Start with the game’s own FSR option and the Balanced preset, then adjust image quality and costly graphics settings against your handheld’s sustained performance. First confirm that your device and game support the feature: AMD now calls FSR 4 FSR Upscaling, and it is not available on every handheld GPU or in every game.
Check whether your handheld and game support FSR Upscaling
AMD renamed FSR 4 to FSR Upscaling to distinguish the upscaler from the broader FSR “Redstone” suite. Availability depends on the graphics hardware, the game, and how the game implements FSR. AMD’s current support page describes two routes: a game can include native ML-based support in its graphics menu, or some supported games that already integrate FSR 3.1 or later can use an upgrade path through AMD Software. Follow the game and AMD’s prompts for the exact version and settings.

AMD’s GPUOpen documentation identifies FSR Upscaling as supported on RDNA 4 and RDNA 3 discrete graphics, while its consumer compatibility table lists RX 9000 series for the full Redstone feature set and RX 7000 series for upscaling only. These are published graphics-card categories, not proof that every handheld with an integrated GPU supports ML-based FSR Upscaling. Check the current AMD supported-game and compatibility information and the game’s own graphics menu.

Use the game’s FSR option first
If the game offers FSR Upscaling or FSR 4 natively, enable it in the game’s graphics settings. For a supported title that uses FSR 3.1 or later, AMD describes an AMD Software upgrade route; its instructions say to enable the game’s FSR 3.1 option and then choose the desired in-game preset after the upgrade is enabled. The precise menu labels and availability vary by title.
AMD recommends game-integrated FSR over driver-level Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) when a game has native support, because game-specific optimization may produce better results. RSR is a separate feature, not a universal handheld fallback: AMD’s RSR FAQ describes a Windows desktop/discrete Radeon compatibility requirement.

Choose a preset by balancing clarity and GPU load
AMD’s current FSR Upscaling documentation gives the following input-resolution ratios. Percentages are the rendered input resolution per output dimension; they are mode ratios, not promises of a particular frame-rate gain.

Start at Balanced, then inspect fine detail, edges, and motion in the actual game. Move to Quality if the image looks too soft and performance has room; try Performance if you are short of your frame-rate target and can accept reduced detail. Preset names do not guarantee identical image quality across games because implementations differ. AMD’s FSR Upscaling documentation lists the mode ratios.

Adjust other graphics settings only as needed
Keep the handheld’s native display/output target where sensible, and reduce demanding in-game options only if needed to reach a stable performance target. Lowering internal resolution through an upscaling preset can reduce rendering work, but the result depends on the game and does not guarantee a fixed FPS increase.
Do not copy a “low” or “medium” preset from another handheld, or blindly raise TDP or change system-level settings. Sustained power and thermal limits differ by device. GOALS AB’s handheld profile uses Balanced as its baseline and tunes settings around device capability and sustained thermals; that is a developer’s approach for one game, not a universal AMD preset. If the game exposes a sharpening slider, adjust it in small steps and judge the result in motion—there is no established universal handheld sharpening value.

Treat frame generation as a separate, optional setting
Upscaling changes the rendered input resolution; frame generation interpolates additional frames. Get a stable base frame rate first, then test frame generation only if the game supports it. AMD’s FSR 3.1.5 documentation says frame generation works best from at least 60 fps before interpolation; artifacts become more noticeable below 60 fps, and AMD advises avoiding pre-interpolation rates below 30 fps. This is guidance, not a guarantee that a handheld or game will reach those rates.
If the base rate is below your target, reduce rendering load or leave frame generation off rather than relying on interpolation to fix an unstable experience.

A practical adjustment order
- Confirm compatibility: check the game’s graphics menu and AMD’s current supported-game information to see whether native FSR Upscaling is available or an AMD Software upgrade route applies.
- Enable the game’s own FSR option: if the supported upgrade route applies, follow AMD Software and in-game prompts; menu labels differ by title.
- Set Balanced: play a representative scene and check fine detail, edges, motion, and frame-rate stability.
- Compare Quality or Performance: choose Quality for more clarity when headroom allows, or Performance when you need to reduce load; reassess the image after each change.
- Trim demanding graphics options if necessary: make small changes with your handheld’s sustained power and thermal behavior in mind.
- Test frame generation last: turn it on only if supported and after the base frame rate is healthy; otherwise leave it off.
- Fine-tune sharpening only if available: use small adjustments, since there is no universal value for handhelds.
