Which Pokémon Games Support Moving Pokémon From Game Boy Advance Titles?

Original Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen cartridges can officially move Pokémon into Generation IV games through Pal Park. The documented procedure requires a Nintendo DS system with a working Game Boy Advance slot, the GBA Game Pak, and a compatible Generation IV cartridge. Migration is permanent: a Pokémon moved out of the GBA cartridge cannot be returned.

A separate route exists for the new Nintendo Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen. Those Switch editions link with Pokémon HOME, but that connection does not apply to the original GBA cartridges and does not create a direct HOME route for original Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald.

At a glance: every supported route

Route Source game or software Main requirement Important limitation
Pal Park migration Original GBA Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen Compatible Nintendo DS hardware with a GBA slot and a Generation IV game; Platinum specifically requires the National Pokédex One way out of the GBA cartridge; six Pokémon per Game Pak every 24 hours
Generation IV onward Pokémon already moved into Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver Compatible Generation V transfer functionality, followed by Pokémon Bank and Pokémon HOME where supported Each generation and service has its own eligibility rules
Bank to HOME Eligible Nintendo 3DS Pokémon titles stored in Pokémon Bank Pokémon HOME Premium Plan under the cited support guidance After transfer, a Pokémon cannot be moved back to Bank
Switch FireRed/LeafGreen connection New Nintendo Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen Pokémon HOME connection Pokémon can travel onward to eligible games, but Pokémon from other games cannot visit these editions

The original cartridge route is therefore not a matter of inserting a GBA game into HOME. It is a sequence of transfers through compatible generations and software.

Which original GBA games work with Pal Park?

Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum Version instruction manual explicitly names five source cartridges:

#1 Best Overall
Sale
Nintendo DS Lite Console Handheld System Black (Renewed)
  • The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
  • Pokémon Ruby Version
  • Pokémon Sapphire Version
  • Pokémon Emerald Version
  • Pokémon FireRed Version
  • Pokémon LeafGreen Version

Those are the original Game Boy Advance releases, not later ports or Switch editions. The manual describes placing the GBA Game Pak in a Nintendo DS system while the Platinum Game Card is also inserted, choosing “Migrate From” on Platinum’s start menu, and then catching the migrated Pokémon in Pal Park. Read the complete procedure and restrictions in Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum manual.

Which Generation IV games have Pal Park?

Pal Park is the Generation IV receiving feature associated with Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. The directly cited manual in this guide is for Platinum, so it is the clearest primary documentation for the source cartridges and operating limits. The other four Generation IV games are commonly identified with Pal Park migration, but their exact menu wording and unlock instructions are not established by that Platinum manual.

Generation IV game How to interpret the evidence
Pokémon Platinum Directly documented: the manual names all five GBA source games, requires the National Pokédex, and explains Pal Park migration.
Pokémon Diamond Commonly identified as a Pal Park receiving game. Confirm that the cartridge and hardware meet that title’s own requirements.
Pokémon Pearl Commonly identified as a Pal Park receiving game. Confirm that the cartridge and hardware meet that title’s own requirements.
Pokémon HeartGold Commonly identified as a Pal Park receiving game. Confirm that the cartridge and hardware meet that title’s own requirements.
Pokémon SoulSilver Commonly identified as a Pal Park receiving game. Confirm that the cartridge and hardware meet that title’s own requirements.

If you want the procedure with the clearest cited documentation, Platinum is the safest reference point. Do not assume that a modern system with backward-compatible software can substitute for a DS with a physical GBA slot.

How to migrate Pokémon from a GBA cartridge to Pal Park

  1. Prepare a compatible system. Use a Nintendo DS system that has a GBA Game Pak slot. The cited manual specifies a Nintendo DS system with the GBA cartridge inserted; it does not identify one particular retail model. When buying used hardware, verify that the slot reads cartridges reliably. A system without the required slot cannot perform this migration.
  2. Unlock the receiving game. In Platinum, obtain the National Pokédex before attempting migration. The manual’s requirement applies to the Platinum procedure; do not treat it as a universal statement about every Generation IV title without checking that game’s instructions.
  3. Insert both cartridges. Turn the DS off, insert the original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen Game Pak in the GBA slot, and insert the Generation IV Game Card in the DS game-card slot.
  4. Choose the migration command. Start the Generation IV game and select “Migrate From” on the start menu. Choose the GBA cartridge and select the Pokémon you want to send.
  5. Check eligibility before confirming. The Platinum manual excludes Pokémon holding Mail or knowing a hidden move. Remove those conditions in the GBA game first; otherwise the Pokémon cannot be selected for migration.
  6. Catch the Pokémon in Pal Park. Migration is not complete when you select the Pokémon. Travel to Pal Park in the receiving game and catch every Pokémon in that group. You must finish catching the six transferred Pokémon before starting another migration group.
  7. Wait for the next allowance. The manual limits migration to six Pokémon per Game Pak in a 24-hour period. The allowance is tied to each GBA Game Pak, so selecting fewer than six does not let you send another group immediately.

