Epic Games made Fortnite. None of the official sources reviewed names one person as the game’s sole inventor. Tim Sweeney founded Epic and leads it, but the record supports calling him the company’s founder rather than the individual creator of Fortnite. The Battle Royale mode has a more specific origin, and Epic’s own developers have described it in detail.
Who made Fortnite: the company
Fortnite is developed and operated by Epic Games. Epic’s About page describes Fortnite as one of the games it operates, and Epic’s developer documentation lists Fortnite as one of its products, identifying it as released in 2017. For a question about who made the game, the company is the accurate answer at the studio level.

Tim Sweeney’s role
Epic says it was founded in 1991 by its CEO, Tim Sweeney. That is a statement about who founded and leads the company. The official material does not give Sweeney sole creative credit for Fortnite, and it does not identify him as the person who conceived the game. Calling him Fortnite’s inventor would go beyond what the sources say, even though he is central to the company that built it.
Where Battle Royale came from
Battle Royale is a separate mode, and its development is documented more specifically than the original game’s. Two Epic staff members have described it on the record.

An Unreal Tournament team experiments with the mode
In a September 12, 2017 Xbox Wire post, Donald Mustard, then Epic’s Worldwide Creative Director, announced the mode and explained how it began:
“A few months ago, Epic’s Unreal Tournament team began experimenting with the mode while the original Fortnite team kept updating the core game.”

A prototype in about two months
In an April 17, 2018 PlayStation Blog interview, Fortnite design lead Eric Williamson described the concept as a combination of last-player-standing play and Fortnite’s building mechanics. He dated the work to a prototype started in July 2017 and a first released version in September 2017. In his words:

“In July of last year, we started to work on a prototype, and then released our first version of the game in September. So, roughly two months.”
Williamson’s interval is his own account from 2018, not a figure from a separate audit of the development process.

What the record does not establish
- No official source reviewed names a single individual as the inventor of the original Fortnite game.
- The Battle Royale sources identify teams and a design concept, not one originator of the idea.
- The two-month prototype timeline comes from a single developer interview, so it reflects that account rather than an independent record.
If you are asking who is responsible for Fortnite, the defensible answer is Epic Games, with Sweeney as its founder. If you are asking about Battle Royale, the answer is an Epic team working from a documented concept, with Williamson describing its design in 2018.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
