The original Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DS Lite can play Game Boy Advance cartridges, but only in single-player mode. The Nintendo DSi and DSi XL cannot play GBA cartridges, because they do not support the GBA Game Pak slot. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges are a separate case and do not play on the DS or DS Lite.
Which DS models play GBA games
Only two members of the Nintendo DS family have the GBA Game Pak slot that GBA cartridges require. The table below lists each model and the limits that apply to it.
| DS model | Plays GBA cartridges | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo DS | Yes | Single-player mode only. Nintendo’s support article states this for the original DS and DS Lite. |
| Nintendo DS Lite | Yes | Single-player mode only. Nintendo’s DS Lite Operations Manual states that the console is compatible with GBA Game Paks in single-player mode. |
| Nintendo DSi | No | Peripherals and functions that depend on the GBA Game Pak slot are incompatible. Nintendo’s DSi Operations Manual is the source for this. |
| Nintendo DSi XL | No | Shares the DSi hardware design, which does not support the GBA Game Pak slot. |
What “single-player only” means
Nintendo’s support article lists “Game Boy Advance games in single-player mode only” among what the original DS and DS Lite can play, and “Game Boy Advance games in multi-player mode” among what they cannot. If a GBA game depends on linking two systems, the DS hardware is not built to run it.
The reason is hardware. Nintendo says the DS and DS Lite have no link cable port, and that they did not include a special processor Nintendo describes as required for older software compatibility. Both constraints apply to multiplayer play with GBA titles, so a single DS or DS Lite is the only setup that works for these games.

- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
Why the DSi and DSi XL cannot play GBA games
The DSi lineup does not include the GBA Game Pak slot. Nintendo’s DSi Operations Manual says that peripherals using that slot are incompatible with the DSi. The manual names the Nintendo DS Browser Card, the DS and DS Lite Memory Expansion Paks, and the DS Rumble Pak as examples. Because the slot is absent, a GBA cartridge has nothing to connect to on a DSi or DSi XL.
Accessories that do not work, even on compatible models
A GBA slot does not mean every GBA-era accessory will work. Nintendo’s DS Lite Operations Manual lists the following as unsupported on the DS Lite:
Rank #2
- Nintendo DS Powder Blue
- HardwarePlatform: Nintendo DS
- OperatingSystem: Nintendo DS
- GBA Link cable
- GBA Wireless Adapter
- e-Reader
- GameCube GBA cable
- Game Boy Printer
- Game Boy Camera
The same accessory limits apply to the original DS in practice, since the GBA slot and link port constraints are shared across the two compatible models.
Game Boy and Game Boy Color are a separate case
Having a GBA slot does not mean the console reads older Game Boy formats. Nintendo says the DS and DS Lite cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges, and Nintendo UK’s support answer on the DS Lite reaches the same conclusion. If your library is mostly original Game Boy or Game Boy Color titles, a DS or DS Lite will not play them.

A Game Boy Advance-family system may be an alternative for some libraries, but check the specific model’s compatibility with the cartridges you own before buying.
Choosing between the original DS and the DS Lite
For GBA play, both compatible models are functionally equivalent in what the official sources describe: each runs GBA cartridges in single-player mode. The sources do not include a comparative test of performance or game-library coverage between the two, so this article does not rank them on those points. The practical choice usually comes down to which form factor you prefer and which console is in better condition.

- Confirm the console is an original DS or DS Lite, not a DSi or DSi XL. A DSi-family console will not run GBA cartridges.
- Look for a visible GBA Game Pak slot on the console, and test it with a GBA cartridge before you rely on it.
- Check the cartridge contacts and the console’s slot for dirt or damage, since both affect whether a cartridge is read.
- Do not expect multiplayer GBA games or the listed accessories to work, even on a compatible model.
- Check current listings directly for price, condition, and availability, since these change and are not covered here.
Nintendo’s support material on this subject is the most direct guidance available, and it sets the boundaries above.
