Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Skyrim NPC AI mods, “smoothly” means two different things: NPCs must follow their schedules without getting stuck or colliding with objects, and the game must maintain acceptable frame rates. The safest approach is to identify the exact mod and version, avoid changing engine AI settings casually, and build load order around documented compatibility patches rather than a universal “put it last” rule.
AI Overhaul and Immersive Citizens solve the problem differently. AI Overhaul’s full version changes NPC data, packages and idle markers; its Lite version removes direct NPC edits and extra markers in favor of an AI quest and is described by its author as more compatible. Immersive Citizens relies heavily on the city, interior, furniture-marker and navigation layouts represented by other plugins. A load order can arrange compatible records, but it cannot make a genuinely incompatible layout work.

Start with the exact Skyrim edition, mod and version
Before changing a setting, record whether the installation is Skyrim Special Edition, an Anniversary Edition installation running the Special Edition executable, or another edition, then note the exact release of every AI mod, city overhaul, interior overhaul, NPC replacer and compatibility patch. Instructions written for one edition or version are not automatically valid for another.
AI Overhaul’s main file and Lite file are separate designs, not two performance presets. Immersive Citizens also has its own maintained compatibility and ordering instructions. Read the author documentation for the release actually installed and check whether the author requires a new game, a clean save, or a particular installation sequence; those requirements can change between versions.

If Skyrim Special Edition is not already owned, it is the required game base for the Special Edition versions discussed here. The behavior fixes themselves come from plugin configuration and compatibility work, not from buying faster peripherals or unrelated hardware.
Understand what AI Overhaul changes
Full AI Overhaul versus AI Overhaul Lite
| Version | NPC and world changes | How behavior is delivered | Compatibility implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Overhaul main | Edits NPC AI data and packages and adds idle markers. | Behavior is represented through those edited records and added markers. | More records and physical markers can overlap with city, interior, NPC and marker edits from other plugins. |
| AI Overhaul Lite | Avoids direct NPC edits and does not add the extra markers used by the main version. | Uses an AI quest to apply its behavior layer. | The author describes it as more compatible, but that is not a guarantee for every load order. |
Choose the main version when its broader schedule and behavior changes are the priority and you can verify patches for the rest of the list. Choose Lite when reducing direct record and marker conflicts matters more. “More compatible” describes the author’s design goal; it does not mean Lite will automatically coexist with every city overhaul or NPC replacer.

AI Overhaul’s listed game-setting values
The AI Overhaul SSE page lists the following changes for version 1.9 and later:
| Setting | Listed value | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
fAIInDialogueModeWithPlayerDistance |
240 | A value changed by the mod. |
fAIDialogueDistance |
120 | A value changed by the mod. |
fAIBestHeadTrackDistance |
400 | A value changed by the mod. |
fAIMaxHeadTrackDistance |
200 | A value changed by the mod. |
iAINumberActorsComplexScene |
30 | A value changed by the mod, not a frame-rate benchmark. |
Do not copy these numbers into a global configuration file merely because they appear on the mod page. They document what AI Overhaul changes. Stacking another “AI tweak” that edits the same values can make the final behavior depend on plugin or configuration-file precedence rather than on either author’s intended setup. If another mod advertises changes to these settings, compare both authors’ documentation and keep only a deliberately chosen set.

Immersive Citizens: protect its sandbox and world layout
Do not casually change the sandbox-cylinder defaults
The Immersive Citizens author specifically advises against plugins that alter fSandboxCylinderTop or fSandboxCylinderBottom. The stated risks are NPCs remaining inactive for a long time and the game engine failing to load some NPCs. A larger sandbox is therefore not a general-purpose fix for an NPC who will not walk to a destination. Restore the defaults or remove the conflicting tweak before investigating more invasive changes.
Why layouts and navigation meshes matter
Immersive Citizens packages expect the physical world represented by the plugin to match the locations where an NPC can stand, sit, work or travel. The author identifies several direct conflict mechanisms:
- City or interior plugins can move, remove or replace rooms and paths that an AI package expects.
- Removing or moving idle and furniture markers can leave an NPC with no valid destination or send the NPC to an unintended position.
- Navigation-mesh edits can make a route invalid, trap an actor, or direct the actor into collision with scenery.
These are data conflicts, not graphics settings. If an NPC repeatedly stands still, clips into furniture, walks into a wall or fails to reach a new room, inspect layout, marker and navigation changes and look for a patch for the exact mod versions. Moving Immersive Citizens higher or lower may determine which record wins, but it cannot recreate a marker or rebuild a navigation mesh that another plugin removed.

