Gardevoir is the stronger default when you compare the two Pokémon as named. It is the final form of its line, it has a dual Psychic/Fairy typing, and its listed weaknesses cover fewer of the common attacking types that trouble Kadabra. Kadabra is not the weaker choice in every situation, though. It is an earlier stage that evolves into Alakazam, and whether either one is “better” depends on the game, the format, the moves you can teach it, and the team around it.
Start with what the two Pokémon actually are
Kadabra and Gardevoir sit at different points in their evolution lines, so the comparison has to be stated carefully. Kadabra evolves from Abra and can evolve further into Alakazam. Gardevoir is the end of the Ralts–Kirlia–Gardevoir line. Kirlia also has a second branch: a male Kirlia evolves into Gallade rather than Gardevoir, according to the official Pokémon Pokédex entries for both species.
That means the most direct comparison is Kadabra against Gardevoir as named, which is what this article covers. If you are asking about each line’s final form, the matchup is Alakazam against Gardevoir instead, and the answer shifts. Check which one you mean before you apply the verdict below.

Why the typing matters more than it looks
Kadabra is pure Psychic, so it takes double damage from Bug, Ghost, and Dark. Gardevoir adds Fairy, which changes the picture in two directions. Fairy resists Bug, Dark, and Fighting, so Gardevoir takes normal damage from the Bug and Dark moves that threaten Kadabra. It also takes double damage from Poison and Steel, which Kadabra does not. Ghost stays a weakness for both.

In practice, Gardevoir trades two of Kadabra’s three weaknesses for two new ones. Whether that is an improvement depends on which types your opponents actually use. Poison and Steel attacks are common in many formats, so the trade is not automatically favorable.
Abilities: a small overlap with different payoffs
Both species share Synchronize, which passes a burn, poison, or paralysis status back to an opponent that inflicts it. Kadabra’s second standard ability, Inner Focus, prevents flinching, which matters against moves that can cause a flinch. Gardevoir’s second standard ability, Trace, copies an opponent’s ability when it enters battle, which can be useful or unpredictable depending on the matchup.

- Do you want the final form of the line? Gardevoir is the end of its line. If you want Kadabra, you are choosing a middle stage, and you should compare Alakazam instead if you are willing to evolve further.
- Do your opponents use a lot of Bug, Dark, or Fighting attacks? Gardevoir’s Fairy typing gives it resistance or neutral damage against these, while Kadabra takes extra damage from Bug and Dark.
- Do your opponents use a lot of Poison or Steel attacks? Gardevoir is weak to both. Kadabra takes normal damage from them and may be the safer choice in a format full of those types.
- Do you need Inner Focus or Trace? If flinch protection matters for your team, Kadabra’s Inner Focus is the more direct tool. If you want the flexibility to copy a strong opposing ability, Gardevoir’s Trace is the one to plan around.
- Is the game or format restricting Pokémon? Roster availability, move access, and item rules change by title and by format. Check that the species, its moves, and its ability are legal and obtainable before you build around either one.
The flavor text is not a competitive reason
The official Pokédex entry for Gardevoir says: “To protect its Trainer, it will expend all its psychic power to create a small black hole.” That line is flavor text. It describes the species’ lore and does not change how Gardevoir performs in battle, so it should not factor into a competitive choice.
Trading card games are a separate question
Both names appear on physical Pokémon Trading Card Game cards. The official Pokémon TCG database lists a Kadabra card in the Paldean Fates set as a Stage 1 Pokémon that evolves from Abra, and a Gardevoir ex card in the Scarlet & Violet set that evolves from Kirlia. Those card records do not establish which species is stronger in the main-series video games, and a card’s usefulness in a card-game deck depends on the format and the rest of the deck.

What this comparison cannot tell you
No head-to-head statistic across the main-series games establishes a universal winner between Kadabra and Gardevoir. A stat-by-stat ranking would need game-specific data for both species, which the official entries cited here do not provide. The typing, weakness, and ability facts above are reliable for the reference sources named, but the battle result will depend on moves, levels, items, opponents, and the rules of the format you are playing.
For most players, the practical answer is this: pick Gardevoir if you want the final Psychic/Fairy form and its typing fits the threats you face. Pick Kadabra if you specifically want the middle stage, Inner Focus, or a Psychic-only typing that suits your opponents better.
