Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) is the closest the series has come to open-world play, because it gives you the largest explorable planetary areas. BioWare’s producer, however, rejected the “open world” label for it, so the accurate description is an exploration-based game rather than a sandbox.
Why Andromeda is the answer
Of the Mass Effect games, Andromeda puts the most emphasis on exploring planets. Its official description casts you as a Pathfinder who charts the Andromeda galaxy, discovers alien worlds, and searches for a new home for humanity. The Mass Effect trilogy, by contrast, is built around Commander Shepard’s story and a more tightly controlled sequence of missions across known space.

What “open world” does and does not mean here
Andromeda has explorable spaces, including planetary areas where you can drive the Nomad vehicle across terrain. That is the strongest case for calling it open world. Its limits are just as clear:
- Planetary areas are bounded regions, not one uninterrupted map that spans the whole galaxy.
- Galaxy navigation and distinct alien worlds are official features, but BioWare’s official descriptions do not establish seamless travel between them.
- Story and mission progression still drive the experience, as in the earlier games.
What the developer said
BioWare producer Michael Gamble addressed the label directly in a 2017 interview report published by GameSpot on February 14, 2017. As relayed by GamesRadar, he said: “I definitely wouldn’t call Andromeda an open-world game.” He added that the team liked the term “exploration-based game.” That phrasing is the most precise official framing of the game’s design, and it is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing it into “open world.”

#1 Best Overall
- Mass Effect: Andromeda takes players to the Andromeda galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, players will lead our fight for a new home in hostile territory as the Pathfinder - a leader of military-trained explorers. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival.
- Play as the Pathfinder - a leader of a squad of military-trained explorers - with deep progression and customisation systems. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda Galaxy.
- As you unfold the mysteries of the Andromeda Galaxy and the hope for humanity lies on your shoulders - You must ask yourself... How far will you go?
Comparing the games by what you explore
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition (the original trilogy, collected as the cinematic Commander Shepard trilogy): structured, story-led progression with mission-based exploration. BioWare’s official game page lists the three constituent games: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3.
- Mass Effect: Andromeda: the largest planetary exploration in the series, with vehicle travel on some worlds and a galaxy-navigation focus. EA’s March 21, 2017 announcement said the team placed “more emphasis on exploration” while keeping the franchise’s characters and combat.
How to answer the question precisely
If you mean “which Mass Effect game lets you roam explorable planets most freely,” the answer is Andromeda. If you mean a seamless, unrestricted world with no loading or story gating, no Mass Effect game fits that description, and BioWare has not claimed one. Andromeda is best described as an exploration-based Mass Effect game with open-feeling planetary areas.
