution or update frequency is reduced. Whether screen-space, planar or ray-traced reflections are expensive in the tested scene. Reflection modes can change which shaders are needed, so compare settled runs.

The table describes the question each test answers, not a promise about its frame-rate gain. No broad, independently comparable statistic establishes an average post-update loss or a universal ranking of options across games.

1. Lower render resolution or resolution scale

Start here when the game is rendering too many pixels for the available GPU time. Reduce the internal scale by one available step, or choose the next lower output resolution if the game has no scale control. Keep the monitor’s refresh rate and the rest of the preset unchanged. Run the same route again.

A clear improvement points to pixel-shading or other resolution-dependent work. The trade-off is immediate image softness, especially on fine geometry and distant text. If the gain is small, restore the original scale and test a feature toggle instead; continuing to reduce resolution may make the picture worse without addressing the dominant cost.

2. Disable or reduce ray tracing

If the game exposes ray-traced reflections, shadows or global illumination, switch the feature off or move it to the next lower mode. Use the same camera path so that reflective surfaces and shadow-heavy areas are represented in both runs. This is a high-value diagnostic because it removes a distinct rendering path rather than merely lowering a general preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer that every hitch came from ray tracing. A first encounter with a ray-traced state can still hitch while shaders compile; judge the option by settled frame times after the initial work has completed.

3. Reduce advanced lighting

Some games separate a general lighting-quality control from ray tracing. Lower that advanced lighting option one step and repeat the route. Watch scenes with many dynamic lights, large illuminated interiors or volumetric effects, because those are where the setting’s workload is most likely to be visible.

4. Reduce shadows

Lower shadow quality, distance or softness only after the earlier tests, unless your game clearly shows a shadow-heavy bottleneck. This can improve performance while preserving much of the scene’s geometry and texture detail, but contact shadows and long-distance silhouettes may become less convincing. Change one shadow control at a time if the game exposes separate distance and resolution options.

5. Reduce reflections

Test reflections in a scene containing water, glass, polished floors or wet surfaces. Lowering the reflection mode or quality can help when those surfaces dominate the frame. In a scene with few reflective materials, a result there may not predict performance elsewhere, so repeat the test in the route that originally exposed the slowdown.

Use the result to choose a final setting

After each experiment, classify the outcome:

  • Large improvement, acceptable picture: keep that single change and restore any other setting you altered.
  • Small improvement, visible quality loss: undo it and test the next feature; the cost-to-quality trade-off is poor.
  • No improvement: restore the option. The bottleneck may be CPU, memory, streaming or a stall unrelated to graphics quality.
  • Improvement only during the first run: treat it as transient compilation behavior, not proof that the lower setting is needed permanently.

Once you identify a costly feature, you can raise other settings again. For example, keep the original resolution while reducing reflections if reflections were the only option that materially changed frame time. This preserves clarity better than dropping every control to Low.

When lowering graphics settings will not fix the hitch

Engine documentation identifies several stalls that are not solved by reducing image quality. Epic’s Unreal Engine guidance discusses memory and CPU considerations, including work that can limit performance even when the GPU is not the problem; consult the Unreal Engine memory and CPU performance documentation when the GPU-focused tests produce no change.

Epic’s shader-stuttering explanation also distinguishes shader compilation from synchronous loading, excessive spawning or streaming, and scene captures triggered by movement. A hitch caused by one of those systems can occur at the same location every time and may not respond to a lower resolution. In that case, keep the original graphics quality while checking whether the pause diminishes after repeated passes or after the game completes its background work.

Unity documents similar stall-focused troubleshooting in “Fixing hitches or stalls” for Unity 6.7 Beta. The exact remedy depends on the game and engine; do not transfer an Unreal-specific fix or AMD-specific compilation timing to every title.

Common mistakes after an engine update

  • Benchmarking immediately: the first run may include cache rebuilding or background shader compilation.
  • Changing a whole preset: you lose the ability to identify which feature caused the change.
  • Comparing different scenes: a quiet corridor cannot diagnose a slowdown that occurs in a crowded, reflective arena.
  • Confusing hitching with low average frame rate: a one-time compile pause needs different investigation from consistently long frame times.
  • Assuming a setting order is universal: engines and titles distribute work differently, so verify each change in your own game.
  • Keeping every reduction: once the expensive option is known, restore unaffected settings to retain image quality.

A practical decision path

  1. If the slowdown appears only on first encounters after the update, play until those encounters settle and repeat the route.
  2. If the settled route is still consistently slow, lower resolution scale once and measure.
  3. If that does not provide an acceptable result, test ray tracing, advanced lighting, shadows and reflections individually.
  4. Keep the change with the best balance of frame-time improvement and image quality.
  5. If none of the graphics tests changes the hitch, investigate shader, streaming, loading, CPU or memory behavior instead of lowering every visual option.

This process answers the useful question— which workload changed in this game—without treating a temporary first-run hitch as permanent damage or throwing away image quality unnecessarily.
