Start with NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy if you want Naruto’s story in the clearest sequence. It bundles the first three numbered Storm games, moving from Naruto’s origins through Shippuden, the Akatsuki conflicts and the beginning of the Great Ninja War. Choose NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS instead if you want one current standalone title, a Naruto-and-Sasuke recap, a separate Boruto story and an officially described one-button control option.
The short answer by player priority
| If you care most about… | Best starting point | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Following Naruto’s story from the beginning | Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy | The package presents the first three Storm campaigns in sequence: Naruto’s origins, Shippuden and the Akatsuki, then the beginning of the Great Ninja War. | The cited Nintendo listing is for Nintendo Switch and shows an April 26, 2018 release date. Check your regional storefront for the edition you can actually buy. |
| Owning every numbered Storm game in one collection | Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy | Bandai Namco describes it as a collection of Storm, Storm 2, Storm 3: Full Burst and Storm 4: Road to Boruto. | The publisher’s listed platforms are PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC; availability can vary by region and store. |
| One title with simplified inputs | Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS | Its Simple Control Mode lets a player perform actions from Chakra Dash to complex combos with one button, according to Bandai Namco. | This describes an input feature, not proof that every mode or encounter is easier. |
| A condensed Naruto/Sasuke narrative plus Boruto | STORM CONNECTIONS | Its story feature selects scenes from Naruto’s childhood through the final battle with Sasuke and adds a separate, exclusive Boruto story. | It is not presented as a complete replay of every earlier campaign. |
What each Naruto game actually contains
Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy: the chronological entry
The Trilogy is a three-game package rather than a new remake. Nintendo’s official Switch description says: “Start with Naruto’s origins in Ultimate Ninja Storm, relive Shippuden and his ferocious battles with Akatsuki in Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, and experience the beginning of the Great Ninja War in Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, all in one game!” That wording makes it the clearest cited route for a newcomer who wants to play the numbered stories in order.

The package also includes past downloadable content, described on the listing as missions, outfits and episodes. Those additions are part of the bundle’s contents; they do not turn it into a fourth Storm game. The Switch listing displays April 26, 2018 as its release date, so a listing for another platform or a later storefront edition should be checked separately rather than assumed to match the Switch package.
Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy: the four-game publisher collection
Legacy is the broadest numbered-game collection named by Bandai Namco. It brings together Storm, Storm 2, Storm 3: Full Burst and Storm 4: Road to Boruto. The publisher’s product page lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
#1 Best Overall
- Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Naruto's Debut!
- THE LARGEST ROSTER OF PLAYABLE CHARACTERS EVER - Largest roster of characters to play as than any Ultimate Ninja STORM game in the past
- New additions include the brothers who started legendary ninja clans, Ashura and Indra Otsutsuki, more to come
- For the first time in one game, relive selected scenes from Naruto’s childhood until his final battle with Sasuke through anime scenes & battles
- Players of past Ultimate Ninja STORM games can see it all with updated graphics. Plus, experience a new Boruto story exclusive to the game
The original release years given on that page are 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017 respectively. Those dates identify the games represented in the collection; they are not a promise that every regional store still sells the same bundle or that the collection has a current release on every modern console. If your goal is to play all four numbered entries, Legacy is the cited collection to investigate first. If you only need the first three story arcs, Trilogy is the more focused package.
Bandai Namco’s Legacy page also states that more than 16 million NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja Storm games have sold worldwide. The page does not give a dated snapshot, so the figure should be read as the publisher’s undated series claim, not as a current sales count or evidence that Legacy is the best fit for a new player.
Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS: a modern single-title option
Bandai Namco calls STORM CONNECTIONS the next entry in the series and lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. It combines several different reasons a beginner might choose one game instead of a collection.
Its narrative feature focuses on the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke. The publisher describes selected scenes spanning Naruto’s childhood through the pair’s final battle, then lists a separate story made specifically around Boruto. This is a curated summary, not a claim that the game reproduces every mission, scene or campaign from the earlier Storm releases.

- New Generation Systems - With the power of the new generation systems, this brand new game will take players through an incredible journey of beautifully Anime-rendered fights!
