Which PS5 Privacy and Accessibility Settings Should You Change? A Practical Guide

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most useful PS5 changes are account privacy controls and accessibility options tailored to how you play. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy to choose a privacy preset, then inspect individual visibility, invitation and messaging controls. Open Settings > Accessibility to adjust text, contrast, zoom, screen reading, captions, chat, audio and controller behavior. Parents and guardians should also review Family and Parental Controls for child accounts. Feature availability depends on language, content, supported games and account type.

Start with the two settings areas

Privacy and accessibility solve different problems, so review them separately. Privacy determines who can find you, view your activity, send requests or contact you. Accessibility changes how the console presents information and accepts input.

Privacy changes are linked to your PlayStation account rather than one particular console, so the result follows you across devices. Accessibility choices are made on the console you configure. Sony’s current instructions are in the privacy settings guide and the PS5 accessibility guide.

Privacy: choose a baseline, then customize it

Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. You can select a preset profile or choose the option to view and customize specific privacy settings. A preset is a starting point; it is not a permanent all-or-nothing choice.

What each privacy preset allows

Preset Sony’s stated behavior Best fit
Social and Open Open to all requests and messages; any player can see profile information. Players who want maximum discoverability and broad social contact.
Team Player Most profile information is visible to any player, but chat invitations require at least a friends-of-friends connection. Players who play cooperatively but want fewer completely unsolicited chat invitations.
Friend Focused Only friends can see profile information and invite the player. Players who want social play limited largely to an established circle.
Solo and Focused No player can see profile information or invite the player, including friends. Players who want the smallest possible social footprint.

Choose the profile that matches your tolerance for discovery, then inspect the individual controls below. For many adults, Friend Focused is a sensible privacy-first starting point, while people who regularly meet new teammates may prefer Team Player or a customized mix.

Identity and profile visibility

Check who can see your real name and profile picture in search results, games and friend suggestions. Also review who can see your friends list and other profile information. These settings matter even if you rarely send messages: a visible identity can make your account easier to recognize outside your immediate friend list.

Activity and presence

Review who can see your online status, current game and gaming history. If you do not want every contact to know when you are playing or what you have been playing, narrow those audiences. You can also hide selected games rather than concealing your entire history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requests, invitations and communication

Decide who may ask to be your friend and who may interact with you through parties, games and messages. If random party invitations are the main nuisance, you can restrict those interactions without necessarily hiding every part of your profile. Check the crossplay invitation option as well, because players on other platforms may otherwise be able to invite you through a supported game.

Blocking and account-linked behavior

Use the blocked-players list to review people you no longer want to contact you. Privacy changes apply to the account, so changing them on one PS5 is reflected on other devices signed in to that account. For child family members, a family manager, parent or guardian may control profile settings depending on the family’s parental-control configuration. PlayStation Stars visibility options are limited to supported regions and are unavailable on child accounts.

Change privacy in a deliberate sequence

  1. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
  2. Select a preset that is closest to your preferred level of openness.
  3. Choose the option to view and customize individual privacy settings.
  4. Set real-name, profile, friends-list, online-status, current-game and gaming-history visibility.
  5. Set who can send friend requests and who can contact you in parties, games and messages.
  6. Review blocked players and crossplay game invitations.
  7. Recheck the account on another signed-in device if you manage several consoles; the privacy result should follow the account.

Accessibility: change the feature that removes your specific barrier

Open Settings > Accessibility. The menu includes display and text controls, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, zoom, mono audio, controller settings, haptic feedback and an option to enlarge the display area. You can add accessibility controls to the Control Centre for quicker access. A game’s own options can be checked from its PlayStation Store game hub; a title may offer more or fewer features than the console itself.

Text size, contrast, color and motion

Under Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound, adjust the presentation to suit your eyesight or motion sensitivity. Available controls include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Text size and bold text for easier reading.
  • High contrast and color correction for clearer separation between interface elements.
  • Color inversion when a reversed palette is more legible.
  • Check marks on enabled settings so active options are easier to identify.
  • Auto-scroll speed for text that moves automatically.
  • Reduce motion for less animation in the interface.
  • Enlarge display area when important content is difficult to see at the normal scale.

Enabling Invert Colours turns HDR off. If HDR is important for your display, try text size, bold text, contrast or color correction first and use inversion only when its readability benefit outweighs the loss of HDR.

Zoom for a temporary close look

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. After enabling it, the PS5 lets you invoke zoom with the PS button and Square button. Zoom is useful for reading a small label or menu without permanently enlarging every element.

