Several famous open-world games tie GTA V on Metacritic rather than score higher.
What does “reviewed higher than GTA V” mean?
It means a game has a higher score than GTA V on the same review source and comparable platform or edition listing. Scores from different aggregators should not be mixed as if they were on one scale: each uses its own review pool and scoring method.

Metacritic’s GTA V page, accessed in 2026, reports a 97 Metascore based on 66 critic reviews and categorizes the game as Open-World Action. The page lists an initial release date of November 18, 2014. See Metacritic’s GTA V listing.
Which open-world games score higher on Metacritic?
On Metacritic’s all-time open-world-action ranking, the listed scores above GTA V’s 97 are Ocarina of Time at 99 and Grand Theft Auto IV at 98. Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2 are both listed at 97, so neither is higher on that ranking.

Why do other rankings name different leaders?
HostedGG describes its ranking as a blend of Metacritic (55%) and OpenCritic (45%), with scores verified in June 2026. Its combined figures put Elden Ring at 95 and GTA V at 94; Red Dead Redemption 2 is also 94, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is 93. On that ranking’s method, Elden Ring is higher than GTA V, while the other two named games are not.

HostedGG summarizes its own result this way: “By combined critic score, Grand Theft Auto V and Elden Ring sit at the very top, with Red Dead Redemption 2 close behind.” That is the publisher’s description of its combined ranking, not a universal industry verdict. See HostedGG’s ranking and method.

Not on the Metacritic scores cited here. Metacritic’s 2016–2026 open-world-action ranking lists Breath of the Wild at 97, Red Dead Redemption 2 at 97, Tears of the Kingdom at 96, and Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at 95. Against GTA V’s 97 on its individual page, none of those figures is higher. The category view and individual game pages may represent different editions or listings, so this is a comparison of displayed scores, not a claim that every platform version has an identical rating. How to choose among the higher-scoring games
A higher aggregate score does not mean a game will be a better fit for every player. Use score as one filter, then consider what kind of world and play you want:
- Ocarina of Time: a fantasy adventure rather than a contemporary crime sandbox.
- Grand Theft Auto IV: a crime-focused urban open world, closer in broad subject matter to GTA V.
- Elden Ring: the higher-rated option in HostedGG’s combined ranking; its result is specific to that ranking’s weighting.
Before comparing or buying, check the exact platform and edition: the score attached to one listing does not automatically apply to another. Also compare the experience you want—story emphasis, combat, traversal, and solo or online play—rather than treating an aggregate rating as a personal recommendation.
