GameStop Canada’s operating company was acquired by Stephan Tetrault, and the buyer announced that the retailer would return to the EB Games Canada name. Those are two distinct developments: a sale of the Canadian business and a planned customer-facing brand relaunch. GameStop Corp. later confirmed that the sale was completed during its fiscal 2025 second quarter, but the available announcements do not establish when the rebrand was completed across all stores and online.
Who bought GameStop Canada?
On May 5, 2025, GameStop Canada announced that Stephan Tetrault acquired Electronics Boutique Canada Inc. from GameStop Global Holdings S.à r.l. Electronics Boutique Canada Inc. operated the Canadian retail stores and e-commerce business. GameStop Corp.’s subsequent Form 10-Q confirms that the sale was completed during the company’s fiscal 2025 second quarter. The filing says the proceeds and related loss were immaterial to GameStop’s financial statements; it does not disclose a purchase price. GameStop Canada’s announcement and GameStop Corp.’s filing document the announcement and the later confirmation, respectively.

Is GameStop Canada changing back to EB Games?
Yes, that was the direction announced by the new owner: the retailer would relaunch under the EB Games Canada brand. The announcement describes a planned relaunch, not a verified date by which every store and the online business had completed the change. It identifies Tetrault as owner and CEO of the newly rebranded EB Games Canada and quotes him saying, “This isn’t just a business decision—it’s about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved.”
The change reverses the name transition announced by GameStop Corp. on July 28, 2021. At that time, the company said EB Games’ Canadian locations and online store would take the GameStop name by the end of 2021, citing customer and stockholder feedback. GameStop’s 2021 announcement records that earlier decision.

What happened to EB Games Canada?
EB Games’ Canadian business was renamed GameStop in 2021 while it remained part of the GameStop corporate group. In 2025, the Canadian operating company was sold to Tetrault, who announced plans to bring back the EB Games Canada name. The history is therefore both a change in ownership and a change in branding—not simply a name change made by GameStop Corp.
GameStop Canada described the chain as having more than 185 stores in its May 5, 2025 announcement. That is the company’s figure at the time of the announcement, not an independently verified current store count.

Will existing pre-orders and gift cards still work?
In its transition announcement, GameStop Canada said daily operations would continue and that pre-orders and gift cards would be honored during the transition. That statement reflects the company’s guidance when it announced the acquisition; it is not confirmation of current gift-card or pre-order terms. Check the retailer’s current terms or contact the store handling your order if you need to use a pre-order or gift card now. The company’s announcement contains its transition guidance.