- Change Leader System - Recreate all the legendary teams from Naruto Shippuden or create your own team! Players will be able to switch characters during the fight!
- New Features - Enjoy fast-paced fights with the Wall-run!
- Incredible Roster - The most impressive collection in the history of Naruto games will span the Naruto Shippuden story arc and capture the latest character appearances from the anime.
- Original Voiceover Support - Includes the Japanese, American, Mexican and Brazilian voiceover cast!
The game also advertises Simple Control Mode. Bandai Namco’s exact feature description says: “The new Simple Control Mode lets users perform a series of actions with a single button, from a Chakra Dash to complex combos.” That makes Connections the only option in this comparison with an explicitly documented low-input setting.
How the story order differs
| Game or package | Story material identified by the official description | How to use it as a beginner |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy | Naruto’s origins; Shippuden and battles with the Akatsuki; the beginning of the Great Ninja War. | Play the three included games in package order for the most straightforward progression among the cited options. |
| Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy | All four numbered Storm games, ending with Storm 4: Road to Boruto. | Use it when you want the complete numbered collection and are prepared to move beyond Trilogy’s third-game stopping point. |
| STORM CONNECTIONS | Selected Naruto-and-Sasuke scenes, plus an exclusive Boruto story. | Use it as a condensed introduction or a single-game route, not as a substitute for every earlier campaign. |
For a first playthrough based on narrative order, begin with the first Storm in Trilogy, continue to Storm 2, then Storm 3. Someone using Legacy can follow the same first three steps and continue to Storm 4: Road to Boruto. Connections is organized around a recap and its own Boruto material, so it does not occupy the same “play every campaign in sequence” role.
Choose according to the experience you want
You want to learn Naruto through the games
Pick Trilogy. Its official description explicitly starts with Naruto’s origins before moving into Shippuden, Akatsuki battles and the Great Ninja War. That progression gives a newcomer a defined first game and a natural next game without requiring knowledge of the franchise’s release history.
Begin with the first included Storm rather than jumping directly to the second or third. You will then encounter the story beats in the order the package advertises. Treat the included missions, outfits and episodes as additional material around the campaigns, not as a reason to reorder the main games.

You want every numbered Storm release
Choose Legacy if its listed platform and regional edition are available to you. It is the only cited package that includes all four numbered entries. The sequence is Storm (2008), Storm 2 (2010), Storm 3: Full Burst (2013) and Storm 4: Road to Boruto (2017), using the years supplied on Bandai Namco’s product page.
This route is useful if you already know you want the material beyond the Great Ninja War opening represented in Trilogy. It is less useful if your immediate goal is simply to sample Naruto’s beginning and decide later whether to continue.
You want one purchase and no multi-game commitment
Connections is the cleaner fit when you prefer a single standalone title. Its listed platforms cover current and previous PlayStation and Xbox generations, PC and Switch, subject to regional storefront differences. The game gives you a selected Naruto/Sasuke narrative and a separate Boruto story within one product.

You need fewer button combinations
Connections has the strongest documented case because Simple Control Mode is an explicit feature. The publisher says one button can perform a sequence ranging from Chakra Dash to complex combos. That can reduce the number of inputs you need to memorize when learning the system.
There is no cited comparative difficulty test showing that Connections is easier in every battle, mode or story section. Select the mode for its input design, then check the game’s own settings and tutorials for the exact controls available on your platform.
You specifically want Boruto material
Connections is the option whose official feature list names a separate exclusive Boruto story. Legacy includes Storm 4: Road to Boruto, so a player interested in that era should distinguish between the collection’s included numbered entry and Connections’ separately described Boruto storyline. The available descriptions do not establish that the two stories are identical.
Platform and regional availability: verify before buying
The three choices do not share the same platform list. Trilogy’s cited listing establishes a Nintendo Switch edition. Legacy’s publisher page lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Connections is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
Best Value
- The Largest Roster of Playable Characters Ever: This game has the largest roster of beloved characters to play than any Ultimate Ninja STORM game in the past. New additions include the brothers who started legendary ninja clans, Ashura and Indra Otsutsuki. Stay tuned for more playable characters!