Performance claim and its limits
In its FAQ, the Immersive Citizens author answers the performance question: “No, no significant performances impact (around 1%).” Treat “around 1%” as an author-reported estimate, not an independent benchmark. The published material does not provide a test methodology or a representative set of hardware and load orders, so it cannot promise the same result on every installation. There is no independent frame-rate figure established here for either Immersive Citizens or AI Overhaul.

Build a documented load order instead of using a universal position
The Immersive Citizens author suggests placing the plugin near the bottom of the load order, but the same instructions list specific plugins that must be above or below it. Compatibility patches can add further constraints. Therefore, “put it last” is no safer than “put it near the top” when the actual exception points the other way.
- List every related plugin. Include the AI mod, city and interior overhauls, NPC replacers, marker or navigation edits, gameplay overhauls and every compatibility patch. Record exact names and versions.
- Read the AI mod’s current compatibility page. Follow its named exceptions for each installed city, interior, NPC and patch plugin. Do not infer an order for an unlisted combination.
- Apply the required relative order. If the documentation says a plugin must be above Immersive Citizens, place it above; if it says below, place it below. Keep the rule attached to the specific plugin rather than treating it as a general ranking.
- Install only matching patches. A patch is appropriate only when every mod and version it supports is present. A Bethesda listing gives one concrete example: Immersive Citizens → MorrowLoot Ultimate → compatibility patch. That sequence applies to that patch, not to unrelated patches.
- Recheck after every change. Adding a city overhaul or replacing an interior can invalidate an earlier order. Re-read both the AI mod’s instructions and the new plugin’s compatibility notes before loading a save.
- Test in a controlled area. Visit the affected town or interior, allow the relevant NPC schedules to run, and check navigation, idle markers and interactions before adding another mod. Change one variable at a time so a new conflict remains identifiable.
Load-order tools can sort according to their rules, but an automatic sort cannot know that a particular patch requires a named exception unless that rule is encoded correctly. Treat the author’s documented order as authoritative for that mod and verify the final sequence manually.
Choose between AI Overhaul, Lite and Immersive Citizens by conflict risk
| Question | AI Overhaul main | AI Overhaul Lite | Immersive Citizens |
|---|---|---|---|
| How extensive are the direct edits? | Edits NPC AI data and packages; adds idle markers. | Avoids direct NPC edits and extra markers. | Depends on its behavior packages and the world layouts those packages target. |
| What is the likely conflict surface? | NPC records, packages, markers, city and interior changes. | Fewer direct NPC and marker overlaps, though compatibility is not guaranteed. | City/interior layouts, furniture and idle markers, and navigation meshes. |
| When is it a sensible fit? | You want the broader behavior scope and can support it with exact patches. | You want a lighter behavior layer in a heavily edited load order. | You are prepared to follow its per-plugin compatibility and ordering rules. |
| Is one universally best? | No. The sources do not establish a winner for every platform, edition or load order. | ||
A community question sometimes frames the choice as “What is better? Immersive Citizens – AI Overhaul SE or Relationship Dialogue Overhaul + Run for your lives?” That wording reflects one player’s comparison, not a consensus or a current compatibility result. Decide by the behavior you want, the exact versions installed, and whether a maintained patch exists for the rest of your list.

Troubleshoot NPC behavior before chasing frame rate
NPCs are idle or stop acting
- Check whether a plugin changed or removed the NPC’s expected idle or furniture marker.
- Check for a city or interior layout conflict and verify an exact compatibility patch.
- Remove any plugin that changes
fSandboxCylinderToporfSandboxCylinderBottombefore trying other adjustments. - Confirm that the final plugin order follows the AI mod’s documented exceptions.
NPCs collide with objects or choose impossible routes
- Look for navigation-mesh edits in the same cell or town.
- Compare the physical layout with the package’s intended markers and destinations.
- Do not assume a lower plugin position repairs a missing navmesh connection; the conflicting layout needs a compatible patch or removal.
Some NPCs do not load
First undo sandbox-cylinder changes, because the Immersive Citizens author warns that those edits can prevent some NPCs from loading. Then verify that the AI plugin and its patches match the installed Skyrim edition and mod versions. Test from a controlled save after correcting the order; do not pile additional AI tweaks onto an unverified installation.
The game feels slower
Separate a genuine frame-rate problem from delayed or incorrect schedules. Check whether the symptom occurs in a location with many active actors, and test after resolving layout and load-order conflicts. The only numerical performance statement in the cited material is Immersive Citizens’ author estimate of around 1%; it is not a target you can use to predict your own frame rate. AI Overhaul’s iAINumberActorsComplexScene = 30 entry is a setting value, not evidence that the game will render 30 actors at a particular frame rate.
