He is a young demigod, part god and part Giant, who travels with his father through the Norse games and grows from a curious child into a more independent young person. In God of War Ragnarök he becomes a playable character who searches for the meaning of Loki’s prophecy and his own place in the events of Ragnarök. In the story, the giants and the Aesir know him by a different name: Loki.
Who his parents are
Atreus’s father is Kratos, the former Greek god of war who now lives in the Norse realms. His mother is Laufey, whom the games often call Faye. PlayStation’s official God of War material gives her fuller title as Laufey the Just, and the name Faye is the one most players meet first in God of War (2018).
What kind of being he is
PlayStation’s official material describes Atreus as a young demigod. He is part god and part Giant, which is why his identity sits between Kratos’s world and the giants’ world. That mixed heritage matters in both games: it shapes how other characters see him and how Kratos has to think about raising a son whose powers and origins he only partly understands.
Why the giants and Aesir call him Loki
PlayStation’s official cosplay guide for Atreus states that the giants and the Aesir know him as Loki. Treat this as the name used for him inside the story, not as proof that the games simply retell Norse mythology. God of War draws on Norse myth, but it reshapes those figures and events for its own narrative, and Atreus’s identity is one of the clearest examples. Players who expect a one-to-one match with the myths will find the characters are adapted, not copied.

His role in God of War (2018)
The first game opens with Faye’s death and her final request. Kratos and Atreus set out to spread her ashes at the highest peak in the nine realms. Along the way Kratos trains his son while keeping his own godhood a secret from him. The relationship is built on three roles at once: Kratos is Atreus’s father, his mentor, and his protector.
The central tension of the game is Kratos learning how to guide Atreus while he confronts his own past and the dangers facing them both. The father is not a flawless teacher. He is working out how to be the parent his son needs, and much of the story’s emotional weight comes from that effort.

His role in God of War Ragnarök
Ragnarök takes place after the journey in the first game. Atreus is older and more focused on answers, particularly about what Loki’s prophecy means and what role he is meant to play in the coming events. The official game page frames the father-son conflict around Kratos’s fear of repeating his mistakes and his effort to be the father Atreus needs.
Playable for the first time
The sequel gives Atreus a playable role with distinct abilities and motivations. Santa Monica Studio says the game balances its focus between Kratos and Atreus, rather than keeping the story centred on the father alone. Playing as Atreus is therefore more than a change of controls; it is a different way of experiencing the same conflicts.

Why his independence is central
The studio describes Atreus’s increased autonomy as a deliberate part of the story’s development. In its official retrospective, the comments are attributed to Matt, a writer who contributed to God of War (2018), who said:
“He’s really trying to get people to recognize that he is his own person and that he has his own choices, and he should be allowed to do the things that he wants to do.”

That line captures the shift from the first game. Atreus is no longer mainly a child being guided. He is a character who wants to make his own decisions, and the story treats that wish as legitimate.