- The Story of Naruto and Sasuke’s Rivalry Combined into One! The official Naruto catalogue warns that information can vary by region and may only be current as of publication. That matters for digital delistings, physical stock, language editions and bundle names. The platform lists above identify editions established by the cited official pages; they do not establish that every edition is currently in stock.
- Identify your exact hardware: Switch, PlayStation 4 or 5, Xbox One or Series X|S, or PC.
- Open the official regional storefront rather than relying on a search result from another country.
- Match the product name precisely. “Trilogy,” “Legacy” and “Connections” are different packages with different contents.
- Check whether the listing is a physical copy, a digital edition or a bundle, and confirm that the included games are stated on the product page.
- Confirm the storefront’s region, language information and current availability before paying. Prices, stock and online activity are not established by the cited material.
A practical first-play route
Route A: story-first on Switch
- Locate the regional Switch listing for Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy.
- Confirm that the package includes the three Storm games and the additional missions, outfits and episodes described by Nintendo.
- Start with the first Ultimate Ninja Storm.
- Continue to Storm 2 for the Shippuden and Akatsuki material.
- Finish with Storm 3, which reaches the beginning of the Great Ninja War according to the official description.
Route B: all numbered games on PlayStation, Xbox or PC
- Check whether Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy is listed for your regional PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC storefront.
- Play Storm, Storm 2, Storm 3: Full Burst and Storm 4: Road to Boruto in that order.
- Use the collection when you want the fourth numbered entry as part of the same purchase; do not assume Trilogy contains it.
Route C: one-game recap with simplified inputs
- Choose a regional edition of STORM CONNECTIONS on one of its listed platforms.
- Enable Simple Control Mode if you want the one-button action scheme described by Bandai Namco.
- Use its Naruto-and-Sasuke story feature as a selected recap.
- Play the separate Boruto story if that is the part of the package that interests you.
- Switch to Trilogy or Legacy later if the recap leaves you wanting the earlier campaigns in full.
What the official descriptions do—and do not—tell you
The cited pages establish story coverage, package contents, named platforms and the Simple Control Mode feature. They do not establish current prices, retailer inventory, physical availability, online population, regional discounts or which title has the strongest combat system. Those factors change by date and region and require a current store check or a dated independent review.
They also do not provide a controlled comparison of overall difficulty. Connections’ one-button feature is concrete; it should not be expanded into a claim that the entire game is easier than Trilogy or Legacy. Likewise, the more-than-130-playable-character figure in Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s 2024 launch announcement is a roster claim for Connections, not a measurement of beginner-friendliness or a guarantee that every character is available in every mode.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bandai Namco’s Legacy launch announcement includes a statement from Eric Hartness, then vice president of marketing at Bandai Namco Entertainment America, that the franchise had delivered “intense combat, deep gameplay, and visual spectacle” since the first game released in 2008. That is a publisher executive’s description of the series, not independent testing; use it as context rather than as a comparative verdict.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying Connections expecting every campaign: its official story description covers selected Naruto-and-Sasuke scenes and a separate Boruto story, not every prior mission.
- Buying Trilogy expecting the fourth numbered game: Trilogy’s cited coverage ends with the beginning of the Great Ninja War in Storm 3; Legacy is the named four-game collection.
- Assuming a platform list is worldwide stock: the official catalogue warns that details vary by region and date.
- Treating Simple Control Mode as a universal easy mode: the documented claim concerns how actions are performed, not comparative challenge across the whole game.
- Using sales or roster size as a starting-point test: more than 16 million sold is an undated publisher series figure, while more than 130 playable characters is a 2024 launch-announcement claim for Connections. Neither answers which entry best suits your first playthrough.
Final recommendation
For most newcomers, Trilogy is the safest starting point because its official description supplies a beginning, middle and clearly identified stopping point across the first three Storm games. Move to Legacy when you want all four numbered releases and its platform list matches your system. Pick Connections when a single title, a Naruto/Sasuke recap, an exclusive Boruto story or the documented Simple Control Mode matters more than playing every earlier campaign in order.
