Vaughan is the writer and co-creator; Cliff Chiang is the artist and co-creator. Their best-documented shared project is Paper Girls, an Image Comics series collected as Paper Girls: The Complete Story. If you want to see their collaboration in one purchase, that complete collection is the clearest place to begin. If you want to understand Vaughan’s writing or Chiang’s art separately, start with the creator whose role and catalogue match your interests.
The short answer: writer, artist and co-creators
Vaughan and Chiang occupy different creative roles in comics. Vaughan writes and co-creates stories; Chiang draws the sequential art and is also credited as a co-creator on Paper Girls. A comic is not divided into a “Vaughan half” and a “Chiang half”: the script, page layouts, character acting, lettering and color work have to function as one visual narrative. Their shared credit identifies a collaboration rather than a solo work illustrated by a hired artist.

Brian K. Vaughan: the writer and co-creator
Vaughan is the person to follow if your main interest is story construction, dialogue, character arcs or the way a comics script gives an artist room to build a page. His work spans creator-owned projects and stories using established DC and Marvel characters. The titles most often used to represent his catalogue are listed below.
| Work | Vaughan’s role | Why it belongs in a starter map |
|---|---|---|
| Y: The Last Man | Writer and co-creator | A central creator-owned title in his representative bibliography. |
| Ex Machina | Writer and co-creator | Another major creator-owned work that shows his range beyond a single series. |
| Pride of Baghdad | Writer and co-creator | A standalone-looking entry in the list, useful for readers who do not want to begin with a long serial catalogue. |
| Runaways | Writer | A prominent Marvel-related credit and a route into his work with an established superhero property. |
| Saga | Writer and co-creator | One of Vaughan’s best-known creator-owned collaborations. |
| Paper Girls | Writer and co-creator | The documented collaboration with Cliff Chiang. |
This table is a way to choose an entry point, not a ranking. The available creator biographies support the credits and representative titles, but they do not establish a complete, current list of every issue, edition or collaboration. A reader looking for “everything Vaughan has written” should treat the list above as a starting map rather than a bibliography.
How to choose a Vaughan starting point
- Choose Paper Girls if you want Vaughan working directly with Chiang.
- Choose Saga, Y: The Last Man or Ex Machina if you want to explore his creator-owned writing beyond this partnership.
- Choose Runaways if your priority is seeing his contribution to a Marvel property.
- Choose Pride of Baghdad if you prefer to begin with a single named project rather than follow a broad catalogue.
No edition-level comparisons for those Vaughan books are established here, so check the specific collected edition’s contents and publication details before buying. The one collection explicitly documented here is Paper Girls: The Complete Story.
Cliff Chiang: the artist and co-creator
Chiang is an artist whose publisher biography highlights work on both DC characters and other comic properties. His named credits include The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Wonder Woman, as well as Paper Girls with Vaughan.

| Work or character line | What the documented credit tells you |
|---|---|
| The Creeper | Chiang’s biography includes this title among his professional art credits. |
| Human Target | Another named project in his publisher biography. |
| Green Arrow | A DC character associated with his listed work. |
| Black Canary | A second DC character in the same biography. |
| Wonder Woman | One of Chiang’s prominent DC-associated credits. |
| Paper Girls | His documented co-creation with Vaughan; the complete collection also credits Matt Wilson. |
If you arrive as a Chiang reader, Paper Girls lets you see his art in a creator-owned collaboration rather than only through the DC character work named in his biography. If you arrive through Wonder Woman, Green Arrow or Black Canary, remember that an artist’s contribution can vary with the writer, colorist, editorial brief and publication format. A title credit identifies the project; it does not by itself describe every issue or edition.
What “artist” means in this collaboration
In a modern comic, the artist translates a script into page-by-page storytelling: panel composition, staging, facial expression, movement, environments and visual continuity. The published credit for Paper Girls also names Matt Wilson, so the finished look is a team result rather than Chiang’s line work in isolation. That distinction matters when you compare Paper Girls with a project where Chiang’s credited collaborators are different.
Their shared work: Paper Girls
Image Comics announced Paper Girls as an ongoing series by Vaughan and Chiang. The publisher’s complete collected edition is titled Paper Girls: The Complete Story and credits Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson. Image lists November 2, 2021 as the publication date for that complete collection.

For a reader seeking their collaboration, the complete story is practical because it gathers the documented series in one named edition instead of requiring a search through individual issues or partial collections. The phrase “complete story” belongs to the publisher’s edition title; it should not be generalized to every format or retailer listing. Confirm the contents of the edition sold in your region if a bookseller uses a different product description.