After the Pal Park catch sequence, the Pokémon exist in the Generation IV save rather than on the GBA cartridge. The manual’s warning is explicit: “Please be careful. Once migrated, Pokémon will never be able to go back to their original GBA Pokémon series Game Pak.”

What happens after Generation IV?

Pal Park is only the first leg if your destination is Pokémon HOME. The established legacy chain moves Pokémon from a compatible Generation IV game through Generation V transfer functionality, then into Pokémon Bank, and finally from Bank to HOME when the relevant services and titles are available. The exact Generation V transfer screens and restrictions vary by game, so use the instructions for the specific receiving titles rather than assuming every Pokémon can be selected.

Moving from Pokémon Bank to HOME

Pokémon Support states that eligible Pokémon from Nintendo 3DS titles stored in Pokémon Bank can be moved to Pokémon HOME. Its guidance requires a paid Pokémon HOME Premium Plan for the Bank transfer and says that a Pokémon cannot be moved back to Bank afterward. See Pokémon Support’s Bank-to-HOME instructions.

Service availability is volatile. Nintendo and Pokémon have published a notice that Bank-to-HOME transfers will cease, but the precise shutdown date is not established in the cited material. Check the current official Bank notice before relying on this route, especially if your Pokémon are still on a 3DS title.

Does Pokémon HOME connect directly to original GBA cartridges?

No. Original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen cartridges do not plug into Pokémon HOME. Their documented path begins with Pal Park on compatible Generation IV hardware. There is no cited direct HOME connection for the original GBA releases, and the newer FireRed/LeafGreen announcement does not change that.

The separate Switch FireRed and LeafGreen route

In October 2026, The Pokémon Company announced that the new Nintendo Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen link with Pokémon HOME. Pokémon from those Switch editions can travel onward to other eligible series games through HOME. The announcement also says that Pokémon from other games cannot visit the Switch FireRed or LeafGreen editions.

These are different products from the original GBA cartridges. The Switch connection does not make a physical GBA Game Pak readable by HOME, and it does not establish a Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald cartridge route. Read the October 2026 announcement and the current connection notice for the editions covered.

Why a Pokémon in HOME may not enter every game

HOME storage is not universal compatibility. A Pokémon can move only to connected games in which that Pokémon is present and for which its history and data are eligible. A game may appear as connected to HOME while still rejecting a particular Pokémon.

  1. Open the Pokémon in the HOME box.
  2. Open its details screen.
  3. Choose “Games it can travel to.”
  4. Use that individual list as the decision point before attempting a move.

Nintendo’s general Pokémon HOME FAQ explains that destination compatibility depends on the Pokémon, while Pokémon Support’s eligibility instructions identify the “Games it can travel to” check.

Common problems and the correct fix

“Migrate From” is missing

Confirm that the receiving game is a Generation IV title with the required migration feature, that the GBA cartridge is fully inserted, and that the Platinum save has the National Pokédex if you are following the Platinum procedure. A DS model without a GBA slot cannot read the source cartridge.

A selected Pokémon is rejected

Check whether it is holding Mail or knows a hidden move. The Platinum manual specifically excludes both categories. Change the Pokémon in the GBA game, save, and try the migration again.

The next group cannot be selected

Finish catching all six Pokémon from the current Pal Park group. Then observe the 24-hour limit for that Game Pak. Starting a new group before completing the Pal Park catch sequence is not supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pokémon is gone from the GBA game

That is expected behavior, not a failed transfer. Pal Park migration is one way. Make a final selection before confirming and keep a backup plan for any Pokémon you are unwilling to remove from the original cartridge.

HOME shows no destination game

Do not infer eligibility from the HOME connection alone. Open the Pokémon’s details and inspect “Games it can travel to.” Species availability, moves, forms, and the Pokémon’s transfer history can affect the result.

Choosing the right route

  • You have an original GBA cartridge and want its Pokémon in a newer game: plan the Pal Park route first, including a DS with a verified GBA slot and a compatible Generation IV cartridge.
  • You already moved the Pokémon into a 3DS title: the remaining legacy route may involve Pokémon Bank and a Premium HOME transfer, subject to current service availability.
  • You own a Switch FireRed or LeafGreen release: use its HOME connection; do not purchase DS/GBA hardware solely for that Switch edition.
  • You are protecting a personal collection: treat every migration as permanent and verify the destination list in HOME before moving a Pokémon onward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an original Pokémon Emerald cartridge connect straight to Pokémon HOME?

No. The documented route starts with Pal Park in a compatible Generation IV game, followed by later generation and service transfers where supported.

How many Pokémon can Pal Park migrate at once?

The Pokémon Platinum manual allows six Pokémon per GBA Game Pak every 24 hours, and all six must be caught in Pal Park before another group is migrated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Pokémon moved through Pal Park return to its GBA cartridge?

No. The Platinum manual states that migrated Pokémon can never return to their original GBA Game Pak.

Are Switch FireRed and LeafGreen the same as the GBA games for transfer purposes?

No. The Switch releases have their own HOME connection announced in October 2026; that connectivity does not apply to the original GBA cartridges.
