The lowest rank in League of Legends is Iron IV. Iron is the lowest tier, and Iron IV is the lowest division within it. Which label applies depends on what you are asking, so both are explained below.
Iron is the lowest tier; Iron IV is the lowest division
Riot Games’ official ranked support article, dated May 7, 2026, states that ranked players are divided into ten tiers, shown in ascending order. Iron is first on that list, which makes it the bottom tier. Iron has four divisions, and Division IV is the lowest of them.
In practice, the two answers mean different things:
- If you mean the tier, the answer is Iron.
- If you mean the exact rank a player holds, the answer is Iron IV, the lowest division.
How division order works inside a tier
Within each tier, divisions count down toward the next tier up. Riot’s own example describes a player climbing from Silver III through Silver II and Silver I before reaching Gold IV. So Division IV is always the bottom step of its tier, and Division I is the top step before promotion. Iron IV therefore sits below Iron III, Iron II and Iron I.

Solo/Duo and Flex rank separately
League of Legends has two ranked queues: Solo/Duo and Flex. A player’s rank in one does not carry over to the other. Iron is the bottom tier in both, but the same player can be Iron IV in Solo/Duo and a different division in Flex. When you discuss a specific player’s standing, name the queue.
What the ladder does not tell you
The tier list only establishes rank order. It does not identify the weakest player in any match, and it does not show which tier has the largest number of players. Riot’s May 7, 2026 article does not publish a population percentage for Iron. Its only player-share figure concerns Master: players who reach Master are described as the top 0.2% worldwide. That figure says nothing about how many players sit in Iron.
