Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For smooth gameplay, use your monitor’s variable refresh rate (VRR)—NVIDIA G-SYNC or AMD FreeSync—if both the display and graphics card support it. With G-SYNC, NVIDIA recommends enabling V-Sync alongside Reflex or Ultra Low Latency if you want to avoid tearing, and capping frame rate slightly below the monitor’s maximum can help keep play within the VRR range. With FreeSync, enable it in both the monitor menu and AMD Software; if your frame rate regularly exceeds the display’s refresh rate, AMD recommends V-Sync or a frame cap. On a fixed-refresh display, V-Sync is a tradeoff: it removes tearing but can add latency.
Choose a starting setting for your setup
| Setup or priority | Starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA G-SYNC; you want to avoid tearing | Enable G-SYNC. NVIDIA recommends V-Sync on with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency; if needed, cap FPS slightly below the display’s maximum refresh rate. | NVIDIA says this approach has slightly higher latency than uncapped FPS with Reflex enabled. Windowed mode and control-panel configuration can affect behavior. NVIDIA’s latency guide and G-SYNC setup help explain the options. |
| AMD FreeSync; FPS usually stays within the display’s range | Enable FreeSync on the monitor and in AMD Software, then check how the game feels. | Some monitor presets can disable FreeSync. Confirm the display-side setting as well as the driver setting. AMD’s setup steps show where to check. |
| AMD FreeSync; FPS regularly exceeds the display’s refresh rate | Turn on V-Sync or use a frame cap. | AMD recommends either approach when FPS regularly exceeds refresh. Choose based on whether you value tear-free output or lower latency more; there is no universal FPS cap value established by the guidance. AMD FreeSync guidance. |
| AMD Radeon; FPS often exceeds refresh and latency matters | Consider Enhanced Sync. | AMD positions it as an alternative to traditional V-Sync for reducing tearing, latency, and stutter in its target use case. It does not support OpenGL and may cause multimedia playback problems. AMD Enhanced Sync details. |
| Fixed-refresh display; tearing is distracting | Try conventional V-Sync on. | It synchronizes output with refresh to remove tearing, but may add latency. How noticeable that feels depends on the game and player. NVIDIA describes the tradeoff. |
| Fixed-refresh display; responsiveness matters more than tearing | Try V-Sync off. | Tearing can occur when FPS exceeds refresh. This is a preference tradeoff, not a universally better setting. |
What V-Sync, VRR, and frame caps change
V-Sync synchronizes output to refresh
Traditional V-Sync coordinates the game’s output with the monitor’s refresh cycle to remove tearing. The tradeoff is possible latency: NVIDIA describes display back pressure and recommends turning V-Sync off for players willing to tolerate tearing. That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee that every player will perceive the same latency.
VRR adjusts refresh to the game
G-SYNC and FreeSync are not simply another name for V-Sync. On compatible hardware, VRR lets the display adjust its refresh rate to match the game’s frame rate, helping reduce tearing and stutter within the display’s operating range. NVIDIA says G-SYNC matches monitor refresh to GPU frame rate; AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing display refresh with compatible graphics and supports standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate. Compatibility with the display and graphics device is required. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC requirements and AMD’s FreeSync information cover the respective systems.
Some FreeSync tiers support low-framerate compensation (LFC). When FPS falls below the display’s minimum VRR rate, LFC can duplicate frames so the display continues refreshing within its range. AMD illustrates this with a 60–144 Hz display at 40 FPS: doubling the frames lets the panel run at 80 Hz. This is AMD’s example, not a guarantee for every monitor.

A frame cap limits maximum FPS
A frame cap can help keep FPS within a VRR range. NVIDIA says its Max Frame Rate control can also reduce power use or system latency in some GPU-bound situations. AMD says its Frame Rate Target Control can help avoid exceeding the maximum FreeSync range, but the cited feature applies to fullscreen DirectX 9, 10, and 11 applications and a 30–200 FPS target range. The available cap control and its limits therefore depend on the driver and game.
Set up VRR and test the game
- Set the display to its highest supported refresh rate. Use the operating system or graphics control panel. NVIDIA explicitly recommends the highest available refresh rate for G-SYNC setup.
- Enable the display’s VRR mode. In the monitor’s on-screen menu, turn on FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or the vendor’s equivalent when supported. AMD includes display-side enablement in its setup guidance.
- Enable VRR in graphics software. In NVIDIA Control Panel, configure G-SYNC for a compatible display. In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, check and enable FreeSync. Follow the vendor’s setup pages: NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync.
- Check whether FPS regularly exceeds the display’s maximum refresh rate. If it does, AMD recommends V-Sync or a cap; NVIDIA recommends a cap slightly below the VRR maximum for G-SYNC.
- Change one setting at a time in the game you play. Check for tearing, stutter, responsiveness, and frame pacing. Vendor guidance does not establish one setting that wins across every game and system.
- If you try Enhanced Sync, check the game API and other apps. It does not support OpenGL; if multimedia playback flickers or behaves badly, disable Enhanced Sync for that use.
Where to change V-Sync depends on the game and API
V-Sync may be controlled by the game rather than a global driver toggle. AMD’s Radeon “Wait for Vertical Refresh” control applies only to OpenGL applications; in other APIs, including DirectX and Vulkan, V-Sync is controlled in the application’s graphics settings. If a driver setting appears to have no effect, check the game’s own video or graphics menu and the API it uses. AMD’s Radeon settings guidance describes this distinction.

What the recommendations can—and cannot—settle
Vendor documentation provides supported starting points, not a universal prescription or an independent measurement of how much latency a particular player will notice. AMD’s official description calls FreeSync a hardware/software solution for smooth, tear-free, low-latency gameplay and video; that is AMD’s characterization, not an independent test result. Likewise, a vendor example for LFC or a vendor comparison for Enhanced Sync should not be read as a result guaranteed on every system. Your display’s VRR range, game, graphics API, and preference for responsiveness or tear-free output determine which setting works best for you.
