That is a brief burst’s cyclic rate, not a practical or sustained firing rate.
What does the VP70M’s 2,200-round-per-minute figure mean?
American Rifleman reported in 2014 that the VP70M cycles at 2,200 rounds per minute when firing its three-round burst with the polymer shoulder stock attached. A 1977 account in American Handgunner likewise describes the stock activating the burst mechanism and gives a rate of about 2,200 rounds per minute.
“Cyclic rate” describes how quickly the mechanism fires during a burst. It does not mean the pistol can fire continuously for a minute at that pace, nor does it measure accuracy, controllability, or the rate a person can practically sustain.
How does it compare with the GLOCK G18C?
GLOCK lists the G18C’s full-automatic rate as approximately 20 rounds per second—about 1,200 rounds per minute—on its current product page. That is lower than the VP70M’s reported burst cyclic rate. The figures describe different firing modes and come from different kinds of sources: GLOCK’s current manufacturer specification for the G18C, and firearms publications’ reports for the VP70M.

Which VP70 variant fires in bursts?
The VP70M and VP70Z are not interchangeable variants. The VP70M is select-fire and can fire three-round bursts when configured with its stock; the VP70Z is semiautomatic-only. The 2,200-round-per-minute figure therefore applies to the VP70M’s burst configuration, not to every VP70 or to ordinary semiautomatic firing.
Can civilians buy a G18?
GLOCK says its select-fire G18 models are intended for eligible military and law-enforcement personnel and that it does not sell the G18 to the U.S. commercial market. Its U.S. FAQ also says conversion of a semiautomatic GLOCK with a machinegun conversion device or similar device is illegal and strictly prohibited under state and federal laws. That is GLOCK’s stated legal position; laws and circumstances can vary, so this is not legal advice.

Is the VP70M an all-time record holder?
The evidence supports calling the VP70M the fastest documented example among the sources reviewed, not a proven all-time record. The available figures do not establish an exhaustive ranking of every historical pistol design. A frequently repeated Beretta 93R rate is also disputed: one reference reports about 110 rounds per minute, while other results give substantially higher figures without equally strong sourcing. That disagreement is not a reliable basis for changing the comparison.
