The safest method is to install one NPC-AI overhaul at a time through a mod manager, match its file to your Skyrim edition and runtime, install only patches that support your actual plugin list, then sort and test before changing anything else. Back up your saves and mod configuration first: neither AI Overhaul SSE nor Immersive Citizens provides a universal guarantee that installing, updating, or removing an overhaul mid-playthrough is harmless.
AI Overhaul SSE and Immersive Citizens change overlapping parts of NPC behavior in different ways. Choose one according to the scope of its edits and the city, NPC, appearance, settlement, and gameplay mods already in your load order; do not stack both casually.

What an NPC AI overhaul changes
NPC AI mods replace or extend the packages that tell citizens where to go, what to do, how to react to danger, and which idle behaviors to use. That can make towns feel more active, but it also means the mod may touch the same NPC, cell, dialogue, scene, navmesh, or AI records edited by other plugins. A mod can be correctly installed and still need a compatibility patch because another plugin wins the same records later in the load order.

AI Overhaul SSE Lite is intended to reduce record conflicts by avoiding direct NPC edits and extra markers. That lighter approach can fit a heavily edited load order, but it also has a smaller feature scope. Immersive Citizens is a separate overhaul with its own behavior system, environment assumptions, configuration route, and compatibility rules. Similar names do not mean that a patch made for one supports the other.
AI Overhaul SSE or Immersive Citizens?
Pick one overhaul after examining the rest of your load order. The practical distinction is not which name is more popular; it is which records and locations the mod changes and whether patches exist for your particular combination.

There is no universal winner and no universal load order. Compare the scope of AI changes, direct NPC and marker edits, required masters, compatibility with settlement and appearance mods, and the availability of patches for the exact versions you intend to run.

Make a record of the game state you can return to. A safe installation is reversible because you know what was enabled before the change.
- Identify the exact game edition and runtime, such as the current Special Edition or another supported build. Do not assume a file labelled for one runtime works on another.
- Export or note your enabled plugins and their order. Include ESL-flagged files and optional patches, not only the large ESP files.
- Record the overhaul version, installer option, required masters, and every optional patch you plan to use.
- Create a separate backup of the current save and of your mod manager’s profile or load-order configuration. Keep the backup outside the manager’s staging directory.
- Read the current description, files, requirements, compatibility notes, and the readme packaged with the download. A historical guide can contain obsolete folder names or requirements.
Do not clean, merge, or convert an overhaul merely because another guide suggests it. Follow the format and instructions supplied for the exact release you downloaded.
Match the file to your Skyrim edition and runtime
Version labels and dates need context. The current Nexus listing for AI Overhaul SSE was 1.8.7, updated May 26, 2025, while the readme embedded in the package identifies itself as 1.8.5 from December 10, 2023. That discrepancy is a reason to read the file-specific documentation, not to assume that a newer number in a web listing describes every document in the archive.

Immersive Citizens’ author page includes older Skyrim and downloadable-content requirements. Compare those instructions with the active files page, the date of the file you are installing, and the game actually launched by your executable. If a requirement names a legacy edition, do not install it on a different edition until the current file explicitly supports that setup.

Install one overhaul with a mod manager
A manager makes the plugin, archive, and profile state visible and gives you a reversible way to disable a test. Vortex is one Nexus Mods option; another established manager can work if its instructions match your game. The exact button names can change between manager releases, so use the current installer prompts rather than copying folder names from an old manual guide.
- Open the profile you intend to play. Confirm that it targets the correct Skyrim edition and runtime and that your baseline plugins are enabled.
- Download the current archive from the overhaul’s official file page. Read the requirements and changelog before installing. If the archive offers main and Lite variants, decide which one you need; do not enable both unless the author explicitly says they are designed to coexist.
- Install the archive through the manager. Follow its prompts and inspect the installed file tree. Do not rename plugins or move files to an old directory name simply because a forum post uses it.
- Enable the intended plugin. Check that the main plugin, required masters, and only the selected optional files are active. An installed archive that is not enabled has no effect; an unintended variant can create conflicts you did not plan to troubleshoot.
- Add only relevant compatibility patches. Choose patches for mods that are actually in your profile, and verify that each patch names the same overhaul and compatible versions. Do not install a large collection of speculative patches.
- Deploy or apply the manager’s changes. Resolve file conflicts according to the overhaul and patch authors’ instructions. A manager’s conflict winner controls loose-file assets, while plugin load order controls records; one does not automatically solve the other.
Install the overhaul as a single controlled change. Avoid updating graphics, city layouts, follower frameworks, and AI files in the same step, because you will not know which change caused a failure.
Sort the plugin order, then read every warning
Run LOOT as a sorting aid and inspect its messages. LOOT can apply its metadata and place plugins in a sensible order, but it is not a compatibility-patch generator and cannot know every mod author’s intended record winner. Treat a warning as a task to investigate, not as permission to ignore the overhaul’s own instructions.
After sorting, open the overhaul’s compatibility documentation and the instructions for every installed patch. Immersive Citizens specifically publishes ordering rules for its main plugin, certain environment edits, and supported patches, and recommends keeping LOOT’s masterlist current. Follow those rules for the exact version you have; do not replace them with a generic order copied from another load order.

