Fans usually mean Link when they ask who Zelda has a crush on. But Nintendo has not confirmed a universal romance: the relationship changes between games, and its meaning is often left open to players.
Does Zelda like Link?
Link is the most common answer, but “Zelda” is not one character in a single continuous romance. The games tell different stories, and affection or closeness in one does not establish a rule for every incarnation.
Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma has said that what the development team wanted to convey was placed in the game, while the rest is left to the player’s imagination. GameSpot reported his comments from an IGN interview.
Which games invite a romantic interpretation?
Skyward Sword
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword offers one of the clearest affectionate portrayals of Link and Zelda. Nintendo’s official Skyward Sword HD story page places both characters at the center of the story, but does not say that Zelda has a crush on Link. Reading their bond as romantic is an interpretation of this game, not a confirmed franchise-wide fact.

Echoes of Wisdom
In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the developers describe Link as significant to Zelda’s adventure: she wears his hood to represent him, and finding Link is one of the adventure’s themes. That establishes an important connection, but the developers do not define it as romance. Their comments appear in Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview.
What have the creators and performers said?
Aonuma’s comments leave room for players to decide what the games’ relationship cues mean; they do not confirm that Link and Zelda are a couple in every story.

Patricia Summersett, who voices Zelda in several games, clarified in a 2026 interview that her earlier remarks were not meant to confirm a romantic couple. She described the relationship as “a deep friendship and a protectorship between the two of them,” while allowing for different interpretations. This is Summersett’s view, not an official Nintendo canon ruling. GameSpot reported her clarification.

There is no universal official confirmation that they are. The most accurate answer is that fans commonly read Zelda as having feelings for Link, and some games support that reading more strongly than others, but Nintendo leaves the relationship open to interpretation rather than establishing one answer for every game.
