The six names most often meant by “the Sirens in Borderlands 3” are Lilith, Maya, Amara, Tyreen, Tannis, and Ava. They are not six Sirens alive and holding power side by side at the end of the game. The “six” is a limit on how many Sirens can exist at one time, and the game keeps moving those powers between characters through death, theft, and inheritance.
The six names and where each one stands

Angel is not in the usual six-name list, yet she matters to the succession. Angel is dead, and her powers pass to Tannis. Reading the table as six living holders would be a mistake.
Why “six” is a limit on the living, not a headcount
Gearbox narrative managing producer Randy Varnell said before release: “There are only six Sirens in the universe at any one time.” The statement came in a GameSpot interview published on September 9, 2019, during the Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal coverage. In the same interview, Varnell said Steele and Angel were dead, and he named Lilith, Maya, and Amara among the known Sirens. Because that interview predates the final game, his roster comments reflect the pre-release view of the story rather than the finished plot.

Sam Winkler, co-lead writer on Borderlands 3, described the game this way in a PC Gamer interview, republished on Steam News: “Borderlands 3 blows up some pre-conceptions of Siren powers and how they find their way to people.” He also called Lilith “one of the six legendary Sirens.” The copy reviewed for this article does not show a publication date, so treat the quote as a developer interview, not in-game dialogue.
Three distinctions keep the answer accurate:
- Alive or deceased at a given point. Maya and Angel are dead by the end, so they cannot be counted as current holders.
- Original holder or inheritor. Ava and Tannis hold powers they did not originate.
- The six-at-once rule or the full set of characters. The rule limits simultaneous Sirens. The list of everyone who has held the powers is longer.
How the powers change hands
Maya to Ava
Troy drains Maya, and her power is taken by him. When Troy dies, the power he had stolen from Maya passes to Ava, Maya’s apprentice. Ava’s position is therefore an inheritance from a character who was already dead, not a separate line of Siren power.

Angel to Tannis
Tannis reveals that she inherited Angel’s Siren powers. Angel’s death is what opens the succession, which is why Tannis appears in the six-name list even though she was not an original Siren in the way Lilith or Maya were.
Lilith, Tyreen, and the stolen powers
Tyreen steals Lilith’s powers using her life-draining ability. Lilith loses them until Tyreen is defeated, after which Lilith regains them. This is the clearest case of a power changing hands and returning to its original holder.

Troy and Tyreen
Troy and Tyreen are conjoined twins. The plot account states that Troy needs Tyreen’s powers to survive. That dependence makes counting Troy and Tyreen as two wholly independent power holders misleading. Troy is not one of the six names, but his theft of Maya’s powers is what sends them to Ava.

The statements above come from two developer interviews, one from 2019 and one from a PC Gamer piece republished later. They are reliable for what the developers said about the Siren lore, but they are not a substitute for the in-game text. The sequence of events comes from a secondary plot summary checked against those interviews. This article does not quote the game’s dialogue line by line, and it does not review the full Eridian inscriptions. It also makes no claim about Siren characters in later franchise entries beyond Borderlands 3.
