Aelirenn—also known as Elirena and the White Rose of Shaerrawedd—was an elf who led young elves in a revolt against humans. The uprising was crushed, and Aelirenn and her followers died. In Witcher lore, her defeat became a lasting symbol of elven resistance.
Who was Aelirenn?
Aelirenn is a remembered figure in Witcher lore, not a central viewpoint character. Her story is associated with Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Blood of Elves and with the games, including The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. She is also known as Elirena and as the White Rose of Shaerrawedd.
In the account Geralt tells Ciri, Aelirenn rallied young elves to fight humans despite warnings from older elves that the revolt could not succeed. The fighting ended in defeat, with Aelirenn and her followers dead.
What happened at Shaerrawedd?
Shaerrawedd was an elven palace that had become a ruin by the time Geralt and Ciri visited it in Blood of Elves. There, Geralt tells Ciri about Aelirenn’s revolt. White roses growing among the ruins are closely tied to her memory, giving the place its enduring connection to the “White Rose” name.

A specific year is not consistently established by the available references.
Why is Aelirenn important to the elves?
Aelirenn’s legacy holds two ideas together: the revolt was a military disaster, but her willingness to fight became a symbol of resistance. In The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, an in-game journal entry says that she “remains a symbol of fighting for freedom to this day,” and that elven insurgents go into battle invoking her name. That wording belongs to the game’s journal entry; it should not be mistaken for a passage from Sapkowski’s novel.

How the book and game accounts differ
Blood of Elves provides the scene in which Geralt recounts Aelirenn’s story to Ciri at Shaerrawedd. Separately, The Witcher 2 includes an in-game book titled The Life and Death of the White Rose and a journal account of her place in elven resistance. These are distinct presentations of the lore, not a single verbatim text shared between the novel and game.
Aelirenn is also mentioned in Netflix’s The Witcher, but that mention alone does not establish that the adaptation presents every detail of the book or game accounts in the same way.
