A balanced starting preset
Use the following as a baseline before diagnosing a specific bottleneck. It is a practical starting point, not a guaranteed frame-rate preset.

Apply this baseline at your native resolution, play through a repeatable route, and record whether the problem is low average frame rate, sudden stutter, or image softness. Those symptoms require different changes.

How to get more FPS in Watch Dogs 2
1. Check the display mode and resolution first
Use the game’s graphics menu to select the monitor’s native resolution. Lowering the display resolution reduces the size of the entire output, including the interface, and can make the image look soft on a fixed-resolution panel. Keep the display resolution native initially so that you can use Pixel Density as a separate render-scale control.

2. Adjust Pixel Density before lowering display resolution
Pixel Density changes the game’s internal rendering resolution. At 1.0, the internal render resolution matches the selected display resolution. Values below 1 render fewer pixels and can improve performance, while values above 1 render more pixels for additional detail and antialiasing at a direct performance cost. The HUD and menus remain at the chosen screen resolution, so reducing Pixel Density does not shrink the interface.
If the frame rate is too low, try a small reduction such as 0.9, then 0.85, testing each value in the same scene. Stop when the image becomes unacceptably soft. If you have substantial headroom and want a cleaner image, increase Pixel Density gradually instead; this is effectively supersampling and can be expensive at 1440p or 4K.
3. Turn off MSAA before sacrificing render resolution
Multisample antialiasing (MSAA) smooths polygon edges by sampling them multiple times. In NVIDIA’s historical Watch Dogs 2 testing, 2x MSAA cost more than 10 FPS and 4x cost nearly 20 FPS. Those are measurements from that guide’s hardware and test scenes, not a prediction for every current computer, but they show why MSAA should not be your first quality setting.

Disable MSAA and use post-process antialiasing with temporal filtering. This combination can produce some ghosting or softness in motion, but it generally retains more performance. If you still have headroom after all other settings are stable, test MSAA at the lowest level and compare a repeatable scene; do not assume the historical FPS costs will be identical on your system.

4. Reduce Screen Space Reflections for rainy night dips
Screen Space Reflections (SSR) calculate reflections from information already visible on screen. Ultra SSR is particularly demanding when streets are wet and the game is running at night. Steam’s January 9, 2017 PC optimization tips specifically recommend changing SSR from Ultra to Very High when rainy night scenes have low frame rates.
This is a targeted change: if your slowdowns happen in bright daytime scenes, SSR may not be the primary cause. If the frame-time graph spikes whenever wet pavement and vehicle reflections appear, keep every other setting unchanged and compare Ultra with Very High on the same route. Very High preserves the effect while reducing the most demanding workload identified in the available guidance.
5. Confirm that memory is not the limiting factor
Close browsers, launchers and recording tools that are not needed while playing. Steam’s historical tips call out systems with 8 GB of system memory as especially vulnerable when other applications remain open. This will not turn a weak GPU into a fast one, but it can reduce paging-related hitching when physical memory is tight.

Steam’s older guidance says the Ultra texture pack requires more than 6 GB of VRAM, and that both cards in a dual-GPU setup need at least 6 GB. Treat that as period-specific game guidance rather than a universal rule for modern cards. If the meter approaches or exceeds your available VRAM, lower texture quality or remove the Ultra pack before changing unrelated effects.

Choosing a clarity-first or performance-first profile
Performance-first profile
- Native display resolution.
- Pixel Density below 1.0, reduced in small steps until frame pacing is acceptable.
- MSAA disabled.
- Post-process antialiasing and temporal filtering enabled.
- Screen Space Reflections set to Very High, especially if rain causes dips.
- Texture quality lowered only when the VRAM meter indicates pressure.
- Anisotropic filtering kept high unless testing shows a meaningful local cost.
This profile prioritizes stable frame times. It does not promise a particular FPS number because the cited material does not test current CPUs and GPUs across every area of the game.
Clarity-first profile
- Native display resolution and Pixel Density at 1.0.
- Increase Pixel Density only in small steps when the GPU has consistent headroom.
- Keep MSAA off initially; compare it only after the render scale and frame pacing are satisfactory.
- Use temporal filtering to control shimmer without immediately paying the MSAA cost.
- Keep SSR at Very High unless Ultra remains smooth in your actual rainy-night route.
- Use the highest texture level that fits VRAM, rather than selecting Ultra regardless of memory.
- Maximize anisotropic filtering for sharper oblique surfaces, then verify its effect on your frame rate.
NVIDIA also describes Dynamic Super Resolution as an optional driver-level supersampling route for compatible NVIDIA hardware. It is vendor-specific and should be treated as an alternative experiment, not a universal Watch Dogs 2 requirement.
Ambient occlusion: useful depth at a variable cost
Ambient occlusion adds small contact shadows beneath objects and in corners, helping streets, vehicles and interiors look grounded. The NVIDIA guide discusses HMSSAO, SSBC and HBAO+, with HBAO+ presented as a PC option in work associated with NVIDIA and Ubisoft. These techniques do not have one universal cost: the result depends on resolution, GPU and the rest of your graphics settings.
Choose a technique by comparing the same static view. If a lower-cost option gives nearly the same depth at your resolution, use it and spend the saved headroom on Pixel Density or another setting you notice more often. If the difference is important to you and frame pacing is already stable, retain the higher-quality option.

