There is no official, canon statement that definitively makes Beru or Igris the winner in a peak-strength one-on-one fight. The most defensible interpretation is stage-dependent: Beru has the clearer case for overwhelming physical pressure and special abilities, while Igris becomes a far more dangerous opponent once his original strength returns and his swordsmanship and battle experience are counted. If an unrestricted late-series duel forces a single pick, Beru is the safer choice on raw combat power, but that is an interpretation—not an official verdict.
Spoiler warning: this comparison goes beyond the shadows’ first appearances and includes Igris’s restored power. Anime-only viewers should treat the later sections as major story spoilers.

What “stronger” means in this matchup
“Stronger” can describe several different things in Solo Leveling. A fighter may have greater physical force, better speed and durability, more unusual abilities, superior technique, or a higher probability of winning under specific rules. Those categories do not automatically produce the same answer.
Recommended Free Tools
- Raw attributes: striking force, movement speed, durability and recovery.
- Technical skill: weapon control, timing, footwork, counters and the ability to exploit an opening.
- Combat experience: how well a fighter reads an opponent and adapts when an initial plan fails.
- Special abilities: powers that change distance, disable an opponent or create advantages that ordinary swordplay cannot answer.
- Story-stage power: whether the comparison uses an early appearance, a promoted shadow or a late-series version with restored abilities.
A claim that one character is “stronger” without naming these conditions mixes different versions of both shadows. That is the main reason online answers disagree.

Who Beru is
His origin and transformation
Beru begins as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast. Jinwoo defeats him, after which Beru becomes one of Jinwoo’s shadows. That origin matters because Beru enters the story with a demonstrated monster-level physical profile rather than being introduced as an ordinary soldier who gradually learns to fight.
Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: ARISE announcement identifies Beru as the first General-rank shadow in the original work. The same announcement explains that promotion to General rank enhances a shadow’s abilities and adds a skill. The rank is therefore evidence of Beru’s status at a particular point in the story, not a universal numerical power rating that settles every later matchup.
What his combat profile emphasizes
Secondary, fan-maintained character references commonly describe Beru as possessing immense strength, speed, durability and regeneration, along with additional abilities beyond simple melee attacks. Those references are useful for locating scenes and terminology, but they are not a publisher-issued ruling on a duel with Igris. Any individual ability should be checked against the licensed webtoon or novel scene before being treated as unquestionable canon.
In practical terms, Beru’s profile favors an aggressive fight. He can pressure an opponent with physical force, survive punishment that would end a normal battle and use more than one way to create a decisive opening. That combination makes him especially threatening in an open arena where he can keep moving and attack from changing angles.
Rank #2
Who Igris is
The first named shadow
Igris is the first shadow Jinwoo names. His introduction establishes him as a powerful armored swordsman whose identity is tied to disciplined weapon combat rather than to a single burst of monstrous force.
Official character material for Solo Leveling: KARMA states that Igris regains his original strength after Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. This is a crucial qualifier. Comparing an early Igris with a later Beru produces a misleading result because it gives one character a restored end-state while freezing the other at an earlier point.
What his combat profile emphasizes
Fan-maintained references emphasize Igris’s sword skill and combat experience alongside his physical strength. Even when a source lists a rank for him, that secondary label should not be treated as a definitive official comparison with Beru; the licensed material reviewed for this matchup does not publish a direct winner or a matched-stat table.

Igris’s likely advantage is control. A swordsman can win without matching every point of an opponent’s raw strength by managing distance, forcing predictable attacks and converting a small mistake into a clean counter. His experience also gives him a plausible answer to an unfamiliar ability after he has seen it once, although the story does not provide an official statement that he would definitely defeat Beru.

How story stage changes the answer
| Comparison point | Beru | Igris | What can responsibly be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial story presentation | Introduced as the Ant Queen’s strongest magic beast before becoming Jinwoo’s shadow. | Introduced as Jinwoo’s first named shadow and a highly capable swordsman. | The characters are being shown through different combat identities, so a single timeless ranking is already unreliable. |
| After becoming shadows | Retains the fearsome physical and special-ability profile associated with his magic-beast origin. | Continues to rely on swordsmanship, experience and shadow-body resilience. | Beru has the more obvious burst-threat profile; Igris has the more specialized technical profile. |
| Promotion evidence | Netmarble’s official announcement calls him the original work’s first General-rank shadow and says General promotion improves abilities and adds a skill. | No equivalent official page in the reviewed material directly ranks him against Beru. | Beru has explicit official rank context, but rank alone does not prove a duel result. |
| After Jinwoo’s full awakening | Remains a high-level shadow whose physical and special abilities matter in a prolonged fight. | Official character material says he regains his original strength. | Late-stage Igris cannot fairly be judged by his earliest showing; the matchup becomes substantially closer. |
Beru’s advantages in a duel
Explosive physical pressure
Beru’s strongest argument is that he can make the fight about survival immediately. Greater physical force and speed put a swordsman under constant defensive pressure. If Igris is forced to block rather than choose his attacks, the value of his technique is reduced because he has fewer safe moments to set up a counter.
Durability and regeneration
A fighter who can continue after taking damage changes the exchange rate of a battle. Igris may land a technically clean strike, yet Beru’s recovery can deny the usual payoff of that opening. Regeneration is not an automatic win—its limits and the severity of each attack still matter—but it allows Beru to accept risks that a less durable opponent could not.
More than one type of threat
Beru is not restricted to a straightforward sword-versus-sword contest. The available secondary descriptions attribute additional abilities to him, while the official rank announcement associates General promotion with enhanced shadow abilities and an added skill. That broader toolkit gives Beru more ways to disrupt Igris’s preferred distance and rhythm.