Why Paper Girls is the logical first purchase
- It is the clearest shared credit. Vaughan and Chiang are identified as co-creators, not merely as writer and guest artist on unrelated projects.
- It is collected. Image’s named edition is Paper Girls: The Complete Story, published November 2, 2021.
- It represents the full creative team. Matt Wilson is also credited, so readers can identify the writer, artist and colorist-level collaboration.
- It avoids an incomplete comparison. The available biographies establish many solo or character-based credits, but not enough edition details to compare every collection side by side.
The earlier Swamp Thing connection
Do not describe Paper Girls as the first time Vaughan and Chiang worked together. In Image’s announcement, Vaughan said he was “overjoyed to finally launch a second series for Image” with his “old friend Cliff Chiang,” adding that they had last collaborated on a Swamp Thing short story “almost 15 years ago.” The statement establishes an earlier short-story collaboration, but the material here does not identify its issue, exact publication date or collection. It is therefore best treated as context, not as a second fully documented series to seek out.
“I’m overjoyed to finally launch a second series for Image, especially because I’m doing it with my old friend Cliff Chiang, who I last collaborated with on a Swamp Thing short story almost 15 years ago,” said Brian K. Vaughan.
Which book should a Vaughan newcomer read first?
There is no single correct Vaughan entry point because “newcomer” can mean several different things. Someone who wants to understand Vaughan’s writing in general has a different need from someone who wants the Vaughan–Chiang partnership specifically. Use the decision path below.
If you want the partnership
Start with Paper Girls: The Complete Story. It is the documented complete collection of their principal shared series, with Matt Wilson also credited. This is the most direct answer to a request for “a Vaughan book drawn by Chiang.”

If you want Vaughan’s wider creator-owned work
Pick one of the representative creator-owned titles—Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad or Saga—then use that experience to decide whether to continue through his catalogue. The available evidence confirms those titles as representative works but does not establish a reliable ranking, preferred reading order or like-for-like collected formats.
If you want Vaughan writing established characters
Runaways is the named Marvel route in this guide, while Vaughan’s biographies also note major DC and Marvel character work more broadly. A character-based starting point may be preferable if you already follow superhero comics, but check which issues and edition a retailer is offering because the title alone does not specify the contents.
If you are discovering Chiang first
Begin with Paper Girls if you want his co-created work with Vaughan. Begin with the specific Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, The Creeper or Human Target collection available to you if your interest is his art on those properties. The source material names the projects but does not provide a complete edition guide for them.

Readers often compare a writer’s bibliography with an artist’s bibliography as though they were equivalent lists. They are not. Vaughan’s list is organized mainly by stories he wrote or co-created; Chiang’s is organized mainly by projects on which he supplied art. Paper Girls is the useful bridge because both creators are identified as co-creators.

| Question | What to check | What is established here |
|---|---|---|
| Who wrote it? | Look for the writer credit in the edition or issue. | Vaughan is the writer and co-creator of Paper Girls. |
| Who drew it? | Look for the artist credit and any additional art credits. | Chiang is the artist and co-creator of Paper Girls. |
| Who completed the visual team? | Check color, lettering and design credits. | Matt Wilson is also credited on Paper Girls: The Complete Story. |
| Is it a shared project? | Distinguish co-creation from a creator’s unrelated work on a licensed character. | Paper Girls is their documented shared series; Vaughan also cites an earlier Swamp Thing short story. |
| How much story is included? | Confirm whether the book is a complete collection, a volume or individual issues. | Image names a complete collection, Paper Girls: The Complete Story. |
This approach prevents two common mistakes: crediting Chiang with Vaughan’s other writing projects, or treating every Chiang DC credit as a Vaughan collaboration. The creators’ careers overlap at specific projects, not across their entire bibliographies.
The television adaptation: what can safely be said
A 2022 Syfy Wire interview described Vaughan and Chiang as co-creators and executive producers on the television adaptation of Paper Girls. That is a time-specific description of their roles. It does not establish where the adaptation is currently available, whether every region carries it, or whether a particular subscription includes it now. Streaming catalogues and licensing change, so verify current availability directly before planning a viewing.
The adaptation credit also does not replace the comics. If your question is “What did Vaughan and Chiang make together?”, the answer remains the comic series and its complete collection. If your question is “How were they involved with television?”, the documented answer is that the 2022 interview identified them as co-creators and executive producers.

- Decide whose work you are testing. Choose Vaughan’s writing, Chiang’s art or their partnership.
- For the partnership, obtain Paper Girls: The Complete Story. Check that the listing names Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson and identifies Image Comics as publisher.
- Read the complete collection before branching out. This keeps the collaboration’s roles clear and avoids confusing a Vaughan solo credit with a Chiang project.
- Branch through the representative lists. Vaughan readers can move to Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways or Saga. Chiang readers can investigate The Creeper, Human Target, Green Arrow, Black Canary or Wonder Woman.
- Check edition contents before ordering. The documented source confirms the complete Paper Girls collection, but not the volume structure, page count or contents of every other title.
- Keep the earlier short story in perspective. Vaughan’s statement confirms a prior Swamp Thing collaboration, while the issue and collection details are not established here.
What this guide does—and does not—claim
This is a representative guide to two creators, not an exhaustive bibliography. It does not assign sales totals, award counts, readership figures or a definitive ranking because no verified numerical statistics are established here. It also does not claim personal testing or reading experience.
The strongest documented conclusions are narrower and more useful: Vaughan is the writer and co-creator; Chiang is the artist and co-creator; Paper Girls is their principal documented shared series; Image Comics lists Paper Girls: The Complete Story with a November 2, 2021 publication date; Matt Wilson is credited on that collection; and Vaughan has publicly identified an earlier Swamp Thing short-story collaboration. Start with the complete Paper Girls collection if you want the partnership, then explore each creator’s representative work according to whether writing or art is your priority.
