What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose the launcher around the games you want and the features you will actually use. Xbox is a natural fit if you want Game Pass access, supported cloud gaming, or one place to see installed games from several PC storefronts. Steam is a strong choice for its documented community, Workshop, and Remote Play features. Battle.net or Epic Games Store may be necessary for a particular game or publisher. Many PC players use more than one launcher; no single app makes every game’s purchases, accounts, saves, or multiplayer interchangeable.
Start with the game, not the launcher
Before choosing an app, check the specific game’s store page and support information. Confirm where it is available, which account or client it requires, and whether any feature you care about—such as cross-play or cross-progression—is supported for that title. A launcher preference cannot override a game’s storefront or account requirements.

That matters especially if you are comparing Xbox, Battle.net, Steam, and Epic Games Store as though they were interchangeable libraries. Microsoft’s Xbox app can show installed games from other PC storefronts, but that is a convenience for finding and launching games, not evidence that Xbox replaces another store’s purchase or account relationship. Microsoft’s September 15, 2025 announcement describes the aggregated library as including Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts on Windows PCs and handheld devices; it does not guarantee that every storefront or game will appear. | Launcher | Best reason to consider it | What to verify for a specific game |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox PC app | Game Pass discovery and downloads, cloud gaming for supported games, and access to installed games from other PC storefronts are described on Microsoft’s Xbox PC app page. | Whether the game is included in your subscription, supports cloud gaming, and requires a separate store or account. Availability and support are title- and service-dependent. |
| Steam | Valve documents community features, Workshop content, reviews, achievements, controller support, and Remote Play options on its Steam platform page and Remote Play page. | Whether the particular game supports Workshop, Remote Play, or the Steam features you want. Support is not universal. |
| Battle.net | Consider it when the game you want is tied to Battle.net or its publisher. | Check the game’s current listing and support information for availability, required client and account, and features. The sources cited here do not establish a comparable feature-by-feature profile. |
| Epic Games Store | Consider it when the game you want is sold there or tied to that storefront. | Check the game’s current listing and support information for availability, required client and account, and features. The sources cited here do not establish a comparable feature-by-feature profile. |
The cited feature counts for Steam are Valve’s own descriptions, not an independently audited comparison: its platform page says “nearly 30,000 games” and Workshop support for “nearly 1,000 games.” Both rounded counts can change. The same page lists 28 supported client languages, more than 100 payment methods across more than 35 currencies, plus chat, game hubs, mobile access, early access, achievements, reviews, recommendations, and controller support. These are Valve-published figures and feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every game or payment method is available to every user. Steam’s platform page

Choose by the feature that matters most
If you want a subscription library or cloud gaming
Consider the Xbox PC app if Game Pass is central to how you play. Microsoft describes the app as a place to discover and download games through Game Pass, play supported console games on PC through cloud gaming, chat across PC, mobile, and console, and access installed games from other storefronts. Check the individual game’s listing and the service’s current availability before relying on a particular title or cloud feature. Xbox PC app
If you value community tools, Workshop, or streaming from your PC
Steam is worth considering for its community hubs, chat, reviews, achievements, recommendations, and Workshop content. Workshop availability is game-specific, despite Valve’s platform page describing support for nearly 1,000 games. Steam platform features

Steam Remote Play lets a host PC run a game and stream it to supported devices, including another PC, phone, tablet, TV, or VR device. Remote Play Together lets invited friends join supported local multiplayer games online; the host owns and runs the game. The game, device, and connection must support the feature, so check Valve’s current Remote Play information for requirements.
If a game points you to Battle.net or Epic Games Store
Use the store and client required by that game’s current listing. If you are deciding between these launchers for broader features rather than a particular title, compare their current official product and support information for the exact functions you need. The available sources here do not support ranking their broader feature sets against Xbox or Steam.

Subscriptions, purchases, and combined libraries are different things
A game appearing in a launcher does not by itself tell you whether you own it, can play it through a subscription, or need a separate account. In the Xbox app, access to installed games from other storefronts is a library-aggregation feature; it does not establish that an Xbox subscription includes those games or replaces their storefront accounts or purchases. Check the game’s listing for the access method and terms that apply to you.
Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program offers cross-entitlement and cross-progression for participating titles, including saves, progress, achievements, and related game data. It applies to eligible games, not every game bought on Xbox or PC. Look for the program designation on the game’s listing and consult Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere description.

Cross-play and cross-progression depend on the game
Do not assume that choosing a particular launcher guarantees that you can play with friends on another platform or carry progress between platforms. Microsoft says cross-play between Xbox console and PC, and with other platforms, is at game creators’ discretion. Cross-play, cross-progression, and save portability should therefore be checked separately for each title; one does not imply the others. Microsoft’s December 2024 developer guidance
A practical way to decide
- Name the game. Check where it is currently sold and whether its listing requires a particular client or publisher account.
- Identify how you will access it. Confirm whether you plan to buy it or rely on a subscription, and check the title’s current availability under that option.
- Check the features you will use. Look up cloud gaming, Workshop or mod support, Remote Play, cross-play, cross-progression, and save portability on the game’s own listing or support page.
- Choose the launcher that fits your library and habits. If you use multiple stores, expect to keep multiple clients or accounts even if an app can aggregate installed games.
If you do not have a specific game in mind, choose based on the documented features you value: Xbox for its Game Pass and supported cloud-gaming pathway; Steam for its community, Workshop, and Remote Play tools. For Battle.net or Epic Games Store, start with the games you want and verify their current requirements rather than assuming a broader feature ranking.
