He is one half of Solaris, a will-bearing flame deity, and takes Shadow’s appearance by copying his shadow after a seal is broken.
Who is Mephiles?
SEGA’s official character profile describes Mephiles as one half of Solaris and says his proper name is unknown. It characterizes him as a wary, mysterious figure who tries to mislead and use others.
Mephiles is not simply another version of Shadow. His Shadow-like appearance is the result of copying Shadow’s shadow, and his role in the story is tied to Solaris, Iblis, and the events surrounding the ruined future.
Why does Mephiles look like Shadow?
According to SEGA’s profile, Mephiles is sealed away; when that seal is broken, he copies Shadow’s shadow and returns in Shadow’s form. A SEGA director column about Shadow’s story gives the same explanation for the enemy who looks exactly like Shadow.

What does Mephiles do in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)?
In the game’s ruined future, Silver and Blaze are fighting Iblis. Mephiles appears and guides them into the past to eliminate the person they believe caused that future: Sonic, whom they identify as the “Iblis Trigger.” His manipulation brings Silver into the game’s present-day events and draws Sonic and Shadow into the larger Solaris crisis.
SEGA’s game page describes Mephiles as a mysterious character at the center of the story alongside Princess Elise and Eggman. The plot also involves Soleanna, the Flames of Disaster, and Eggman’s kidnapping of Elise.
