If game audio is drowning out your friends, move Headset chat mixer toward chat in the Xbox guide’s Audio & music controls. Use Headset volume to raise or lower all headset audio, and adjust Mic monitoring only to change how much of your own voice you hear. These are three different controls, not three ways to boost your microphone.
What each Xbox headset setting does
Xbox describes these headset controls in its headset setup guidance. Their purpose is easiest to understand by separating overall loudness, the game-and-chat balance, and feedback from your own microphone.

How to make party chat louder than game audio
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select the Audio & music icon.
- Move Headset chat mixer a little toward chat. Make small adjustments while listening until voices are clear without making the game uncomfortably quiet.
- If both chat and game audio need to be louder or quieter, adjust Headset volume instead of pushing the mixer all the way to one side.
The mixer changes what you hear; it is not a microphone gain control. An extreme position can mute chat or game audio, so use one only when you deliberately want to silence that source.
What mic monitoring does—and does not do
Mic monitoring is sidetone: it feeds some of your own voice back into your headset so you can hear yourself while playing. Set it to taste. It does not, according to Xbox’s description of the control, raise the microphone level other players receive. If friends say your voice is too quiet, changing mic monitoring is not the fix; this setting concerns your listening experience.

If a control is greyed out or chat still is not working
Labels and availability can vary with headset and software configuration. If a control is missing or unavailable, or your microphone still is not working, check the headset’s physical mute and volume controls and use the Xbox support flow that applies to your headset or party issue. Do not assume that changing the chat mixer will repair a muted or otherwise non-functioning microphone.

Xbox states that all Xbox Series X|S controllers have a 3.5 mm jack and can connect to wired headphones with a 3.5 mm plug. That is an option if your existing headset is missing or incompatible—not a necessary purchase for a problem caused only by the game/chat balance. The cited guidance does not establish compatibility for specific wireless headset models.
