Clea is a Marvel Comics sorceress from the Dark Dimension, a longtime ally of Doctor Strange who eventually rules that realm and takes on the Sorcerer Supreme’s duties. Her story connects the magical worlds of Earth and the Dark Dimension, and readers can follow her rise from her first appearance in Strange Tales #126 to her lead role in the 2022 Strange series.
Who is Clea?
In Marvel’s comics continuity, Clea is half-Faltine and half Dark Dimension mortal. Umar is her mother, and Dormammu is her uncle. She becomes a powerful sorceress, a defender of the Dark Dimension’s people, and a central ally and partner to Doctor Stephen Strange. Marvel’s character biography describes her as a ruler who uses her mystical powers to protect her people and aids human sorcerers on Earth.
Clea’s history includes resisting Dormammu and leading a rebellion against tyrants in the Dark Dimension. Her story is not limited to being Doctor Strange’s ally: she becomes a ruler in her own right and later assumes the Sorcerer Supreme’s responsibilities.
What are Clea’s powers?
Marvel lists mysticism, astral projection, telepathy, and force fields among Clea’s abilities. Its biography also describes spellcasting, flight, teleportation, and other magical effects. These are not a fixed, always-available checklist: Marvel says her power varies with her energy, surroundings, and connection to the Dark Dimension, where her mystic powers are greatest. The character’s abilities are therefore best understood as broad magical talents whose strength depends partly on context, rather than as a single consistent power ranking.

When did Clea first appear?
Marvel identifies Strange Tales (1951) #126 as Clea’s first appearance and highlights the issue in its Clea reading guide. The Grand Comics Database dates the issue to November 1964. The “1951” in the title is the series’ starting year, not the publication year of issue #126.
Where should you start reading Clea’s comics?
Your best starting point depends on whether you want her debut, her earlier history with Doctor Strange, or her Sorcerer Supreme era. Marvel’s guide offers curated entry points, not a complete publication-order reading list.

A collected edition for her 2022 series
The paperback Strange Vol. 1: I Belong To Death collects Strange (2022) #1–5. Marvel lists its original publication date as September 28, 2022, and describes the story as following Clea as she takes on the Sorcerer Supreme’s duties and faces threats to the magical realm. It is a convenient way to read the opening arc of that era, not a collection of her complete history; the listed date does not establish current retail availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Clea fit into Doctor Strange’s story?
Clea’s story crosses between Doctor Strange’s Earth-centered adventures and the Dark Dimension. She aids Strange over a long partnership, while also confronting the threats and political conflicts affecting her home realm. That combination gives her an independent role: she is both a trusted ally in Earth’s magical conflicts and a leader responsible for the Dark Dimension.
