No Resident Evil game is identified as set in Tokyo. The Tokyo association most likely comes from Resident Evil: Retribution, which is a film, not a game. Capcom’s franchise history describes Alice arriving in Tokyo before she is transported to Moscow and New York in that movie’s storyline.

Why the Tokyo answer is “none” for games

The evidence supports a narrow claim: no Resident Evil video game is identified as set in Tokyo. That is not the same as saying no future title could be. Capcom’s official franchise history covers both games and adaptations, and its description of the Tokyo sequence belongs to the film.

The Tokyo sequence belongs to a film

Capcom’s official franchise history lists Resident Evil: Retribution as a film and says Alice finds herself in Tokyo before being transported to Moscow and New York. If you remember a Tokyo setting from the series, this is the most likely source. Keeping the medium straight matters here, because a film’s location should not be credited to a game.

Where the recent games are set

Capcom’s 2025 integrated report places Resident Evil Requiem in Raccoon City, the fictional Midwestern U.S. city that anchors much of the series. The same report’s historical timeline also places earlier entries in different locations, including Resident Evil 5 in Africa. The report is a franchise overview, not a complete index of every game’s setting, so use it as the reference for those specific titles rather than for an exhaustive list.

What the producer said about Japan

In a 2026 report, GamesRadar+ quoted Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa, from an interview with the Japanese publication Futabanet (translated by Automaton): “While Japan hasn’t appeared as a game setting so far, it might make an appearance at some point in the future.” This is a reported interview quotation, not an official announcement of a Japan- or Tokyo-set game. Note that the remark concerns Japan as a whole, not Tokyo specifically.

Games and adaptations are different categories

Capcom describes Resident Evil as a survival horror game series and separately notes movies and CG animations as adaptations. Most Tokyo-related confusion comes from treating those adaptations as if they were games. When you search for a setting, check the medium first.

Pneumata - PlayStation 5
  • Cosmic horror that makes you question what's real and what's not; the line between reality and alternate worlds begins to blur.
  • True survival horror: scavenge for weapons and supplies in limited quantities and run/hide to survive by any means necessary.
  • Examine crime scenes and piece together clues and evidence in order to solve a series of gruesome murders.
  • Explore a realistic and gritty apartment building and discover hidden areas and pathways in your search for the truth. Diverse AI: fight or hide against entities that are unpredictable and use your environment to create distractions.
  • Gruesome horror around every corner and an unending feeling of tension and helplessness as you explore deeper into the complex.

Suggested wording

If you need to explain this to someone else, the accurate version is: “No Resident Evil game is identified as set in Tokyo. You may be thinking of Resident Evil: Retribution, the film, which has a Tokyo sequence.” If you want to include the producer’s comment, add that in 2026 Masato Kumazawa said Japan had not appeared as a game setting so far, while leaving open a future game.

Franchise scale

Capcom reports more than 170 million units sold across the franchise as of March 31, 2025. That figure covers the whole series and says nothing about Tokyo-set titles.
