For steadier play in Gears of War: E-Day, first find out whether the problem is a GPU limit, a CPU limit, or shader-compilation delay. Then change one setting at a time and compare both the built-in benchmark and the gameplay scene where the problem occurs. If your GPU is the limit, test output resolution and upscaling before broadly cutting visual quality; if it is CPU-limited, lowering image detail may do little.
Start with a repeatable baseline
- Update and restart. Confirm the game and graphics driver are current. If you update the driver, restart the game before comparing results.
- Run the built-in benchmark. Use your current resolution and preset, and record the result. Note whether you are dealing with consistently low frame rates, intermittent hitching, or a crash; they may have different causes.
- Test the problem scene. Revisit the same gameplay area where the issue occurs. Tom’s Hardware found the benchmark a useful approximation, but not an exact match for its in-game scenes (Tom’s Hardware’s performance analysis).
- Check for a likely bottleneck. If you already use a trusted monitoring overlay, observe CPU and GPU use over a stretch of gameplay, not just a single moment. Treat it as a clue alongside the repeatable tests, not a diagnosis from one snapshot.
Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same benchmark and gameplay check. Compare frame-rate consistency and low-frame behavior as well as the average; a higher benchmark score is not enough if the hitch still appears in the problem scene.
If the PC appears GPU-limited
Test output resolution first
Try a lower output resolution before reducing several detail settings at once. In one reviewer’s report, a Ryzen 7 9700X, RTX 5070 and 32 GB system ran at about 50 FPS at 4K High; the writer described smoother gameplay after switching to 1440p with Performance upscaling. That is a hardware-specific observation, not a controlled result for every PC or upscaler (Tom’s Guide’s PC review).
Compare available upscaling modes
Steam’s indexed listing names NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR “Redstone,” as well as optional frame generation and Multi Frame Generation on supported hardware (Steam’s Gears of War: E-Day listing). Availability depends on hardware and feature support. Try one mode at a time and judge the image at your usual display resolution and viewing distance. The reviewed sources do not establish a universally best upscaler or quality mode.

Frame generation is a separate option from lowering the game’s rendered base frame rate. Do not assume it will improve input responsiveness or resolve a CPU bottleneck; use it only where your hardware supports it, and assess whether the result feels better in play.
If the CPU appears limiting—or frame pacing remains poor
Lowering resolution primarily reduces GPU work, so it may not help when the CPU is the constraint. Repeat the same scene after each change rather than assuming that a lower resolution must improve performance.
Do not enable Low Core Mode as a general fix
Tom’s Hardware tested 25 CPUs and reported lower performance across that tested pool with Low Core Mode, with no improvement to 1% lows. Its exception was a deliberately reduced two-core configuration with streaming and freezing problems; in that particular test, the mode helped. That edge case does not support turning it on by default (Tom’s Hardware’s performance analysis).

- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.
- OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)
The same testing illustrates why results depend on the system: Tom’s Hardware reported 42% higher performance for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D than a Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High in its test setup. That is a comparison between processors, not an expected gain from changing a game setting.
If the delay happens at first launch or looks shader-related
Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) is intended to deliver precompiled shaders and reduce shader compilation work. Microsoft reports an approximately 95% reduction in shader-compilation time for supported configurations; this figure is not a claim of 95% less overall game stutter. For E-Day, Microsoft’s documented path is to install the Xbox PC app before downloading the game to experience ASD. Its published requirements include Windows 11 24H2 or higher and compatible GPU and driver support. Check Microsoft’s current Advanced Shader Delivery guidance for requirements and availability, which may change. ASD does not establish a remedy for unrelated CPU or GPU limits, network problems, crashes, or game defects.
What the published system requirements can—and cannot—tell you
Tom’s Guide lists a recommended tier that includes an RTX 5060, RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT or RX 9060 XT, alongside 16 GB RAM and 115 GB storage (Tom’s Guide’s PC review). Treat that as a baseline for comparison, not a promise that any particular preset will be stable. Performance still depends on the processor, resolution, scene, settings and supported features.

If your PC is below that graphics tier and remains GPU-limited after trying resolution and supported upscaling options, a graphics-card upgrade may be worth considering. It will not by itself address shader compilation, CPU limits or crashes.

The official beta FAQ said stability and performance work was still in progress during the beta; that warning should not be read as a statement about the current launch build. The FAQ also noted that Intel Arc shaders were being recompiled on each launch at the time, and advised Arc A580/B580 users experiencing poor performance to verify ReBAR and Above 4G Decoding. These are beta-era notes, not universal launch troubleshooting instructions. Check the official beta FAQ for that context and current official support information before applying hardware-specific advice.

How to decide whether a change is worth keeping
- Frame pacing: Does the same scene show more consistent performance and fewer recurring low-frame events?
- Image quality: Is the difference acceptable at your normal display resolution and viewing distance?
- Cause: Does the change target the likely GPU, CPU or shader-compilation problem rather than a different symptom?
- Compatibility: Is the feature supported by your GPU, driver and game configuration?
There is no reviewed, controlled launch-build ranking of individual sliders such as shadows, reflections, geometry or ray tracing, and no evidence-backed all-hardware best preset. Treat any such slider changes as experiments: adjust one, repeat the test, and keep it only if the improvement is visible in the scene that matters to you.