Screen reader for spoken console guidance

Sony describes the screen reader as reading on-screen text and providing spoken guidance for operating the console. Adjust its speech speed, voice type and volume to make navigation comfortable.

The spoken language follows the console language. Sony lists Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. If your preferred language is not in that list, the screen reader will not provide speech in it; changing the console language changes the reader’s language as well.

Closed captions for supported video and audio

Enable captions at Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions > Display Closed Captions. Captions can show spoken dialogue and audio cues while viewing supported content. The content itself determines whether captions are available.

Use the caption-style controls to tune font size, text color, edge style, text opacity, background color and opacity, and window color and opacity. A high-contrast combination can be more useful than simply choosing the largest font, especially when a game or video places text over a busy image.

Chat transcription in parties and supported games

Chat transcription provides speech-to-text and text-to-speech in party voice chat and in games that support the feature. Text you enter can be read aloud to other players, and spoken chat can be converted to text for you. Sony lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish for chat transcription.

Use this when hearing speech is difficult, when speaking is difficult, or when you need a written record of fast voice conversation. In a game, the title must support transcription; the console setting cannot add the feature to an unsupported game.

Mono audio for headphones

Mono audio sends the same sound to both the left and right sides of connected headphones. Sony’s Canadian instructions place it at Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Headphones > Mono Audio for Headphones. Menu wording can differ by system version or region, so follow the equivalent current labels on your console.

Mono is useful when you hear primarily with one ear or need identical information in both channels. It is different from increasing volume: it changes channel distribution so sounds are not lost in the weaker side.

Controller assignments and haptic feedback

Use the controller settings area to create custom button assignments for the DualSense. Remapping can reduce awkward reaches or replace a control that is difficult to press. The accessibility menu also includes haptic-feedback options for console navigation.

Haptic feedback during navigation requires a selected vibration intensity and a supported PlayStation controller. Sony specifies DualSense, DualSense Edge and PS VR2 Sense controllers for that navigation setting. If you need a different physical control arrangement, Sony’s accessibility guide links to information about the optional PlayStation Access controller. You do not need additional hardware to change the PS5’s built-in settings.

Child accounts need a separate privacy review

For a child account, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, or use the PlayStation Family app. A family manager, parent or guardian can manage the child’s privacy settings and decide which settings the child is allowed to change. Sony says the parent or guardian is notified when these settings are changed.

Restrict communication and user-generated content

The Communication and User-Generated Content control can disable text messaging and voice chat, stop a child from sharing their own user-generated content, prevent viewing other players’ user-generated content, and block links to selected third-party communication services. These restrictions address both direct contact and exposure to material uploaded by other players.

A child can request an exception for communication features in a specific game. Treat each request as a title-specific decision rather than broadly removing the family rule.

Choose settings by the problem you are solving

Your priority Privacy choice Accessibility choice
Meet new teammates but reduce random contact Start with Team Player; narrow messages or party invitations if needed. Use chat transcription if voice chat is hard to hear or speak.
Keep your activity mostly private Friend Focused, or customize profile, status and history visibility separately. Choose display options independently; privacy and accessibility do not require the same preset.
Avoid nearly all social discovery Solo and Focused, with blocked-player and crossplay-invitation controls checked. Use screen reader, captions, zoom or controller remapping without changing social access.
Make small interface text readable Any privacy preset; privacy does not enlarge text. Increase text size or bold text, then try contrast, zoom or display-area enlargement.
Support a child’s safer play Use Family Management to control privacy and communication. Configure the console features the child needs, while keeping game-specific accessibility options in each title.

Limits to check when a setting appears not to work

  • A feature is missing in a game: check that game’s PlayStation Store game hub; console-level accessibility does not guarantee equivalent in-game support.
  • Captions do not appear: confirm Display Closed Captions is enabled and that the video or game provides caption support.
  • Chat transcription does not activate: verify that the game supports it and that the console language is one of Sony’s listed transcription languages.
  • The screen reader speaks an unexpected language: check the console language, because screen-reader speech follows it.
  • HDR disappeared after a visual change: check whether Invert Colours is enabled; Sony states that inversion turns HDR off.
  • Mono audio is hard to find: look under the sound and headphone output menus, noting that labels can vary by region or system version.
  • A child cannot change a privacy option: review the family manager’s permissions and parental-control rules; child settings may intentionally be locked.

Review privacy after major account or family changes, and revisit accessibility whenever your display, controller, headphones, language or games change. The best setup is the one that exposes only the social information you intend to share while removing the particular reading, hearing, movement or input barrier affecting your play.
