There is no evidence-backed “best” race in Ashes of Creation. Choose the culture and character look you want, then check current race stats and confirmed racial augments if you are optimizing for a particular class. A community guide says classes are not race-locked, but it does not establish how much race affects performance or which race is strongest.
Does your race lock you out of a class?
No, according to the community-maintained Ashes101 race overview: it says classes are not race-locked. That means you should distinguish class access from optimization. A race may have a stat or augment interaction that suits a build, but that is different from being required to play the class.
Can race affect gameplay?
The Ashes101 overview says races have different baseline stats and that those differences can affect class performance. It also says the size of any end-game difference is unknown. Treat race as a possible gameplay modifier, not a proven best-in-slot decision: the available information does not support a numerical ranking or a claim that one race is best for a particular class.
Racial augments are also part of the design described by the guide, but its augment list and whether subraces receive distinct augments were not known. Without current, confirmed effects, a build-by-build race recommendation would be speculation.

How to choose a race
- Start with the character you want to play. Consider the culture, silhouette, lore, and role-play fantasy you will enjoy. Do not treat an unverified advantage as mandatory.
- Check class access separately. The guide says classes are not race-locked, so do not choose a race on the assumption that another race cannot play your intended class.
- For optimization, verify the current mechanics. Check current in-game or official race statistics and confirmed racial augments for your intended class. Compare the actual effects rather than relying on old or incomplete lists.
- Account for how settled the information is. The official Steam listing presents the game as an Early Access MMORPG and surfaces a December 11, 2025 release date. That store information does not establish current race availability, balance, or mechanics, so time-sensitive build advice should be tied to the game version or date when those details are confirmed.
What is known about the race roster?
The Ashes101 guide names Aela Humans (Kaelar and Vaelune), Dünzenkell Dwarves (Dünir and Niküa), Pyrian Elves (Empyrean and Py’Rai), Kaivek Orcs (Ren’Kai), as well as Vek and Tulnar. Its claim of a nine-race launch roster is difficult to reconcile with its family and subrace enumeration. Since current official roster and playable availability are not established here, use the guide as a provisional overview rather than a definitive count or availability list.
So, which race should you pick?
Pick the race whose appearance, culture, and character fantasy appeal to you most. If class optimization is your priority, compare verified current stats and racial augments for that class before deciding; the available evidence does not identify a best match or quantify the performance gap. Race is presented as meaningful, but the exact competitive consequences remain unsettled.
