Arthur Morgan is John Marston’s fellow outlaw in Dutch van der Linde’s gang and a fellow protégé of Dutch. The two are often described as brothers, but they are not biological brothers. “Brother-like” is a fair way to describe the closeness between them, but it is an interpretation of their shared history, not a family relation stated in the official material.
The short answer
Arthur and John are both members of the Van der Linde gang, and both are closely tied to Dutch van der Linde, the gang’s leader. Xbox Wire’s September 7, 2018 character feature, “Meet the Van der Linde Gang from Red Dead Redemption 2,” describes the gang as outlaws, renegades, and misfits bonded together under Dutch, and it groups John and Arthur together as his “proudest protégés.” Those are the facts you can state without qualification. Everything beyond them, including the sense of brotherhood, comes from how the story and its performers present the pair.

Their roles in the gang
The two characters arrive at the gang from different starting points, and it helps to keep their positions separate before comparing them.
Arthur Morgan
Xbox Wire describes Arthur as Dutch’s dependable enforcer from boyhood. In practical terms, this places him as the gang member Dutch relies on to handle difficult or dangerous work, and as someone whose loyalty to Dutch goes back the longest of the two.

John Marston
John is described as an orphaned street kid whom Dutch took under his wing at age twelve. That origin matters for the relationship. John’s place in the gang begins as a child’s dependence on a surrogate father figure, and his bond with Arthur grows out of years of shared life in the same camps, on the same jobs, and under the same leader.
Brothers or not: literal and figurative
The word “brothers” appears often in discussions of these two, but it describes a feeling more than a documented fact. The table below separates what the cited sources support from what is interpretation.
| Description | Status | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Fellow members of the Van der Linde gang | Established | Xbox Wire, September 7, 2018 |
| Both are Dutch’s protégés | Established | Xbox Wire, September 7, 2018 (“proudest protégés”) |
| Arthur is Dutch’s dependable enforcer from boyhood; John was taken in at twelve | Established | Xbox Wire, September 7, 2018 |
| Biological brothers | Not supported | No cited source describes a blood relation |
| Brother-like bond | Interpretation | Describes closeness built through shared gang life |
| Arthur’s relationship to John is a mirror of Dutch’s bond with them | Interpretation | Reader analysis; not stated as a fact in the sources |
If you are writing about the pair or quoting them, use “fellow outlaws,” “fellow protégés of Dutch,” or “brother-like” with the last clearly framed as your reading of the story.

What the official and performer sources say
Xbox Wire’s character feature
The most useful official line is the one that places them side by side. Xbox Wire writes: “Shrewd, fearless and strong-willed, he and Arthur are Dutch’s proudest protégés.” The “he” refers to John Marston, so quote the line with that context rather than as a free-standing statement about Arthur.

Roger Clark, the actor and performance-capture performer for Arthur Morgan, spoke about his preparation in a Rockstar Universe interview. He said: “I knew how loved he was from the first Red Dead Redemption (I’m a massive fan too) so that was always on my mind.” The “he” refers to John Marston. Clark also said that trying to recreate what Rob Wiethoff did with Marston “was destined for failure.”
Those comments are useful for understanding how the character was approached. They are performer commentary, not in-world evidence. They show that the team wanted Arthur to stand as his own character rather than a copy of John, but they do not tell you what Arthur thinks of John inside the story.

Reading the bond across the story
The relationship between the two is best understood as three connected elements: shared gang membership, Dutch’s mentorship, and a personal bond that changes over the course of the game. The first two are clearly established. The third is where the interpretation lives, and it is also where most of the story’s emotional weight sits.
This article does not quote in-game dialogue or describe specific late-story events in detail, because the sources it draws on do not provide a verified transcript. If you want to quote a line or describe how the relationship develops, check the scene in the game itself.
Spoiler note
The gang context in this article is spoiler-free. The developments that shape how Arthur and John relate to each other in the later parts of the story, and in the epilogue, are not. Shacknews flagged its February 1, 2019 cast interview, “Exclusive Interview: Campfire chat with the stars of Red Dead Redemption 2,” as potentially containing spoilers, so read it after finishing the game if you want to avoid late-story reveals.

The short version: Arthur is John’s fellow outlaw and fellow protégé of Dutch, bound to him by shared gang life rather than blood. Describe the closeness as brotherly if you like, but keep it framed as interpretation.
