Special Infected are the distinctive infected enemies that hunt the Survivors in Left 4 Dead. The original game features five types: Hunter, Smoker, Boomer, Tank, and Witch. Left 4 Dead 2 includes those five and adds the Spitter, Jockey, and Charger, for a roster of eight.
What makes an infected “special”?
Unlike the ordinary common infected, each Special Infected presents a distinct threat. Some can attack or drag an individual Survivor; others can disrupt the group or put pressure on its position. Valve described them as hunting the lone Survivor in its 2010 “Last Man On Earth” mutation.

How the sequel changes the roster
The three additions in Left 4 Dead 2 are the Spitter, Jockey, and Charger. The distinction matters if you mean the first game specifically: its Special Infected are the Hunter, Smoker, Boomer, Tank, and Witch. Valve’s official 2009 update discusses the sequel’s new types alongside attacks and hit boxes; it is historical context, not a current balance guide.
What Valve’s old poll says—and does not say
In a May 28, 2010 post, Valve published separate favorite-Special-Infected poll results for PC and Xbox 360. The results differed by platform and are historical snapshots, not a measure of current player preferences.