Specialist swordsmanship
Igris’s sword is not merely a prop for visual style; it defines the way he solves combat problems. A skilled swordsman can attack a limb, redirect momentum, punish an overextended charge or create a narrow line that a larger opponent cannot safely cross. Those options matter against an opponent who depends on relentless forward pressure.
Rank #4
Experience and adaptation
Experience is most valuable after the first exchange. If Beru’s initial assault does not end the fight, Igris can study timing, identify repeated attack patterns and choose when to disengage. This is an interpretive advantage rather than a quantified statistic, but it follows from the way the character is presented as a veteran combatant.
Restored original strength
The official Solo Leveling: KARMA description specifically says that Igris regains his original strength once Jinwoo unlocks his full Shadow Monarch abilities. Any late-series analysis that ignores this statement is measuring an incomplete version of Igris. Restored power does not establish that he surpasses Beru, but it removes the simplest reason to dismiss him.

Early versions, before Beru’s promotion context and Igris’s restoration
In an early-story comparison, Beru’s magic-beast origin gives him the clearer case for raw physical dominance. Igris remains dangerous because of his swordsmanship, but the evidence does not support treating an early Igris as equivalent to every later version of himself. Under these restricted versions, a Beru-favored interpretation is reasonable.
Beru after becoming a General-rank shadow versus ordinary-story Igris
This is the most one-sided version on paper. Beru has explicit official General-rank context, and the announcement says that promotion enhances a shadow’s abilities and adds a skill. If Igris is held at an earlier stage, Beru’s combination of rank evidence, physical pressure and multiple abilities gives him the stronger argument. The comparison is still not an official adjudication; it is an inference from different pieces of characterization.
Best Value
Restored Igris versus late-series Beru
This is the meaningful peak-strength discussion. Igris’s restored original strength closes the physical gap suggested by his early appearances, while his swordsmanship gives him a way to attack efficiently rather than trade blows. Beru still has the advantage in sustained pressure, recovery and variety of threats. The likely outcome depends on whether Igris can turn his technique into a disabling hit before Beru’s durability and abilities overwhelm him.
In an open arena with no preparation and no restrictions on abilities, a slight Beru edge is the safer interpretation because he can impose a punishing pace and tolerate mistakes. In a tightly controlled duel that rewards precise counters, Igris has a credible winning route. Neither result should be presented as something Netmarble or the original story has officially declared.
Anime-only comparison
If the comparison is limited to what the anime has shown at a reader’s current point, state that cutoff explicitly. The answer can change when later material reveals restored power, promotions or abilities. Saying “Beru is stronger” without naming an adaptation and episode or arc quietly combines evidence that an anime-only viewer has not yet seen.
A reliable way to judge future debates
- Fix the version. Name the arc, adaptation, or condition, such as “Beru after becoming a shadow” or “Igris after his original strength returns.”
- Set the rules. Decide whether the fight is an unrestricted battle, a formal sword duel, a surprise encounter or a contest with preparation time.
- Separate attributes from technique. Compare force, speed, durability and recovery independently from swordsmanship and experience.
- List demonstrated abilities. Use scenes from the licensed novel or webtoon where possible. Treat fan-maintained summaries as secondary references, not as official verdicts.
- Ask what ends the fight. Beru needs sustained pressure or a successful ability sequence; Igris needs a precise opening, superior positioning or a disabling counter.
- Label the conclusion. Call it an interpretation when the source material has not staged or declared the exact matchup.
Common mistakes in Beru-versus-Igris arguments
- Freezing Igris at his introduction: this ignores the official statement that he regains his original strength after Jinwoo’s full awakening.
- Treating rank as a power level: General-rank context shows development, but it is not a published table that automatically orders every shadow.
- Counting fan claims as publisher canon: wiki descriptions can help identify abilities, yet they should be verified against the underlying licensed scene.
- Confusing strength with duel probability: the physically stronger fighter may still lose to timing, range control or a targeted counter.
- Mixing adaptations and translations: different release points can show different abilities and use different terminology.
- Inventing numerical odds: no authoritative statistic or percentage settles this matchup, so numbers would create false precision.
Final assessment
The evidence supports a conditional answer rather than a permanent ranking. Beru is the stronger choice when “stronger” means immediate physical dominance, durability, regeneration and a broad ability set. Igris becomes a legitimate rival—and potentially the better duelist—once his original strength is restored and his swordsmanship and experience are given their full weight. Because the official material reviewed does not stage a definitive Beru-versus-Igris verdict, any article or post naming one winner should identify its story stage, rules and reasoning.