Official PC requirements and what they do—and do not—mean
Steam’s Watch Dogs 2 listing states the following targets. They describe the game’s original storefront context, not a current benchmark or a guarantee for a particular monitor.

The same listing states support for Windows 10 and Windows 11. NVIDIA’s historical guide also lists GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 1060 among additional recommended examples. These specifications are useful for checking whether your system is in the game’s intended range, but they should not be read as a promise of 60 FPS, modern frame-time consistency or performance at resolutions above the listed targets.

Low FPS everywhere
Lower Pixel Density first while keeping the display resolution native. If that produces a clear improvement, the GPU is likely under render load. Disable MSAA if it was enabled, then retest. If neither change helps, compare CPU use, GPU use and VRAM use with an overlay; the available historical sources do not establish a universal setting for every processor or graphics card.
Dips only at night in rain
Set SSR from Ultra to Very High and repeat the same rainy route. This is the most specific scene-based recommendation in the Steam tips. Keep the change if it improves frame pacing without an image-quality loss you can see; otherwise continue testing Pixel Density separately.

Soft image but acceptable frame rate
Confirm that Pixel Density has not fallen too far below 1.0. Restore it in small increments, and avoid lowering the display resolution unless necessary. Keep temporal filtering enabled, because turning it off can expose more shimmer even when the output looks sharper in a still frame.
Texture pop-in, hitching or out-of-memory warnings
Check the video-memory meter and reduce texture quality or remove the Ultra texture pack if the allocation exceeds available VRAM. Close unneeded applications when system RAM is constrained, particularly on an 8 GB machine. Do not infer that buying a new graphics card or adding memory is the correct fix without first identifying which meter is full.
Uneven frame pacing despite a reasonable average
Use a repeatable route rather than judging one short camera pan. Temporarily disable recording, overlays and background applications, then test one setting at a time. A high average FPS can still feel uneven if a particular scene, memory limit or effect produces long frame times.

A reliable same-scene tuning method
- Pick a route that includes normal driving, dense traffic, a reflective wet surface if possible, and the time of day that normally causes trouble.
- Set native resolution, Pixel Density 1.0, MSAA off, post-process antialiasing on, temporal filtering on and SSR Very High.
- Play the route long enough to reach the problem area, noting average FPS and whether the issue is a hitch, a sustained drop or image softness.
- Change exactly one setting. Start with Pixel Density for broad GPU load, MSAA if it is enabled, or SSR when rain and night are the trigger.
- Repeat the route under comparable weather, time and camera behavior. Record the visual difference as well as the frame-rate change.
- Keep a change only when its benefit matches your priority. A setting that raises an average number but worsens frame-time spikes or clarity is not an improvement for your use.
This method avoids treating an old benchmark as a universal promise. NVIDIA’s guide tested older GeForce 900- and 10-series hardware, including a GTX 1080, in described scenarios, while Steam’s optimization advice dates from January 2017. Neither source tests every current CPU, GPU, driver or game location.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with a lower desktop resolution: this often makes the whole interface and image softer when Pixel Density could have provided a more controlled performance adjustment.
- Leaving MSAA at 4x because it sounds moderate: the historical test found nearly 20 FPS of cost at that level.
- Dropping every setting at once: you will not know which change helped or which visual loss was unnecessary.
- Using Ultra textures without checking VRAM: texture quality is constrained by memory, not by the name of your GPU alone.
- Judging only a sunny daytime scene: rainy nights are the clearest documented SSR stress case.
- Expecting a fixed FPS gain: the cited figures are historical measurements, and scene, resolution and hardware all change the result.
Bottom line for the best Watch Dogs 2 PC settings
Keep the monitor at native resolution and Pixel Density at 1.0 until you need more performance. Disable MSAA, use post-process antialiasing with temporal filtering, and lower Pixel Density before lowering the display resolution. If low frame rates appear mainly during rainy nights, change SSR from Ultra to Very High. Match textures to the VRAM meter, keep anisotropic filtering high when its local cost is acceptable, and test every adjustment in the same scene. This produces a clearer, more stable setup without claiming that one preset can deliver the same FPS on every PC.
