Queen Marika the Eternal is the ruler at the center of Elden Ring’s setting and history. Bandai Namco’s official synopsis says the Lands Between are ruled by Marika and that the Elden Ring—the source of the Erdtree—has been shattered. The expansion Shadow of the Erdtree adds a key piece of her story: the Land of Shadow is where she became God-Queen and where the Erdtree was born.
Who is Queen Marika?
Marika is presented as a central sovereign and religious figure in Elden Ring. The official game synopsis establishes her title, her rule over the Lands Between, and the shattered Elden Ring’s connection to the Erdtree. It does not, by itself, explain all of her decisions or motives.
Bandai Namco Europe’s introduction to the setting also describes great heroes who inherited Marika’s blood as rulers of the Lands Between. That framing makes her a dynastic figure as well as a ruler, though it is not a complete account of every character’s lineage or political history.
What does the Elden Ring have to do with Marika?
The publisher’s synopsis links Marika’s reign to the central crisis of the game: the Elden Ring has been shattered. It calls the Ring “the source of the Erdtree,” making the shattering consequential to the world’s order. The synopsis supplies that premise, but it does not establish Marika’s precise reason for the event.

“In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the ELDEN RING, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered.”

What does Shadow of the Erdtree reveal about her past?
Bandai Namco’s official Shadow of the Erdtree product information identifies the Land of Shadow as the place where Marika became God-Queen and where the Erdtree was born. This gives the expansion a direct connection to her history and to the origin of the tree central to the base game’s setting.
The product description establishes those location-and-history details, but it does not settle every question about why Marika acted as she did. Bandai Namco Europe’s separate overview of the Age of Gods says she “was driven to the brink”; that phrase should not be treated as proof of a specific motive without further in-game evidence.

- Publisher-established setting: Marika the Eternal rules the Lands Between; the Elden Ring is shattered; and the Ring is described as the source of the Erdtree.
- Expansion-era background: Bandai Namco says the Land of Shadow is where Marika became God-Queen and the Erdtree was born.
- Broad dynastic framing: Bandai Namco Europe describes great heroes who inherited Marika’s blood.
- Not established by these summaries: a complete account of Marika’s motives. Interpretations about why she acted should be distinguished from what official summaries explicitly say.
