Use the BIOS that matches your game region: scph5501.bin for U.S./Canadian games, scph5502.bin for European/Australian PAL games, and scph5500.bin for Japanese games. If you play games from multiple regions, install all three and enable automatic region detection.
The best choice also depends on the emulator. DuckStation, SwanStation, Beetle PSX, and PCSX ReARMed do not handle BIOS files identically.

Quick recommendation by emulator
| Emulator or core | Recommended choice |
|---|---|
| DuckStation | Use a genuine BIOS matching the game region. Start with scph5501.bin for a primarily U.S. library; keep all three regional files for mixed libraries. |
| SwanStation | Use the matching regional BIOS, preferably scph5500.bin, scph5501.bin, and scph5502.bin together. OpenBIOS can be used as a fallback. |
| Beetle PSX / Beetle PSX HW | Use the regional BIOS files. Supported replacement files require the core’s Override BIOS option. |
| PCSX ReARMed | PSXONPSP660.bin is listed first in the core’s preference order, but a verified retail BIOS is strongly preferable to the built-in HLE BIOS. |
Do not treat scph5501.bin or PSXONPSP660.bin as universally “the best” BIOS. They are useful choices in particular emulator and region combinations, not guaranteed winners for every game.
What the PS1 BIOS does
A BIOS is the PlayStation’s system firmware. It initializes the console, handles the startup screen, performs region-related checks, and provides system functions used by games and memory cards. Some emulators can replace the original firmware with OpenBIOS or a high-level emulation (HLE) implementation, but those alternatives are core-specific and may not behave identically to a genuine Sony BIOS.

Standard regional BIOS files
| Filename | Region | MD5 |
|---|---|---|
scph5500.bin |
Japan / NTSC-J | 8dd7d5296a650fac7319bce665a6a53c |
scph5501.bin |
United States and Canada / NTSC-U | 490f666e1afb15b7362b406ed1cea246 |
scph5502.bin |
Europe and Australia / PAL | 32736f17079d0b2b7024407c39bd3050 |
These filenames and hashes are documented in Libretro’s Beetle PSX documentation. A filename alone does not prove that a BIOS is correct: files can be renamed, modified, or corrupted. Verify the MD5 hash whenever possible.
The 550x family is a widely supported retail PlayStation BIOS family. The final digit generally identifies the market—0 for Japan, 1 for North America, and 2 for Europe/PAL. A different retail revision is not automatically faster, more accurate, or more compatible with every title.
Choose by game region
- North American release:
scph5501.bin - European or Australian PAL release:
scph5502.bin - Japanese release:
scph5500.bin
For a mixed library, keep all three files with their expected names and leave the emulator on automatic region detection. A mismatched BIOS may still boot some games, but region checks or title-specific behavior can cause failures.
DuckStation
Standalone DuckStation currently requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image. Its documentation says images from different hardware versions and regions can be used, while warning that a mismatch between the BIOS and game region may cause compatibility problems. For a U.S.-focused library, a verified scph5501.bin is a sensible starting point; add scph5500.bin and scph5502.bin for imports and PAL games.
To install it:
- Open DuckStation.
- Select Tools → Open Data Directory.
- Open or create the
biosfolder. - Copy your legally obtained BIOS file or files into it.
- Restart DuckStation if the files are not detected.
- Use automatic region selection unless you are troubleshooting a specific game.
Current documented default locations are:
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%DuckStationbios - Linux:
~/.local/share/duckstation/bios - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/DuckStation/bios
Older installations may use a DocumentsDuckStation directory, which is why the Open Data Directory command is the safest method. See the DuckStation documentation for current directory and setup details.

SwanStation in RetroArch
SwanStation’s project README says an external BIOS is optional because OpenBIOS can be used when no image is supplied. However, Libretro’s general BIOS guide currently marks SwanStation as requiring a BIOS, so the documentation is inconsistent. In practice, use a genuine BIOS dump for the most predictable compatibility even when the core can fall back to OpenBIOS.
In RetroArch:
- Open Settings → Directory → System/BIOS and note the configured directory.
- Place
scph5500.bin,scph5501.bin, and/orscph5502.bindirectly in that directory. - Restart RetroArch or reload the core.
- Set the console region to Auto-Detect unless a particular title requires manual selection.
The configured directory varies by operating system, package, and frontend, so do not assume that every RetroArch installation uses the same path. The Libretro BIOS guide explains the general arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Beetle PSX and Beetle PSX HW
Use scph5500.bin for Japanese games, scph5501.bin for U.S. games, and scph5502.bin for European or Australian games. These files belong in RetroArch’s configured system directory.
Beetle PSX also documents region-free replacement options:
PSXONPSP660.bin— documented MD5:c53ca5908936d412331790f4426c6c33ps1_rom.bin— documented MD5:81bbe60ba7a3d1cea1d48c14cbcc647bopenbios.bin— an OpenBIOS replacement
These replacements are recognized only when Override BIOS is enabled, according to the Beetle PSX documentation. They are convenience or fallback choices, not proven universal improvements over a genuine regional BIOS.

Beetle PSX also requires a valid cue sheet for disc images. A BIOS can be correctly installed while a malformed .cue file or incomplete multi-track dump still prevents a game from booting.
PCSX ReARMed
PCSX ReARMed documents this BIOS preference order:
PSXONPSP660.binscph101.binscph7001.binscph5501.binscph1001.bin
If those files are absent, the core searches for other filenames beginning with scph. Its documentation says the region and version generally do not matter if the file is a retail PS1 or PS one BIOS, but recommends a valid BIOS because the built-in HLE fallback has lower compatibility. Reported problem areas include memory-card issues in some Suikoden games and black screens in some titles.
Use PSXONPSP660.bin if you already have a legitimate extraction that the core recognizes. Otherwise, use a verified retail dump; scph5501.bin is a reasonable NTSC-U choice.
Verify a BIOS with MD5
Run the command from the folder containing the file and compare the output with the documented hash—not just the filename.
Windows PowerShell:
Get-FileHash .scph5501.bin -Algorithm MD5
Windows Command Prompt:
certutil -hashfile scph5501.bin MD5
Linux:
md5sum scph5501.bin
macOS:
md5 scph5501.bin
If the hash fails, treat the file as unverified. Redump the firmware from hardware you own rather than relying on a renamed or modified download.

Troubleshooting
“No BIOS image found”
- Confirm that the file is in DuckStation’s actual
biosfolder or RetroArch’s configured System/BIOS directory. - Extract it from any ZIP archive.
- Check for an accidental extension such as
.bin.bin. - Use the filename required by the emulator or core.
- Check the file’s size and MD5 hash.
- Restart the emulator or reload the core.
The BIOS is detected, but the game will not boot
Try the BIOS matching the disc region and disable fast boot. Then check the disc image independently: verify the .cue file, audio tracks, multi-track layout, and overall dump integrity. PAL games using LibCrypt may also require an .sbi file beside the disc image, with the same base filename. SwanStation documents this requirement in its README.
A PAL game says “Please insert PlayStation CD-ROM”
This commonly indicates a region-check failure. Use the matching PAL BIOS or automatic region detection. Disabling the region check may help in some configurations, but it is not a universal fix; games that expect region-specific BIOS behavior can still fail.
Games fail after enabling fast boot
Fast boot skips the normal BIOS startup sequence and is separate from BIOS installation. Turn it off while troubleshooting. Some games can break when fast boot is enabled.
The filename looks right but the hash is wrong
Do not trust the file. It may be a different revision, modified image, corrupt dump, or incorrectly renamed BIOS. Obtain a clean dump from a console you own, subject to the law where you live.
