Local payment methods can be safe, but availability does not tell you whether a payment is private, reversible, or refundable. Use the official game or console store, check its refund rules and the payment provider’s terms, and compare how much information you disclose with what recourse you have if something goes wrong. The right choice depends on your country, store, and payment type.
What “safe” means when you pay for a game
Payment safety has several separate parts. A method might keep your card number from the seller but offer limited help if the game never arrives. Another might provide a dispute route while exposing more payment information. Consider these factors before choosing:

- Credential exposure: Does the merchant receive your card or bank details, or does a wallet mediate the payment?
- Disputes and refunds: Can you challenge an unauthorized or disputed payment, and what do the store’s, provider’s, and local laws’ terms allow?
- Loss limit: Can you cap spending with a prepaid balance, card controls, or purchase authentication?
- Restrictions: Are funds refundable or transferable, and are they limited to a specific platform or region?
- Account risk: Could someone who takes over your gaming account spend its balance or saved payment methods?
A digital wallet can reduce the details a seller receives without guaranteeing that a dispute will succeed. PayPal’s UK service description says the seller need not receive the buyer’s underlying funding credentials; that describes credential sharing, not buyer protection for every game purchase: PayPal UK’s security information. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises checking the terms of payment services such as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay: NCSC online-shopping guidance.
How common payment choices compare
No single option is best everywhere. This comparison describes trade-offs, not a universal ranking; refund rights and dispute procedures depend on your country, the merchant, and the provider.

Why a local method may not be refundable
A payment option appearing at checkout means the store accepts it; it does not by itself mean the store or payment provider will return the money after a problem. For example, EA lists Boleto Bancario, MyCard, Online Banking TH / MOLPay, Yandex, Paysafecard, Ukash, CashU, InComm Card, Coda Payments, Midasbuy, Xsolla, and Devco among methods it treats as non-refundable for EA purchases: EA’s returns and cancellations information. That is EA’s policy for its purchases, not a rule about those services at every merchant.
Bank transfers deserve particular caution when the seller is unfamiliar. The UK NCSC’s online-shopping guidance says, “Never pay by direct bank transfer.” This is UK guidance; the practical concern is that a transfer to a fraudulent or unreliable seller may leave you with limited ways to recover the money. Prefer the official platform checkout over a private seller’s request for a transfer.

When prepaid cards and platform wallets make sense
Prepaid Visa or Mastercard cards and game-platform gift cards can help you avoid leaving a primary card saved on a gaming account or limit the amount at risk. Australia’s Cyber.gov.au specifically suggests considering prepaid Visa or Mastercard where payment details must be saved, and names Steam and Nintendo eShop gift cards as examples of prepaid game cards: Cyber.gov.au gaming security advice. Before buying, confirm the card is authorized for your country and platform, that its currency and region match the account, and that you understand the redemption and refund rules.
A platform balance can make spending more predictable, but it may keep money tied to that platform. PlayStation’s US terms say wallet funds may be added by credit or debit card, prepaid card, code, or other locally available approved methods. Those terms say funds are generally non-refundable and non-transferable except where required by law, and can be used only on PlayStation Store or certain third-party services: PlayStation Network Terms of Service (US). These are US PlayStation terms, not a description of every PlayStation region or another platform.

Protect the account as well as the payment
Even a payment method with limited exposure can be misused if someone takes over the account that holds your games and payment details. Cyber.gov.au recommends unique passphrases, multifactor authentication (MFA), avoiding saved payment details where practical, purchase authentication, and buying through official platforms. A password manager can help create and store unique passphrases, but it does not add refund rights or prevent every compromise.
The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reported in 2024 on hacking attempts, account theft, scams, and unauthorized transactions in gaming marketplaces. It cautioned that game operators may not provide the protections associated with traditional banking systems: CFPB report on banking in video games and virtual worlds. The report relays a study of 10,000 gamers globally: 63 percent of respondents felt their accounts were not safe enough from attacks, and one in three said their account had been hacked in the prior two years. The CFPB was reporting those findings, not conducting the original study.

For children or shared accounts, consider purchase prompts, parental controls, or a bank-level merchant block if your provider offers one. In an April 2024 advisory, the CFPB also suggested considering gift cards or other options to prevent unexpected game charges: CFPB advice on avoiding unexpected video-game charges.

- Open the official store directly. Use the game publisher’s or console platform’s official checkout rather than a link or payment request from an unfamiliar seller.
- Read the store’s refund terms for your purchase. Look for rules that apply to the game, region, and chosen payment method.
- Check the payment provider’s terms. Find out whether disputes or chargebacks may apply, and what credentials the seller receives.
- Choose a spending limit that fits. If you want to avoid saving a primary card, consider an authorized prepaid card or platform gift card and verify its region and redemption restrictions.
- Secure the gaming account. Use a unique passphrase and MFA, require authentication for purchases where available, and remove stored payment details if you do not need them.
- Keep proof of the transaction. Save the receipt and relevant order details so you can contact the store or payment provider promptly if the charge is unauthorized or the purchase fails.

They do not establish a universal best local method: local payment rails, legal protections, gift-card availability, and refund treatment vary by country, platform, and seller.