Because conflicts depend on the complete plugin list, no responsible guide can give one fixed position that works for every player.
Understand the conflicts most likely to matter
City, village, and interior changes
Immersive Citizens’ documentation identifies city, village, and interior layout edits as the principal class of plugins that can disrupt its AI. Changes to dialogue, scenes, or cell settings can also matter. A town overhaul may move doors, navmesh connections, furniture, or markers that an AI package expects. Check the compatibility list for every settlement and interior mod, not just the largest one.
NPC appearance and population edits
Appearance overhauls, follower frameworks, population additions, and marriage or faction changes can edit the same NPC records as an AI overhaul. AI Overhaul SSE’s main version directly edits NPC records, so a patch may be needed to preserve both the new appearance and the new behavior. If no patch exists, decide which record must win and test that NPC in game; do not assume that the last plugin is automatically correct.
Two AI overhauls
AI Overhaul SSE and Immersive Citizens are alternative systems, not complementary modules. Their packages, edits, and compatibility assumptions can overwrite one another or leave only half of each system active. Keep one disabled while evaluating the other. If you switch, treat the change as a new configuration and retest rather than layering the second plugin over the first.
Configure and test the installed overhaul
Configuration starts with confirming that the game is running the intended files, not with changing every available setting. Launch with the selected plugin set and use a controlled test save or a disposable new character for the first check.
- Reach the main menu without a missing-master error or immediate crash.
- Load the test save and wait in a familiar settlement long enough for routines to begin. Check several citizens at different times of day rather than judging one NPC in one cell.
- Verify that an NPC who should travel, sandbox, work, or seek shelter actually changes location or activity. Compare behavior against the overhaul’s documented scope, not against an expectation that every citizen will receive a unique schedule.
- Visit a settlement or interior covered by your major city and layout mods. Look for inaccessible doors, NPCs standing at a marker, repeated combat reactions, or scenes that fail to start.
- Trigger a controlled combat or danger event only after ordinary routines work. Observe whether citizens flee, fight, or return to schedules as the overhaul documentation describes.
- Save, exit, and reload. A setup that works only on the first load can indicate a script, order, or record conflict.
Immersive Citizens documents a configuration route through its Citizens control power that can update its data after extra NPCs are added to an existing save. Use that action only for the purpose and version documented by Immersive Citizens; it is not a general repair command for AI Overhaul SSE or other mods.

Can you install an AI overhaul on an existing save?
You can attempt it, but the available documentation does not establish a universal safety guarantee for installing, updating, or removing an NPC overhaul mid-playthrough. AI packages and records can change while an NPC is already in a schedule, scene, combat state, or scripted quest. A backup lets you return to the previous state if the new behavior or save becomes unstable.
If you must change an existing game, make the backup first, change one overhaul or version at a time, and test for several minutes in multiple cells before committing to the new save. Keep the original save untouched until you have confirmed ordinary routines, settlement interactions, quests, and reloads. Do not use a save-cleaning procedure that the mod author has not documented.
For Immersive Citizens, the documented Citizens control update action is the narrow exception for adding extra NPCs to an existing save. It does not prove that removing the overhaul, replacing it with AI Overhaul SSE, or updating an unrelated plugin is safe.

The game reports a missing master
Return to the manager’s plugin list and identify the named master. Confirm that the required edition, downloadable-content file, or dependency is installed and enabled. If the master belongs to an optional patch you do not need, disable or remove that patch instead of adding unrelated files. Launch only after the warning is gone.
The game crashes while loading the save
Restore the last known-good profile and save to confirm that the overhaul is involved. Then enable the overhaul without optional patches, sort and inspect warnings, and add compatible patches one at a time. A crash after enabling a city or interior patch points toward a record or asset conflict; a crash before the menu points first toward a missing master, incompatible runtime, or malformed installation.

NPCs stand still or repeat one action
Check whether the NPC’s cell, furniture, navmesh, or schedule was edited by another plugin. Test the same NPC in an unmodified location if possible, then consult the overhaul’s compatibility list. Do not immediately add a second AI mod; that can hide the original conflict.

NPC faces, outfits, or names change unexpectedly
Inspect the plugins that edit that NPC and determine which record wins. Install a patch that explicitly supports the overhaul and appearance mod, or choose a deliberate winner and test the result. A patch for a different AI overhaul is not interchangeable.
LOOT places a plugin differently from the author’s instructions
Read the LOOT message and the mod author’s current guidance together. LOOT’s metadata is useful for sorting, but mod-specific compatibility instructions take precedence when they describe a required relationship. Update LOOT’s masterlist, apply the documented order, and then verify that no new warning or missing master appears.
Updating, switching, or removing the overhaul
Plan an update like an installation, not like a texture replacement. Read the new version’s requirements and changelog, back up the profile and save, and change only that mod first. Keep the old archive available until the new version passes menu, save, routine, settlement, combat, and reload checks.

Switching from one overhaul to the other is a larger change because both may have altered overlapping records. Disable the first system, install the second with its own patches, sort according to the second author’s instructions, and test from a backup. If the old save develops persistent problems, restore the pre-switch save rather than repeatedly saving over it.
Removing an overhaul from an active save is not automatically safer than installing one. If the author does not document a removal procedure, use a backup or a new profile instead of assuming that disabling the plugin will remove every stored effect.
A repeatable safety checklist
- One overhaul selected for a clear reason; the other is not enabled.
- Edition, runtime, archive, and readme all match.
- Baseline plugin list, profile, and save are backed up.
- Required masters are present and enabled.
- Main or Lite variant is intentional and the correct plugin is active.
- Only patches for mods actually in the load order are installed.
- LOOT has been run, its messages read, and the overhaul author’s order followed.
- City, village, interior, dialogue, scene, cell, NPC, and appearance conflicts have been checked.
- The game reaches the menu, loads a test save, and shows working routines after a reload.
- Any existing-save configuration action is used only when that specific mod documents it.
Following this process cannot eliminate every conflict, because the final result depends on the complete load order and the exact files available when you install. It does make each change identifiable, reversible, and testable—the three conditions that matter most when modifying NPC behavior.
