Who Benefits From Esports? Players, Teams, Publishers and Fans

Players are only one group that benefits from esports. Teams, publishers, event organizers, brands, creators and fans each gain through different channels, but none is guaranteed a financial return.

Esports benefits more than the players on screen. Teams, game publishers, tournament organizers, sponsors, media and service businesses can gain income or commercial reach, while fans get competition, entertainment and community. The benefits are uneven: a possible income stream is not proof that most players earn a living, and the available sources do not establish a typical player salary or a current, universal esports market total.

How value moves through esports

Esports connects a game, the rights that govern its use, competitors, events, audiences and businesses that help produce or distribute them. Money can move through salaries, prizes, sponsorships, tickets, advertising, merchandise, content, licensing and subscriptions. Other benefits are less direct: fans find entertainment and community, creators build audiences, and local programs may widen access to competition.

Who benefits—and how much—depends on the game, commercial agreements, audience, and the person’s or organization’s role. The same activity can create value for several groups without distributing it equally.

Who benefits from esports?

Players: income opportunities, not guaranteed careers

Professional players may receive team salaries and prize winnings. Some also earn through personal sponsorships, livestreaming, video content, advertising, subscriptions, donations or merchandise. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) says elite players are primarily paid by teams and that personal sponsorship opportunities depend on substantial notoriety (WIPO’s overview of stakeholder business models).

Those channels describe possibilities, not typical earnings. A prize pool, salary opportunity or creator revenue stream does not show that most competitors earn a living from esports; the sources do not establish average or median player income.

Teams: sponsorship is central in one reported survey

Teams can earn from sponsorships and partnerships, tournament prizes, merchandise and content distributed on streaming or video platforms. Deloitte reported the following revenue mix in its survey of 53 company representatives across 15 countries:

Reported category Share of surveyed team revenue
Core esports activities 65% on average
Of which: sponsorship sales 37%
Of which: prize money 15%
Adjacent activities 31%

These are figures from Deloitte’s reported survey, not a universal or current accounting standard; the categories do not account for every revenue category in the same way. They indicate why sponsorship can matter to teams, but do not establish that every team is profitable. See Deloitte’s esports analysis.

Tournament organizers and event hosts: revenue depends on the event model

Organizers and hosts may earn from event operations, ticket sales, advertising, broadcast arrangements, premium access or subscriptions, and competition merchandise. But broadcast rights should not be treated as an automatic source of profit: WIPO notes that gameplay broadcasts are generally free to watch in current industry trends and that broadcasting has diminished in significance as a primary income source (WIPO’s overview of stakeholder business models).

Publishers and developers: control of the game shapes the business

Developers create and maintain games; publishers typically handle distribution and marketing and may fund development or organize or authorize major events. Publishers generally hold important game rights, so permissions and contracts can shape who may stage competitions, broadcast gameplay or sell branded goods. Developers may benefit from esports-related in-game purchases and can negotiate contractual participation in future development. WIPO’s stakeholder map and business-model overview explain these roles.

Sponsors and brands: visibility in exchange for support

Sponsors provide money, resources or promotion in exchange for visibility through teams, players, events and content. Some brands are closely associated with gaming; others come from outside the sector. Sponsorship can help fund competition and content creation, but value depends on audience engagement and whether that audience fits the brand. Deloitte cautions that esports audiences are not simply identical to all people who play games; a sponsorship does not guarantee a measurable return (Deloitte’s esports analysis).

Fans and viewers: entertainment, community and influence

Fans benefit from watching competition, following teams and players, and sharing an interest with a community. They also have agency: viewing, attending events, discussing matches and supporting creators help determine which competitions and teams attract attention. Some fans choose to contribute through tickets, merchandise, memberships, donations, crowdfunding or streaming subscriptions; spending is not a requirement for participating as a fan.

WIPO describes fans as central to the popularity and commercial success of events, players and teams. That framing recognizes both their community role and the demand their attention creates (WIPO’s stakeholder map).

Creators, platforms, retailers and support businesses: work around the competition

Streamers, video creators and influencers can build audiences and earn through advertising, subscriptions, donations, sponsorships or other content revenue. Commentary, tutorials and community activity can also make competitions more visible. Streaming and social platforms distribute events, enable interaction and may negotiate exclusive broadcast arrangements.

Retailers sell team apparel, merchandise, equipment and gaming peripherals. Event production, management, hardware, IT, technical support, telecommunications, software and trade organizations also support esports. These are credible parts of the ecosystem, but the cited sources do not quantify their current esports-specific income or employment.

Governments and local communities: outcomes depend on the program

Some governments support grassroots development, facilities, competitions, regulation or social programs, including efforts to attract players and teams from underprivileged areas. Such programs can create local access and activity, but their effects depend on design and context; government action can also impede the sector. There is no basis for assuming a uniform community benefit across places or programs (WIPO’s stakeholder map).

  • Team revenue: Deloitte’s reported survey of 53 company representatives in 15 countries found 65% of surveyed team revenue came from core esports activities, including 37% from sponsorship sales and 15% from prize money; 31% came from adjacent activities. These are survey averages, not a universal current revenue mix (Deloitte).
  • Consumer activity: In Deloitte’s survey conducted August–September 2022 among about 25,000 people in 22 countries, 14% of respondents said they watched esports weekly, and 15% said they had played and spent money on esports in the previous six months. These dated survey responses are not current global audience totals (Deloitte).
  • Wellbeing and games generally: The Entertainment Software Association’s 2025 Global Power of Play survey included 24,216 active video-game players aged 16 or older across 21 countries. In that general gaming sample, 77% said games helped them feel less stressed, 70% reported reduced anxiety and 64% credited games with easing loneliness by connecting them to others. These are respondents’ views about video games broadly—not esports-specific or causal findings (ESA’s 2025 report).

The ESA’s guide once projected an esports industry size of $1.1 billion in 2021 and more than $1.6 billion by 2024. Those are historical expectations, not observed current market totals, so they cannot establish today’s market size (The ESA’s guide to esports).

Why benefits are uneven

Commercial gains depend on more than participation. Rights determine who can authorize a competition or monetize game-related material; audience attention makes sponsorship, content and events more valuable; and contracts determine how revenue is shared. A player may compete without a salary, a team may attract sponsors without making a profit, and a fan may be central to a community without spending money. Esports creates opportunities and shared experiences, not a guaranteed financial or social outcome for every participant.
