Celestia’s evil counterpart in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is Daybreaker. Readers often mix her up with Nightmare Moon, who is the dark form associated with Celestia’s sister, Luna.
The short answer: Daybreaker
Daybreaker is the dark, fiery counterpart linked to Princess Celestia. She appears in the episode “A Royal Problem” as a potential evil alter-ego that is part of the episode’s conflict. She is not a permanent transformation of the main-series Celestia, and the episode should be read as presenting her as a vision or imagined counterpart rather than a second, fully realized identity for Celestia.
Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon are different characters
Most confusion comes from the symmetry between the two sisters. Each has a dark side, but the dark side belongs to a different princess:
| Name | Linked princess | Role in the series | Where it is documented |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daybreaker | Celestia | Dark, fiery counterpart presented as a potential evil alter-ego in “A Royal Problem” | Fan-maintained My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Wiki entry for Princess Celestia |
| Nightmare Moon | Luna | Wicked antagonist who threatens to plunge Equestria into eternal night, introduced in the opening episode | Hasbro’s parent guide to “Mare in the Moon” |
Where Nightmare Moon comes from
Hasbro’s official parent guide for the first episode, “Mare in the Moon,” describes a prophecy that says “wicked Nightmare Moon will plunge Equestria into eternal night.” The guide attributes this to the episode synopsis rather than to a named character. It also states that Princess Celestia sends Twilight Sparkle to Ponyville. The guide establishes the Luna and Nightmare Moon connection, but it does not discuss Daybreaker at all.

Where Daybreaker comes from, and how much to trust it
Daybreaker’s characterization as arrogant and power-hungry, and her description as a potential evil alter-ego, come from the fan-maintained My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Wiki. That reference is useful for orientation, but it is not an episode script or an official production synopsis, so the exact wording should not be presented as a studio statement. The same page attributes to Daybreaker the line calling herself “the better, prettier, and more powerful version” of Celestia; that quotation has not been checked against the episode itself, so verify it there before quoting it.
Optional: collecting Daybreaker
If you are looking for merchandise rather than canon, Mighty Jaxx has published a product feature for its XXRAY Plus Daybreaker figure that describes the character as Celestia’s evil alter-ego. That confirms the figure exists as a product, but it does not confirm current stock, price or retailer availability, so check the seller directly before buying.
