For Steam Frame, start with SteamVR’s render resolution set to Auto and prioritize steady frame delivery over the highest refresh-rate setting. If a game stutters, lower render resolution in small steps; if the GPU still cannot keep up, try a lower refresh rate supported by the headset and game. For comfort, adjust the individual game’s movement and camera options to your tolerance—there is no established universal Steam Frame comfort preset.
Which settings should you change first?
Change one setting at a time, then retest the same scene. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped and avoids sacrificing image quality or comfort unnecessarily.
- Set a comfortable fit and image. Begin with the headset fitted comfortably and the image clear to you.
- Use SteamVR render resolution Auto as the baseline. In SteamVR, open Settings > Video > Render Resolution. Valve recommends trying Auto in its Half-Life: Alyx FAQ; this is general SteamVR guidance, not a Steam Frame-specific tested preset.
- Reduce render resolution if performance is inconsistent. Lower it a step at a time and replay the same scene. A lower resolution trades some sharpness for less rendering work. Keep the change only if it improves frame consistency enough for you.
- Consider refresh rate if the GPU remains overloaded. Try a lower mode supported by both Steam Frame and the game. Valve says lower refresh rates can reduce GPU load and mentions trying 90 Hz for Valve Index in its Half-Life: Alyx FAQ; that Index-specific advice is not a Steam Frame preset.
- Adjust comfort within the game. Look in that title’s comfort or accessibility menu for movement and camera options, then compare them in play.
How should you choose a refresh rate?
Valve lists Steam Frame refresh rates from 72 to 144 Hz and identifies 144 Hz as experimental on its Steam Frame product page. Those are device specifications, not a promise that every game or streaming setup can sustain every mode.
Valve’s separate VR Beta performance and comfort guidance recommends aiming for a consistent 90 Hz baseline and says, “A smooth and consistent framerate will be the most comfortable and enjoyable when you play.” Treat 90 Hz as general VR guidance, not a guaranteed best setting for Steam Frame. The useful comparison is steady delivery versus a higher refresh target your system cannot maintain.

Which comfort settings matter in each game?
Comfort controls are title-dependent, so check what the game actually offers rather than expecting a global Steam Frame control. If available, compare locomotion choices, snap turning, vignette, and camera-motion options by how much artificial movement they introduce and how comfortable you find them. Use the options that suit your tolerance; no single combination is established as best across games or players.
What do Steam Frame’s eye tracking and wireless features change?
Valve describes Steam Frame as a streaming-first headset with two interior eye-tracking cameras and foveated streaming. Its product page says gaze data guides higher-quality pixels toward where you are looking. This is described as part of the system, not as a user-adjustable “foveation strength” setting in the material available here.

Valve also lists an included 6 GHz wireless adapter, dual radios, and multi-link streaming as part of the headset’s wireless design. If a streamed image is unstable, the published information does not establish a specific network setting to change.
Steam Frame settings at a glance
| Control or feature | What to try or know | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| SteamVR render resolution | Start with Auto; lower it incrementally if performance is inconsistent. | Valve’s SteamVR guidance comes from the Half-Life: Alyx FAQ, not a Steam Frame-specific test. |
| Refresh rate | Choose a supported mode that allows steady frame delivery; 144 Hz is experimental. | Valve lists 72–144 Hz for Steam Frame. Actual performance depends on the game and setup. |
| Comfort and movement | Inspect each game’s comfort or accessibility settings and adjust to personal tolerance. | Options vary by game; no universal Steam Frame preset is established. |
| Foveated streaming | Valve describes gaze-guided detail as a built-in feature. | The reviewed product information does not establish a user-facing strength control. |
| Wireless streaming | Steam Frame includes a 6 GHz adapter and multi-link design. | The product information does not give a manual bitrate tuning procedure. |
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
Valve lists 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye on the Steam Frame product page. That panel specification does not mean every game will render at that resolution or maintain a particular frame rate. Valve also says some specifications may change ahead of availability, so consult the product page for current details.

Valve says foveated streaming “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” This is Valve’s product claim, not an independently verified result or a guarantee for a particular game or setup. The available official guidance does not establish a complete Steam Frame settings walkthrough, tested setting combinations, or per-game compatibility matrix.
For a clearer image without instability, keep Auto or raise resolution only while frame delivery remains consistent. When performance falters, reduce resolution first, then consider a supported lower refresh rate if the GPU is still overloaded. Make comfort changes separately in the game’s own menu.
